I don't see the point of Apple moving off Lightning for the iPhone. It's a cable. It charges the phone and if you connect it to your computer you can copy your music to the phone. I have not seen any article stating that an iPhone with a USB-C port would transfer 2x or 5x or 10x faster my music or somehow make my experience more magical. Yes, in the world outside Apple, in theory, and with the right equipment, USB-C *can* transfer a lot faster than USB 3.0...but you need the right cable, a fast enough drive on one end, a fast enough drive on the other end, and the computer hardware that actually supports USB 3.1x.

My gut says that 90% of the iPhone users out there use the cable only for charging...not transfering data. So what's the point in adopting a new cable (other than for adoption's sake)?
Also used it for CarPlay.

Wouldn't surprise me if Apple bought it from him.

That's what I was thinking. I was also thinking what kind of numbskull would pay that kind of money? I think this is fake and if someone did "purchase" probably will cancel the order and not pay. They want a moment of notoriety.

I wonder how much a wireless charging iPhone would sell for....

In all seriousness do we really need to change the port when the functionality is basically obsoleted with wireless charging and data transfer? This is seriously the most frivolous thing I've seen. Europe should push for wireless instead of producing waste.
Spoken like someone who’s never tried to move files off an iPhone, and likely just uses their phone to browse safari.

You know lightning is still on USB 2 speeds, yes?

Can't tell if joking...

You do realize the iPhone from, I believe 11 on, has wireless charging.

What files are you transferring? Seems like vast majority of people don’t have an issue. I don’t remember the last time I transferred something off my iPhone. I do it all wireless.

I don't get it. Why would anyone pay this money for this.

Because they can. See countless other purchases every day that make no logical, financial, ROI sense.

See thousand dollar fingernail jobs, hair cuts, dog grooming, etc.

How about a thousand dollar monitor stand? How about a $20 handkerchief? ;)

How about niche crypto (see Squid Game crypto)?

How about various SPACs and select NFTs?

Some art? Select collectibles (that may or may not retain value)?

How about RE that doesn't come with the under roof space or room count to fit seemingly insane prices?

Every day, there are stories of relative fortunes being spent on stuff that don't seem to fit the price. I simply view that as smooth sales presentations and/or "fools and their money"... but many of those "fools" have so much money, they don't even care if the value does not equal the price. It might be for status or attention, etc.

To the average Joe, it looks insane. To those who can burn hundreds instead of firewood, it's nothing. Maybe the buyer wants the Facebook likes of being the ONLY person on the planet with a USB-C iPhone and they value those likes at $86K? Those with money will spend fortunes to buy some fleeting, "look at me" attention. See a whole lot of the "fashion" industry creations.

We already have wireless charging in the iPhones. Yes, I agree that future phones should just be cordless.

MagSafe broke qi charging on all my old pads, even ones purchased from the apple store. It’ll charge, but after a short while the status lights on the pad start blinking and there’s no charge. Have to use MagSafe only. Which is a bummer.

That's a lot of money!

I like the idea of a universal port but the physical USB-C port/plug seems to be worse than lightning. On my old phone the USB-C port got so loose after 2 years that if I touched my phone while it was plugged in the cord would fall out.
I like lightning way more than USB C for this reason alone. It is more durable & tactile than UsbC

Why on earth would they do that? It’s not like he did something that Apple can’t figure out how to do - Apple almost certainly has a variety of iPhones with USB-C ports in their labs, since they have a reputation for prototyping everything. It would be a pointless way to throw away money.
