Again, i rather do most of what you wrote..............on an iPad! Why bother carrying around extra stuff for DEX....when you can just carry your phone + iPad?!
The iPad can’t use a mouse. That’s enough reason to use Dex. All you need is a cable now. You don’t even need a mouse or a keyboard. You can use the phones screen as a trackpad. Imagine you are in a hotel room. It’s such a simple and powerful set up. Just connect your phone to the TV and you’re ready to go. Take a little fold up keyboard and you can be so productive.

I have 2 iPads and a MacBook but my phone is still my primary computer because I have it with me at all times. It’s the most convenient. I do 95% of my computing on my phone.

TV + fold up keyboard + cable......vs. iPad. Hmmmm. Come on! LOL

I don’t think that you have thought what you wrote thru. Ipad can’t use mouse....but you want to use Note 9 as trackpad. But then you need a keyboard. And cable. And TV.

Ok...how about if you’re on a bus? What do you do?

Dude, ipad + phone. Much more flexible and much more productive.

DEX = gimmick.

That is my combo but I won’t sit here and say that it’s more productive. My computing needs are limited. You can probably tell because I do most of my computing on my iPhone despite owning iPads and a Mac but if I needed to be more productive the iPhone would be limiting for me.

On a bus I’m using my iPhone. Not even going to take out my iPad mini on the bus let alone my iPad Pro.

The point is android gives you options. Apple takes them away.

Sure, Android has more options. But how many of those options are not gimmick? Yeah, you should get Note 10/11 and DEX on next round. I guarantee you that you will regret it.

There is no circumstance where DEX beats an iPad. None. You still have to carry extra stuff with you for DEX to work...heck even need a TV! That same space can fit an iPad. DEX is far more limited than an iPad.

Dex beats an iPad if you can only afford one device. Obviously I have multiple devices but I think it’s good if people in other countries can only buy one device. If you can only afford one device a Note 9 is a better buy than an iPhone. Some people use their mobile phone as their only device not simply their preferred device.

Plus, DeX works w/ an HDMI to USB Type C function w/o the station. Meanwhile, the Note 9 and iPhone XS being so similarly priced in the US, it may cause tunnel vision because people may not necessarily consider sticker shock in other countries.

Aren't the price differences between the Note 9 and XS Max stark in the UK? It makes the Galaxy a more attractive buy due to more features.

iOS lost a lot of luster because the UI is too similar to iOS 7, offers a cluttered app experience (even with folders there, still cluttered a bit), Apple has made poor choices w/ its volume up and down icon taking up the screen, and the software doesn't maximize its processing power enough.

Plus, Apple will continue to provide either redundant experiences or overpriced products that are lacking in major areas. A $500 Surface Go is a better productivity buy (w/ keyboard) than a $500 iPad Air because of a mouse experience and x86 programming.

Look at the 2018 iPad Pro? Bending, no point and click, and a hefty price tag.

Apple's motto is pay more, do less.

Well, if your finances are so tight that you can only have ONE device, then Note 9 is probably NOT on your shopping list.....

Interesting........as Android Q is more and more looking like iOS.

LOL. Now we're onto iPad...LOL. Give it a rest dude. Feel free to complain about those things in the iPad forum.
[doublepost=1553008017][/doublepost]Here is what PCWorld has to say about DEX:

"It’s probably telling that Samsung barely paid any lip service to the DeX during their recent Developers Conference.

When it was introduced in 2017, the DeX was a curiosity bristling with potential. Nowadays, it seems like a dead-end. Samsung are pouring more and more research and development dollars into Bixby, 5G and foldable displays. DeX seems to have fallen by the wayside.

DeX is probably not the future of computing - it’s a neat capability for Samsung's devices to have but simply too niche and inconsistent for everyone else to meaningfully rely on. Samsung’s slimming down of the hardware involved - though technically impressive - has done little to change that. As launch, the Dex was a compromise for everyone involved - and that hasn't really changed over the last twelve months.

If you’re the rare kind of user who can get away with doing their workflow using the DeX, I’m actually more impressed with you than I am Samsung.

All the same, the software and hardware caveats involved mean that it’s probably going to remain a niche feature until it quietly fades into the backdrop.

