I think most people are joking about Apple buying it. To figure out how it's done. Given that the iPhone is still on Lightning and USB 2.0 when their other major lines have mostly transitioned to USB-C.

Personally, I don't care that much. All that bothers me is that Lightning is still stuck at USB 2.0. I really needs to be updated to USB 3.2 Gen 2 or USB 4.0. Because a 1TB transfer over 2.0 takes a long time.
Lightning is definitely USB 3.0 capable (see certain iPad Pro models that have Lightning). This is mostly just Apple not wanting to use a USB chipset in the iPhone that supports more than 2.0. Honestly, while I'd be surprised if they introduced a USB-C iPhone, I'd not be surprised if it was still USB 2.0 via USB-C.

Last week, an iPhone X modified with a USB-C port was listed on eBay as "the world's first USB-C iPhone," and now, a few days after intense bidding, the USB-C iPhone has been sold for $86,001.

The iPhone was modified by Ken Pillonel, a robotics student who shared a video explaining how he did it. Since the video was posted on November 1, it's garnered over 600,000 views and has been widely discussed across social media. The eBay listing, which lasted 10 days, had a total of 116 bids and 6 bid retractions. One bid earlier in the week topped $99,000.

From the iPad to the Mac, Apple utilizes USB-C ports for charging, data, and more. The company has relentlessly stuck to using its proprietary Lightning connector on the iPhone, and reports suggest that it won't be changing anytime soon.

The iPhone X is a 64GB model, and the winning bidder will be receiving the iPhone X in its original box but without any accessories. As a bonus, the winner will also get a 30-minute phone call with Pillonel should they have any questions about how the world's first USB-C iPhone was born.

USB… meh! The next phone likely won’t have a connecter because 5G’ll be here big time and we won’t need it. It’ll be faster than any cable.

Has anyone noticed how "mad" (crazy) the world is getting? People pay $69,000 for 1 Bitcoin. $86,000 for a modded iPhone X. It simply doesn't make sense, and yet people are doing it! "More money than brains" comes to mind, but if I could get that kinda money for modding something... I might actually give it a shot! :D

There are a lot of people who think the world around them is poor or something. I see it all the time, but the reality is even the poster next to yours is probably making bank from bitcoin or is more well off than you think. Apple has a nice chunk of this audience as well. So the sale of the iPhone doesn't surprise me in the least bit. There are diehard Apple collectors out there.

Unless someone has the money to waste, I assume they bought this solely to congratulate the guy for his work.

2022 Sept - Apple releases iPhone 14 Pro Super Maxi King with USB-C for $86,000

Poor Souls!

LOL!!!

This is so funny. What if Apple said, "HMMMMMMM, 86K eh??? Why didn't we think of this sooner!"

Then at the keynote:

"Introducing......................USB-C!!!!! And now, you can get it for 86 thousand (128GB model)"

Wireless chargers, although practical, still aren't super efficient which won't help with carbon reductions. Until they get better, then at least having a standard port like USB-C for all sorts of devices (phones and other devices) makes sense. But otherwise, that is I guess Apple's plan... move to wireless.
Wireless still feels like a gimmick to me as you've got a wire coming outta the wall and the pad's got a bigger footprint than you'd have if you just plugged in a cable. Add to this picture all the proprietary tech and... I think we're well off the dream of your phone charging when you're at home. Like... just seamlessly charging, wirelessly (and efficiently).

I think this wireless charging causes more issues than it solves. Always have. A hammer looking for a nail. Not a fan. Never will be.

My OnePlus 9 Pro does 50W on wireless.

What’s that old saying about a fool and his money? Anyway, all that money wasted on an old iPhone just to get a usb-c port will be even funnier if the 14 comes with usb-c.

Out of curiosity, what kind of issues? After having the micro-USB jack wear out on my android phone, and then having constant pocket lint problems preventing lightning charging from work on my iPhone, I charged both using the same $19 Anker wireless charger, which I've had for about 6 years now. It has always worked great.

I also prefer wireless charging over sticking someone else's random cable into my phone.
