I’m starting to get 90s Mac lineup vibes here

View attachment 965906
Yes, that is an EXCELLENT observation. When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, his very first action was to dump the highly confusing multiple Macs Line and SIMPLIFY things to just four models........two for the Home User and two for the Pro User. With the plethora of different Macs, iMacs, iPhones, etc., etc., there are now a multiple of various options and considerations that the customer (BUYER) must trudge through to get what he/she is shopping for. That same overdone Apple Products Lineup is what damn near killed Apple in 1997. Than goodness that Steve Jobs was a firm believer in SIMPLICITY. There really are far too many versions of every Apple Product, with each representing just a minor upgrade over the other. Not everyone wants to wade through the seas multiple models and then through the various upgrade options available. That truly is ridiculous at best. I for one miss Steve Jobs if for nothing else, his philosophy of simplifications. The current Apple Execs are playing a game of overkill which could quite possibly turn potential buyers away.

Older Macs don't have USB-C ports.
Then the BUYERS are going to need to invest additional money for an Adapter, USB-A to USB-C. Oh I guess that is OK though, Apple will be more than happy to accommodate that sale. In the REAL world that tactic is very well known as "Price Creep". Yes, technology is always in a state of advancing, but couldn't Apple offer a discounted adapter for those with older Macs? I realize that may shave about $10 off their already high profit margin. But it would make it much easier for the BUYER to continue with his/her older Mac and still have the correct connectivity to the newer iPhone Lineup. Maybe customer relations are not a part of Tim Cook's Emoji Inundated World, but they used to be a BIG part of Steve Jobs' Apple World.

Damn, the decisions don't get easier. But it's a bit deceptive to i) have the actual price (without discount) to be $30 higher than stated, as others have said, and ii) it's only the mini that starts at $699, so the cheapest regular-size OLED handset in the lineup is $830 (not $799) + tax. Yikes. Even the Pixel 4a has OLED and 5g, and it's far cheaper.

You bet. Even iPhone 12 mini starts 949CAD here in Canada. iPhone XR would be good for folks looking for “affordable iPhone” here in Canada.

iPhone is truly expensive here in Canada.
As a fellow Canadian, couldn't agree more.

iPhone 11 still seems like a great deal.
It is. For most mainstream users, this is the iPhone I would recommend. You get a modern-looking iPhone with a great camera, 6.1" True Tone display, great battery life, U1, 4GB RAM for $599. Going to the iPhone 12 for $799 only gets you a new design, 5G, Super Retina XDR Display which are meaningless to the average consumer.

For hardcore users, the 12 Pro series is a great value since base prices have remained the same as the 11 Pro series so you're getting quite a bit more for your money at the high-end of the segment.

Gotta decide if the stainless steel frame and improved additional camera lens + LiDAR are worth $150 to you...

Wait, so I missed nothing? Are they really 99% the same phone, with just a different element for the band running around the device and LIDAR for $150 more?

I'm surprised that there's no bump in RAM, CPU, GPU, etc... they've really made the word "Pro" totally meaningless.

As is tradition.

not really.

This is just handing by off garbage to the end user:

iPhone XR & 11 are essentially the same phone! Xr 2 yrs old and yet now scrubbing the accessories and headsets and still too close to its launch price. The 11 is more of an insult especially now that the iPhoneSE 2nd edition exists.

garbage. Gut the Xr from sales - keep the parts bin for warranty replacements. Drop the 11 base mode price and keep the EarPods.

Uh yeah, do you go to a car dealership and just tell them you want to buy a car without knowing what kind of car you want?
Yes. 1 car please! Post haste good man!

It’s like in tv shows when someone steps up to a bar and they say 1 beer please and the bartender just gives them one.

Interestingly, if you don't mind the LCD display, the iPhone 11 is now a heck of a deal, since the 256 GB version is still being sold. Especially given the known LONG battery life per charge on the iPhone 11. And it has the U1 ultra-wideband chip for support of the HomePod mini and eventually the AirTags.

"Hi I'd like to purchase an iPhone"

"Sure, did you know which one of the 7 options you were after? Also, what color and storage did you like? Oh, and you'll need to buy a charger unless you own a new Mac."

/s
Steve would have been proud of this LEGENDARY retail experience (like how Apple was back in the 1990s)

I know there is some bemoaning of the SKU simplicity in Jobs' era, but that was akin to "you can buy any color car you want as long as the color is black." Good job to Apple for covering a broad range of prices/technology with the 2020 lineup.

Who wants to pay $500 for a 3 year tech phone?! and $600 for last year's model? Surely you can't be that stingy to pay an extra $100 for this year's model. My bet is they have a lot of old stock they need to get rid of.

Should have been SE and iphone 12 only, last year model should be highly discounted or build less of them.

They could have, and it would have been nice, but...an adaptor is $11 at Microcenter. Is that really a problem? Technology changes. USB-A was around when I was in high school 23 years ago.

Also, many (perhaps half or more) buyers don't need the adaptor as they have USB-C chargers or a computer with ports. So its inclusion would require a higher price point without value to many buyers.

Maybe Apple still have previous XR and 11 leftover stock, I think Apple need to get rid XR and 11, just leave SE and 12 line up for avoiding confusion.

Why do they keep discontinuing the prior years iPhone pro version? This is really weird and doesn’t make Apple customers happy to see their iPhone pro is now discontinued a yr later.
Same reason they only offer the Watch in SS for the new version.

If you want ‘the best’, pay up.

My wife's iPhone 8 died for reasons unknown. Took it to the GB, Genius hooked it up to their diagnostic tool, ran it three times and all three times it said there was an internal problem with powering up the device. Since Apple does not repair iPhone 8s - only replace them - we went with the 11 pro. Price was $899 which is hundred dollars less than retail which was nice since they gave us nothing for her iPhone 8 because they couldn't link the failure to any previous recall and it was a year out of Apple Care.

Pretty happy to see the Xr retain its place in the lineup. Since they're still selling them they will presumably receive several more years of software updates.
Same here. I’m happy to know we will be supported for a while. I used to love getting a new phone. Now I’d rather keep this XR as long as possible. Phones are too expensive.

I may be the minority but I miss the days of 2-year contracts but then only having to spend $200 on the phone. I’ve been with Verizon for 15 years and don’t plan on switching so I don’t mind contracts.

My ideal iPhone would be an iPhone 12 with no notch, no Face ID, go back to circular buttons for the volume instead of the rectangles and include a headphone jack.

Burger King 🍔 just changed their logo back to their 80’s/90’s logo. It’s okay to go back to what worked.