But trying to bend Android’s mobile-first ecosystem out of shape to suit a small segment of desktop-minded users isn’t just an efficient and sustainable way forward - it’s futile for everyone involved.

Either way, the DeX itself seems doomed. The introduction of DeX Labs bought it some time but it’s doomed all the same. Samsung’s move to offer Linux support suggests they're keen to move onto whatever comes next than continue to extend the life of an experiment that's already reached a terminal phase.

When it comes to technology and computing, everyone is fighting to define the future - and Samsung have failed that fight with the DeX."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Damning, isn't it? DEX is a gimmick. And even Samsung is seemingly moving away from it.

Yes the note starts at £879 in the U.K., but you can get it for less now. The max starts at £1099. So it’s over £200 cheaper even at full retail price. It’s the same with the S10 plus. £200 cheaper runs the XS max.

Just wait one month, all Samsung drops in price...and so does its resale value.

i can get an IPhone XS Max 256GB for £760 or a Note 9 for £420.

Without any bias, which would you go for?

Thanks.

Which OS do you prefer?
How often do you upgrade your phone?
Which features are most important to you?
Are they new phones or 2nd hand phones?

That's good because these phone prices are getting out of hand. Outside of FaceID, I don't feel that my XS Max does enough to differentiate itself to be worth a $1100 price tag on the market. At least Samsung overhauled its software and is making strides w/ hardware to continue being the best Android has to offer.

Plus, the Galaxy Buds help eat out of the S10+ price tag. I am actually looking forward to trying them out soon enough.

I think the only advantage of the iPhone is if you are all in on the Apple ecosystem. Otherwise there are better choices in terms of hardware and features.

I was once all in with Apple's ecosystem. People talked about things they did with their products that I didn't know or cared about. I felt the only things I used regularly were continuity hand offs and iMessage from my MBP. I decided to sell my iPad last November when I saw some deals on the Surface Go.

For me, the Go has been quite well since I can get full fledged windows, watch my NHL out of market games, take it portably, and will be working on Python and Tableau soon.

I like the Apple Watch, but it has no use once my iPhone gets sold off.

Better features? Sure, depending on what someone considers ‘better’. As far as hardware is concerned? The iPhone _has_ always set the standard in terms of delivering in that Area. Yes, competitors have improveD significantly with their hardware standards over the years, but in terms of aesthetics and overall build quality, the iPhone still is one of the top and set the precedent for other phones to become better.

Better hardware in terms of additional cameras, higher resolution displays. Of course the iPhone was the leader in build quality for years but now android devices have caught up.

Is resolution the main criteria for displays?

More cameras mean better hardware?

A wide angle camera is important and relevant. Why else would Apple be implementing the same thing in the next iPhone?

The new P30 is going to have 10 x optical zoom. These are not trivial things.

Samsung displays not only match the quality of Apple’s but they offer higher resolution and now support for HDR10+. Again not a trivial thing.

Until the iPhone X the iPhone was woefully behind in terms of display.

Wide angle? Let's hold our horses a bit......we're not sure what the 3rd hole of iPhone 11 is.....could be wide angle......or could be ToF sensor.

Wide angle lens is good and all........but until someone manages the horrible distortion associated with super wide, it remains a gimmick.

If Apple use it, then I expect Apple to manage distortion better than everyone else. My guess is that it is ToF.

10X optical zoom...that is nice.......but remember, Huawei does many things good, but also compromises badly on others, such as OIS (lack of) and horrible EIS. So, the fact that iPhone XS has OIS in both lenses is not being accounted for in your view of "hardware superiority"? See where you fall short in your argument?

Yet, as posted elsewhere by me, iPhone X/XS is the best display on the mobile planet, as deemed by XDA (Android website, respected at that!). HDR10+....OK.....how much support? Is it relevant for normal media? Sony could do HDR video recording...but how relevant is that when you cannot display it on anything other than your own phone?

Notice how that in all your points, you use a different Android phone. No one Android phone has all the things.

Contrast that to the iPhone XS...best damn display + best damn processor + best damn build quality and materials + best damn camera system (pics & video) + best damn resale value.....all in ONE device.

