wow the xr is the deal of the century. Plus apples prices will push down the second hand market. 🤪 it’s win win a good display, great battery life, and pretty good camera.

Glad I bought the SE.
I am too, but I have to admit I was curious if the rumored (now real) iPhone 12 Mini would make me interested or have buyers remorse or even make me want to trade in my new SE for it. That feels icky because I feel like I'd be "rooting against" the new iPhone, hoping that it wouldn't be that good, lol. But I think it's a really good phone at a pretty good price. I'm still glad I got the SE, though, because I prefer Touch ID. The extra $300 isn't nothing, either...in essence it bought me my first Apple Watch.

You bet. Even iPhone 12 mini starts 949CAD here in Canada. iPhone XR would be good for folks looking for “affordable iPhone” here in Canada.

iPhone is truly expensive here in Canada.
in europe too

Why do they keep discontinuing the prior years iPhone pro version? This is really weird and doesn’t make Apple customers happy to see their iPhone pro is now discontinued a yr later.

"Hi I'd like to purchase an iPhone"

"Sure, did you know which one of the 7 options you were after? Also, what color and storage did you like? Oh, and you'll need to buy a charger unless you own a new Mac."
Is this not the fragmentation that Steve Jobs removed when he returned to Apple? Reducing it to 4 simple products (iMac vs PowerMac... MacBook vs MacBook Pro)

With the launch of the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, Apple has decided to keep the iPhone SE, iPhone XR, and iPhone 11 around as lower-cost options.

iphonelineup.jpg

The only iPhones that are no longer available for purchase are the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, which have been eliminated in favor of the new iPhone 12 Pro models.

Apple's full lineup now features iPhones at every price point starting at $399.
  • iPhone SE - $399
  • iPhone XR - $499
  • iPhone 11 - $599
  • iPhone 12 mini - $699
  • iPhone 12 - $799
  • iPhone 12 Pro - $999
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max - $1099
The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 feature 64GB for starting models (upgradeable to 128GB or 256GB), while the iPhone 12 Pro models start at 128GB of storage, which can be upgraded to 256GB or 512GB of storage.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will be available for pre-order this Friday, with the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max to be available for pre-order on November 6.

So I read this. “LESS BEZEL MORE SCREEN” on Apples description of the iPhone 12. I assume the bezels are smaller now?!?!?!

It's just the iPod model from before. Start with very few models, keep the message simple. Then once everyone understands what an iPod is, slowly start to expand the line until you've got one at various price points. I know I have an idea of what I want to spend, but if I have to choose between, say, a $399 SE and a $499 XR which seem quite different from each other, I would drive myself crazy trying to figure it out. I don't know that that's how most buyers are, though.

Right. And it kind of is their philosophy too that it really isn't "old technology"; it is current. The latest simply becomes the last-latest instead of the truly old. It's looking at the version numbering that is throwing me off. Imagine Microsoft advertising Windows 7 and 8 right next to Windows 10.

The hardware release cycles on phones seem more like breadcrumbs to keep the idea fresh in a consumer's mind that a new phone each year isn't out of the question. Frankly, there are too many iPhone updates.

Yes. And I don't love it. But look at how short the release cycles are. They have to scale to insane global demand and then are left with all of this inventory surplus as well as a market who cannot afford (or won't spend) at the price of the latest generation. It's a good business move. Criticism comes from every end of this for them. If they don't democratize the iPhone then people blame them for being a phone for the rich. A lot of countries and consumers in the U.S. purchase their phones outright and don't have the luxury of carrier financing.

They've been doing it for years, nothing new here. The YoY changes are so incrimental that they can't keep the last years model available or it would cannibalize new model sales. I think the X was the first one they disco'd after one year. Same comment goes to the guy upstream who complained about it. They're still supporting your disco'd phone but they don't have an obligation to keep it available for sale to prop up the value of your instrument.

All that being said, I would imagine that they're beating up their own used market so much and angering long time customers enough that it *might* bite them back sooner or later......nah, who are we kidding. They'll keep killing it every year.

I totally agree. You have to blame current exchange rates, though. If you take current rates, here’s what Canada prices should be (and that excludes taxes *sigh*):

ModelApple US $Apple Canada $Canada $ Corrected (as of Oct. 13th)
iPhone SE399$599$523$
iPhone XR499$699$655$
iPhone 11599$849$786$
iPhone 12699$979$917$
iPhone 12 Pro999$1,399$1,310$

How does it matter if they keep continuing to support the phone with warranty and software updates?

I think it's bollocks that only the Pro Max is getting those camera spec bumps. Guess I'll keep my 11 Pro.

Says the guy who bought an 11 Pro for the camera? It's NEVER worth the upgrade to next year's model unless you have a REAL reason to or money to burn. So why complain about the obvious?

Like ordering the second cheapest bottle of wine at a restaurant, it seems like the XR is the most bang for your buck ;)

laziness and not wanting to cannibalize the next level iphone 11. The 11's the better deal

It’s not really though is it. The 11 is probably the worst deal out of the XR, the 11 and the 12. The differences between the 11 and 12 is much greater than the differences between the XR and the 11

Yes. I use the Apple upgrade program, so it makes sense to upgrade yearly as nothing really changes. Doesn't pay to have a phone paid off in two years and is worth dick to try to sell or trade-in.

While Apple’s price is cheaper in China and India (I know for sure you can get iPhone for less in China, even with exchange rate plays in).

For average consumer, iPhone 12 series is expensive. Really really expensive. I can’t find any justification (at least for me to shell out almost 1500 dollars, that not including tax) for a phone.

Guilty me, I did end up with iPhone 11 with iPhone 8 Plus trade in (that bring down price somewhat).

Heck I am typing this with iPhone 7 Plus 128GB Jet Black for $299. It does everything I do.

I believe vast majority of people will get iPhone XR, iPhone SE simply because it is cheaper. Heck, when I renewed my contract, I opted for iPhone 7, simply because I get keep my sweet plan and I don’t pay a single cent more.

I couldn’t agree more! I used to be one of those bleeding edge guys who always upgraded to the latest and greatest but there’s less and less to upgrade for these days. I’ve had my XR for 2 years now, that’s the longest I’ve kept a phone for and fully expected to upgrade this year but it’s a solid ‘meh’ for the iPhone 12 range, so I’m going to keep my XR another year.

I did worry about my AppleCare+ expiring but it seems Apple now lets you renew it once it expires on a rolling monthly basis, so win-win!
