My maxed-out Max arrives tomorrow, but I now have no plans to even open the box. I have 2-weeks to return it, and if I verify the antenna issue to be valid, Tim Cook can stick it up his... My 7+ works just fine, but my GF needs a new phone so I figured this would be a viable plan.

I’m in Phoenix. My Xs Max is faster both at home and work than the 7+ it replaced. I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t just try it yourself, instead of taking the word of internet strangers. It doesn’t affect your return at all.

Signal bars mean nothing though. Does the diagnostic mode work on the intel modems? We need numbers.

Qualcomm & Apple are in an ugly legal fight right now. Seems that Apple is complaining that Qualcomm is charging too much in royalties to use their modems and Qualcomm is complaining that Apple is trying to get out of contractually paying them what was agreed on by both parties initially in the relationship.

So, Apple being Apple, decided not only to counter sue Qualcomm for "price gouging" (irony ..be damned) with their modems, they then decided to try and teach Qualcomm a lesson with their overwhelming economic clout and partner up with Intel to replace Qualcomm's modems with Intel's - which are clearly inferior. Like the MR story on Apple's markup's on flash storage, it would appear that Apple doesn't cotton to being subjected to any form of "price gouging" when it comes to their "premium" iPhone's supply chain.

Apple Inc. basic trillion dollar business model is a simple case of "buying iPhone parts at the lowest to rock bottom prices, and then gladly reselling the finished product for as sky high as their market will bear - as their eye popping profit margins easily testify.

Cutting corners and fanatical bean counting is why we have a 4-year old Mac Mini & Mac Pro still being sold at their original MSRP..
Qualcomm is double dipping and has been for ages because they have a defacto monopoly. They should be investigated by the justice department anti trust division.

I'm having a bit of a different issue with WiFi on my XS...My wifi won't appear on the Wifi list. I've tried disabling anything and everything, reset my router, reset my iphone XS. The wifi is working and all my other apple devices are seeing it, in fact I'm able to share my wifi through my macbook, but for some annoying reason I cannot even see my wifi as an option. Other wifi networks are working and my phone connects to those I have the password to, but not my home wifi. Anyone else having this issue? Could it have something to do with getting on Southwest Airlines in-flight wifi?

Yep, that's why not just Apple, but Samsung also want to get away from Qualcomm. However, Qualcomm has been perfecting their modem for decades so there is no denying at this point they are still superior.

Well, they apparently don't have a true "monopoly" since Apple was able to partner with Intel as an modem alternative.
Both Qualcomm & Apple apparently have no problems with useing and abusing their current market 'economics of scale'.

I reset network seatings and that helped with. WiFi
I am also noticing problems with my Max and 5g in the house, phone only 2 days old. I just reset the network settings and praying that will do the trick. Verdict still out on this one! Ok

Ahh, another lazy / bad quality Apple engineering issue will deny for 1-1/2 years or blame on their customers until they get sued for it.

Have you considered, you might be "holding it wrong"? HAHHAHA :D:D:D:D

And it's only going to get worst as the world market races for 5G. Qualcomm seems to be maintaining (and perhaps expanding) their lead over INTEL.

Me too. Better and faster LTE at the office than my 7 Plus had.
What is your provider? It may depend on your previous modem. AT&T and T-mobile had the Intel modem which does not perform as well as the Qualcomm modem. Verizon and Sprint prior to this year had Qualcomm.

Seeing how Apple is slow to jump on the latest cellular tech, we do not have to worry about 5G and iPhone for another 5 years.

From a T-Mobile 7+ to T-Mobile XS Max so, yes, Intel to Intel. However I’m not experiencing any of the issues described in this thread. Fast, stable 5G WiFi over a 2000 sq/ft home and improved cellular performance in the places I tested it.

On WiFi at my house (with Airport Extreme) my Xs gets 84.7 Mbps and iPad Pro 9.7 inch gets 355 Mbps. The Verizon LTE on my Xs was 41.9 Mbps (two bars, which is what I had with my 6s, but I never checked the speeds).

Is it normal that my iPad WiFi is so much better than my iPhone? Also, aren't the WiFi chips from someone other than Apple?

I haven’t had any issues yet but I haven’t gone anywhere other than my house since I opened mine today. Hopefully I don’t get any connectivity issues or I’m going to be pissed cause Tmobile charges like $70 to return.

Interesting... that would definitely explain some of these wildly differing reports.

That drastic of a difference seems like it shifted you to the 2.4Ghz band while the iPad is on the 5. What is your WiFi setup like?

I think you and many others including myself have not seen the same issues. Many have surmised that this is likely a software problem, others think its hardware because of the FCC report. The thing is no one knows for sure, just like no one knows how many potentially have the issue.

I am not for one minute going to deny that there are some that are having issues as there is no reason for folks to come in a forum and make that up, just like there is no reason for those of us that aren't having the issue to come in and say we aren't if we really are.

I say if you are having the issue by all means contact Apple... If you aren't then enjoy your device, you happen to get a good one. No is shouldn't be hit or miss with these devices, but it's not the first time we've seen stuff like this on a new release phone. Apple will have a choice to make, which is to figure out what the heck is going and fix it if possible. If not it maybe necessary even do a recall on those that keep them beyond the 14 day return window. I suspect if something doesn't give between now and the 14 day return window many will opt to do that and just wait to see what happens. If I were having the issue that is what I would likely do. However, there is no way in hell I am going to Android, that is just not an option.

Just for the record, I've not had the reception issue, I've not seen no service, switching between LTE and 4G or 3G. My Wifi logs in the minute I walk into my home or office and connects to the 5Ghz connection even though we run 2.4Ghz as well because we have equipment that can only connect to that. I wish that was the case for everyone.