Display mate have more authority than XDA developers when assessing screen quality and the current best display is the S10 plus. I don’t doubt that the next iPhone will take that title when it’s released. However the fact still stands that befor the X the iPhone was really behind in terms of display.

The best processor is the only thing that is undisputed. The A12 is the better processor even if Apple are not using the power.

Best display: The pixel 3 XL and the S10 plus have surpassed the Xs Max now.

Best build quality: Very subjective. Samsung phones have good build quality too

Best Camera: The pixel 3 is widely regarded to have the best camera. The point you make about OIS on both lenses is not unique to the iPhone. Samsung’s dual lenses both have OIS and had it on the telephoto lens before the iPhone.

Best resale value: Yes the iPhone has the best resale value.

The wide angle on the S10 plus is not distorted. That’s been commented on in the reviews. Unlike its use on LG phones.

DisplayMate reviews are always glowing and is now being made fun of even on Samsung forums....where are we at now? A++++++? LOL

Frankly, i trust Anandtech and XDA.

I don’t know about S10...waiting for Anandtech and XDA to review it.

But Pixel 3? Nah...read this extensive review: https://www.xda-developers.com/goog...gible-improvement-yet-still-behind-the-curve/

Pixel 3 is not even close.

Add in iPhone native wide color support and OS wide color management...and iPhone remains class leader (pending S10 review).

"We would give the Galaxy Note 9 an A rating: Very good brightness with high brightness mode, great gamma control, photos app has some color management. But, it still has black clipping, and we found the color accuracy in the calibrated profiles to not be too impressive. The iPhone X and the iPhone Xs both receive A+ ratings: It has a stellar manual brightness range without utilizing high brightness mode, zero black clipping over its 8-bit intensity range, smart PWM control, the best color accuracy we have measured, good gamma control, and excellent color management with an OS that utilizes wide color. These very noticeable and experience-affecting differences allow it to pull ahead of the Note 9 based on the qualities of the display and how its software handles it...."

Pixel 3 and XS trades punches according to camera reviews. Some prefer XS ultra-wide dynamic range....other prefer the high contrast pics of P3. But, when you add in VIDEO CAPABILITY, the XS is far more flexible camera system than Pixel 3.

You missed my point (again). You talk about Huawei 10x zoom, but you did not realize that it has no OIS on any of its lenses. You talk about Pixel 3 camera, but you did not realize that it has probably one of the worst video capability for a flagship.

Samsung camera do have OIS (but not on super wide angle i think)...true...but it has compromises elsewhere...inferior processor, inferior biometrics, inferior support aftersales, inferior (actually horrendous) resale value, etc..

The wide angle of S10 does have a lot of distortion esp at the edges in any of pics...and is just bad in anything less than sunlight. Bad lens quality and super tiny sensor. So, yeah, i guess if you’re outside in sunlight and want to get a wider picture, then it might be useful...but then you have to post-edit it to correct the distortion and then apply HDR post to correct for blown out highlights.

Again, for you to make the point of Android superior hardware, you cannot name me ONE Android device that has all of them.

Yet, the device that you are using.......has all of it. But oh no, you look on the other side of the fence thinking how green it is over there. Heck, you even think DEX is the greatest thing since slice bread......even though it is now being thrown in the trash by Samsung.... :D

The hardware on Samsung phones is better than my Xs max. I have the Xs max because it’s a better option looking at the bigger picture. It’s not only about a phone in isolation. I have iPads, a MacBook, Apple TVs, a HomePod, an Apple Watch and airpods. None of those would work as well with a Samsung phone.

XDA are developers. They know about software. I’m not interested in what they have to say about a display.

Anandtech whilst very technical, are very biased towards Apple. Their founder works for Apple.

Phones are always going to be a personal choice. There’s no way to avoid bias in this discussion.

Own both.. prefer the Max. But Note 9 is awesome too. At this point it's a question of preference.

No rational person actually thinks the XS has a better camera than the Pixel 3. The latter blows everything away. This is reinforced by almost every tech reviewer. Didn't the verge rate the pixel 2 camera above the XS?
