That Notch reminds me a lot of the second screen on my LG V10. I even found it interesting how on the V40 in the settings menu, it was labeled "New Second Screen".

Finally, one trend I really miss that was on my LG V10 (which was technically the precursor to a notched design), is having that second screen interactable. Like if you get a phone call, the pickup call or ignore would show up on the 2nd screen so you don't have to leave what you were doing. Also when the phone was off, you could toggle the flashlight.

I'm not sure if the second screen is interactable on the V40 like it is on my V10 however, I know for a fact that the iPhone X style notch is not interactable on these new iPhones.

I'm with you when it comes to the notch. People forget that space was pretty much wasted on the screen anyway before the notch appeared.

I believe a certain number of people formed an opinion about the notch that was rooted in their dislike of Apple, and they won't budge from it. I get really tired of people whining about the notch especially given all of the Android phones sporting notches.
i was worried about how it would affect looking at my phone, but after two weeks with my XS Max (previous 7 Plus). It doesn’t bother me. The screen is so massive that I forget it’s there. Apple does it right by eliminating the chin so the phone looks so good compared to the 7 with the chunky bezels.

I have never owned an Android. As you can see from my user name, I've been on these forums since 2001.

Lol gotta love this place should watch Painfully Honest Techs latest video on toxicity.

Anyway just for info not that ya care because you have your point of view, but my Samsung does not lag (in fact my 8 and 7 didnt either but the earlier ones i agree where crap), yes it has some apps i dont use but i use package disabler pro so its as if they are not there (and takes up very little of my base 128gb storage), no startup at boot no visibility, but a lot less than previously and as for updates, im on my 2nd update since launch and the 3rd is about to drop which will be October Security update. Last update was to fix an HDR camera issue which had been highlighted by xda about 2 weeks previous so thats pretty responsive in my books and not the soundbites people like to throw around (hows the wifi lte fix coming along? Been a few weeks and no response /s)

It's silly to think that any single operating system has a monopoly on being "better" at all things. This LG V40 is a pretty impressive little gadget in its own right. LG makes quality products, so I'm sure they'll sell plenty to their target niche. (Relative to the size of that niche, of course.) I actually rather like the smaller notch which allows display of, among other things, the battery percentage—something that's bugged me more than it should! And I really do imagine you'll see a triple camera (or something comparable that might be a bit more space efficient) coming to an iPhone near you soon. The rationale is quite sound. Unnecessary? Sure. But we passed the threshold of "necessary" as a feature prerequisite on phones and devices a long time ago. :p

With the state of Android updates not being pushed to many types of phones a year or more old I will not purchase a Android phone. iOS 12 adaption already passed the latest Android update and previous Android update. Not because users do not want the latest Android OS and updates, it is because carriers and manufactures are not supplying them. Their attitude is “you want the updates purchase a new phone”.

At present I am running a four year old iPhone 6S Plus, iOS 12 runs on it. What four year old Android phone gets the latest update? For as long as as my iPhone can take updates or until it quits working I will continue using it not purchasing another phone. My phone is used throughout the day it does not sit unused for long.
It depends on the phone. A flagship android phone like this LG one or a Samsung flagship will get updates for 2 years and a google pixel for 3 years. However neither are as good as an iPhone for updates.

Painfully honest tech is stupid. He bounces back from liking Apple to android OEMS. Whatever crap he spews to get the clicks and views. Same as unbox therapy.

Okay, so ignore my comments that countered your assertion about updates and instead make a slur against a you tuber because he dares to have an opinion both for and against both apple and android. (he recently switched from the note 9 to max xs as it suited him better) And yes he dabbles in clickbait, but then again thats what macrumours is built on, but your still here so cant be that bad eh

I’ve owned a few android devices. Galaxy S5 and a note 4. In my experience, they were great phones at first, but after time goes along they lagged and slowed down. I stopped getting updates on both after a year. I’m sure that they’ve gotten better, but please only 2 maybe 3 years of updates?? That’s just sad. The big money spent on these devices they should be longer. My old iPhone 6 is running on iOS 12 with a new battery. Apple might be more expensive on the higher end models, but you can count on being able to use that device for way more than 2-3 years.

As for WiFi and LTE issues, haven’t had any on my XS Max. I use wireless charging so no charging issues either.

The last video I saw from painfully honest all he did was talk about how the XS was a very minor update and it wasn’t worth it, and how much better the note 9 was. So now he’s back??! Lol.

Yes he is, as he stated he likes the note 9 for what it can achieve but switched back because of the eco system, which i wont argue with as ios is more integrated even if i cant get along with it myself.

