Just another way to force people to buy Apple Care. Just raise the repair prices. Pure profit. The price should be screen price + labor costs + a small profit. This is just Apple being greedy again. Of course Apple is no charity, but as long you don't have a share in the Apple stock, there's no reason be happy for this, cook won't give you a tap on you shoulder for being a sheep. Besides this all, Apple claims to be so environment friendly, with a special mention on the XR specifications page. How is letting people throw away their devices, because repair is too expensive, environment friendly?

You can buy AppleCare and pay monthly? Separate from a device payment plan?

Apple is a huge finance company now. It really boosts sales if you can let people finance their purchases.

People are clumsy. For those that refuse to use a sturdy case and break your phones, apple thanks you.

Apple also thanks you for buying AppleCare. They certainly aren’t losing money selling it.

What other product does a company sell that requires being wrapped in a protective device to protect from normal use? Normally we’d consider a product defective that wasn’t made to withstand normal use.

UK pricing:
Screen damage with Applecare+: £174
Without Applecare+: 196.44

Other damage with Applecare+: £228
Without Applecare+: £396.44

If Apple really cared about the environment (as they repeatedly claim to), they would make spare parts available at fair market prices so that 3rd parties or individuals can perform repairs themselves, especially as devices age out of warranty.

Too bad Apple doesn't respect you, the laws or the environment.

I doubt it... As other companies are the same Dell for instance... It's always more expensive out of warranty repairs. Apple do what they do. moving to non-repairable. and PC's laptops are not that far behind either...

Time for Apple to make some durable devices.
According to the other article on MR people don’t upgrade as often as they used to. Especially not annually. This is how Apple makes some extra money now.

I am probably not going to keep this phone more than a year. I really want to have two lenses. I only went to this from a Max for health reasons. I’m hoping either Apple fixes the issue that makes some people get migraines on the OLED next year or they give a zoom lens to the Xr. However I don’t know that is going to happen. If it doesn’t happen I may want to keep the Xr more than one year. Then I will want extended warranty coverage. At this very moment I don’t know what I will decide.

I’m glad Apple allows customers a very generous amount of time to decide on the extra coverage. Samsung only offers it at the time of purchase. You can’t even add it during the preorder time before the phone actually ships.

I am not careless but I am often surrounded by children and pets. My dog is completely bonkers. I’ve been training dogs to do complex tasks since I was a small child. This is the first dog in my life I’ve ever met that can’t be trained to even “shake hands”. She knows commands and understands them. She just doesn’t see why she should comply. Neither for positive or negative reinforcement. I think she’s part honey badger. Most of my close calls have involved her. But the funny thing is for my actual drops, she was nowhere around. I guess I had better strongly consider coverage. :p

We're just not used to Apple's eco-system. If we didn't have a problem,we would acept why Apple do what they do.
Of course out of warranty repairs should cost money. But a screen repair is always out of warranty. (Unless you pay for AppleCare+, which is exactly they want you to force by asking ridiculous repair prices). This is just 53% of the total Apple Store Price. So if you got an offer by your carrier, its even more expensive. This means that if you buy a new iPhone XR, 53% of the price is for the back glass...

I don't consider dropping your 1000 dollar phone on concrete "normal use"

It's to prevent accidents, not "normal use". I've had the same phone for 3+ years now and still looks like new. Applecare has zero interest to me. They can nickle and dime someone else.

Does an item damage itself?

Everyone should be buying AppleCare+ anyway. It’s a no brainer.

Saving $21 on a screen replacement is a no brainer? I’d rather self insure and risk the $21 in savings. I haven’t broken an iPhone screen since the 3G, saved a lot of money over the years not getting AppleCare for the phone or iPad. Macs however I like to buy it for.

You'd think that now they are using flexible OLED screens that they'd make the whole device flexible including the frame, glass, backing, logic board and battery. Nope, now even more fragile than ever. The iPhone SE was nice and solid so they killed it off.

This is absurd... yeah why would we have to handle these devices with any care at all? I remember their strategy roadmap that said they were killing the SE and going with all-screen phones so that they could make more money from repairs - it's definitely better business to make more fragile devices so people have to pay high repair fees, customers would TOTALLY put up with that long term. Given all the iPhones I've had, can't say this X is any more or less fragile than the original or the 3G or 3GS or 5S or 6+ or 6s+... I've definitely broken screens on the others, but not this one yet so it must be less fragile - or maybe there's only so much that can be done given the materials used.

I've had mobile phones for over 10 years and haven't damaged any of them. I only buy insurance when the cost to replace items would exceed what I could afford. I could probably buy a couple of new iphones with the amount I've saved over the years from not buying insurance.
There's a reason why insurance policies are often companies most profitable products.

Basically, buy a new phone.

No basically buy Apple Care for each phone and pay additional when you actually need to replace anything!

Or, just go and buy a new Pocophone and save $100 then use the damaged Mobile as a paperweight!

I was responding to these statements... he's not denying people don't break their phones, but saying you can't accidentally damage something.
Ah, yea that’s a pretty flippant attitude but regardless of his tone it’s still dumb not to get insurance in a device you keep in your pocket most of the time that’s made of glass.

An accident is always someone's fault. If you drop your phone then it's your fault. It didn't leap out of your hand on a suicide mission did it...

No one wants to take responsibility for anything any more.

Yes that is correct, calling something an accident doesn't negate fault or responsibility. It really just means it wasn't done on purpose. It doesn't matter how cautious of a person you are, accidents still happen.

No one can ever accidentally damage anything. Carelessness is always someone's fault.
Nonsense. I had an iPad leaning against my wall, on the ground, with an Apple case on it. It tipped over and the glass cracked right down the middle. I accidentally damaged it, but it wasn't from carelessness. The case never came in contact with the floor as it's impossible with a case one it. The glass had a weak spot. I accidentally damaged it, but the damage was a result of an item defect, not carelessness.