And yep i agree after 2 years you are lucky if you get an update, although i have to say on the note 8 and it appears to be the same with the note 9, updates (even if just security patches) came in thick and fast and im too old now to be rooting stuff as if i managed to keep a device longer than a year i would whack cyanogen (lineage os) and be happy.

I’m all for both platforms. My only issue is not with people who use android. Use what you like!! My issues are the select few here that only post to bash Apple and brag about how much better android is. They know who they are. I appreciate your honesty and your objectivity!

I get that, which is why i kinda also bite with those that hand out the old android tropes yet probably havent used one ever or even recently (although some have done like yaself which is fair point and a valid opinion). Actually painfully honest tech did a great video early in the week about toxicity which was actually a good video to be fair and some from both camps could do with watching it

Funny thing is i do criticise companies when i think they have screwed up. sometimes Apple, sometimes Samsung (i loved the note 7) and currently Google is doing my nut in (android auto is a piece of utter bug ridden junk), and i use macbooks and hackintoshes all day long as even though i can use windows i hate the fact it cant even update itself without causing issues. I have always been clear on all the years ive been on here, i dont like IOS, it does not suit my use case and i find it complicated at times, however i also dont mind admiting that the iphones are lovely pieces of kit, well designed well made and have some top notch components in them and as mentioned early the ecosystem cant be beaten.

But reference the LG phone, i think this is going to be their last crack at it, they have never really made an impression, and to price this phone at the price they have they have shot themselves in the foot, again. LG are not up there with Apple, Samsung and Google so neither should there prices

I couldn’t agree more. If I were to ever own an android it would probably a Pixel. I like the stock android it runs. A friend of mine had a G6 before switching to iPhone 7 Plus. She had a lot of durability problems with it. I used to like the design of LG phones and how they did their skin on android. (Using other people’s phones). I know Apple isn’t perfect either. The way they handled the whole throttling thing was totally unacceptable. They should’ve just come out and say hey. Your battery is degraded, until you get a new one, your phone is going to slow down. It happened to my old iPhone 6. (Dad has it now coming from having a 5c). He put a new battery through Apple for $29 and it basically runs awesome now. Obviously not as fast as newer models, but for calling, texting, and watching videos it suits him perfect. I’m sure they will do good with the V40. I like that it has a quad DAC. But it’s so hard to compete in that price market where Apple clearly owns the high end.

Major fanboyism going on in the comments. Apple and android both have many negative aspects! buy the phone that best suits your own needs and who cares what is better for someone else.

I like the way the new iPads handle Face ID. No notch. Apple realized if they keep pushing the notch to people who don't like it there will be a push for Android. Smartphones are becoming a commodity and Apple is not immune.

This is pure Bobbins , an old battery has zero Impact on performance per say.. what happens tho is an old battery means an old processor....which in turn will slow down a phone...

These new iPhones are a waste when the newer android devices have so many more video/audio options. The fact there's not a fingerprint scanner is a big put off. Face recognition is much less convenient being you have to be in a well lit area. This is not a money issue. However, paying more for a phone with less features because it's an apple product is silly. Apple builds solid workshop audio/video computers. That's a big it! Being that you still have to pay for many services that are free on android is lame. While many paid apple services are worth it, most just have the apple brand so fanboys are more inclined to buy something that would be free on android. I could care less about large tasks. That's why I have a fully equipped MacBook i9 that I use for video and music production/editing. Yes, I have to plug my V40 in to my Mac, rather than going to the cloud... Big skippy dude. I tested and looked at both - for the simple fact that I own a MacBook. I still chose the V40.

Well if you look at it from a technological aspect, the LG has a faster processor (8 core to apples 6 core), a better screen, better camera, better battery...

On looks alone the LG just seems like another also ran Android phone. Nothing appealing about the design. As for software well..meh

Seriously? You just make that up? The Snapdragon 845 roars along (before it thermally throttles) at an impressive 10600 Geekbench. http://browser.geekbench.com/android-benchmarks. Using the Oneplus as a proxy for the LG (both same snapdragon). While the "slower" iPhone XS Max puts in a paltry 11,215. http://browser.geekbench.com/ios-benchmarks. Larger numbers are slower, right? LOL

You would be hard pressed to support your claim of a better display. They are bth great displays, and any differences would be very, very, very tiny.

It does have an extra camera, but better would have to be supported by actually photography reviews. It is probably better in some uses, but not by much.

According to toms guide https://www.tomsguide.com/us/lg-v40-thinq,review-5801.html, the LG has an inferior battery, rated at 8:48

So, yah, you nailed it!

That's why tech specs don't matter these days. LG runs the not so optimized Android.
