Heres another post on not understanding why its even a question. Because the iPhone holds its value so well, you will pay less or MAKE money to upgrade each year.

Last year I sold my 4S for 450, paid 450 for an early upgrade, then got a $200 credit from AT&T. I made 200.

This year I'll sell my 5 for 550, buy the 5S for 650, no contract extension, only cost 100 which is 100 LESS than some guy buying on contract.

Its a no brainer, and people who don't do it are not smart.

What was the $200 AT&T credit for? I was an AT&T customer and was able to get the early upgrade price but it's not like they are just throwing around $200 credits (at least back then they were not).

I don't think people who choose not to upgrade aren't necessarily smart... some people just don't need to always have the latest and greatest.

Honestly, if I had a bigger iPhone 5, I wouldn't upgrade.

With spotify offline playlists, tons of apps and photos/videos. 16gb just isn't enough for me. Will sell it on ebay for $450 and use my upgrade that I have for $199 or $299 depending on the new sizes.

Hopefully 32gb is the new base model and maybe I'll go for a 64gb. Who knows..

Same here too stuck with a 32GB iPhone 5 this time will be upgrading to 64gb or 128gb depends on the price on sim free.

AT&T was giving anyone who called and asked a 200 credit to offset the early upgrade fee. At least 10 of my friends got it as well. I believe there was a huge thread on it as well. Doubt they will do it this year, but it made it that much easier.

To the guy who said its a hassle selling online...that's why I say go through Craigslist. You usually get higher prices, meet in person, and take cash only.

I'm probably not going to upgrade unless they pull something out of their sleeve that no one was expecting. I am however really looking forward to watching the event tomorrow and I really hope it is going to be streamed live like the most recent events have been.

I'm not terribly excited based on the rumors but I can sell my iPhone 5 for less than the phone upgrade cost on my plan so I'll probably get it anyway.

I've only had the iPhone 5 for 6 months too.

Sell iphone 5 for $500 (32gb)

Buy the iphone 5S w/ 32gb for $299 + $250 (for early upgrade)

I do this every year, I get the latest iPhone for very little out of pocket. I have already called in to confirm that an early upgrade is available to me :)

Not sure I will. Probably wait for the 6, reason being that iOS 7 feels like a new phone anyway. That's bought me an extra year or so. Just hope next September lands a shiny new iPhone 6.

Or simply don't care enough to go through the hassle of selling their current phone.

It can be a pain sometimes dealing with online selling.....currently going through a chargeback issue on my HTC One sale....the phone was delivered over 2 weeks ago and I'm now out those funds until PayPal can investigate....

Yes, I've done enough selling of stuff online to know it can easily be enough hassle to make it not worth it for a small profit. I usually only do it for things I know I really don't want any more.

doing it cause i can:D
every year i sell my present phone for big bucks and make money on the new one....
5 sold for 500.00$
waiting for the 5s 128giger

If there is a 128GB option, then that will be a reason to upgrade.

What do you need 128gb for? WOW.

I always upgrade.

Bought my 32GB for £630 last year but didnt use the full capacity, so will sell and get the 16gb 5S.

Why not? It's the one device I use daily, is always with me, so if people can afford it......

:D

I'm more than likely going to get the 5S. Still haven't decided if I will order online or go into T-Mobile on launch day. Seeing that T-Mobile just released the iPhone 5 in April, I can't imagine that they'll have huge lines (except for in their high volume stores).

Are any of you who plan to sell you're iphone 5 going to leave it on iOS 6? I wonder if an iPhone 5 on iOS 6 will fetch a higher price because of the ability to jailbreak the iPhone vs a non-jailbreakable (for the moment) iOS 7 device.

If its on 6.1.3 then for sure it will be worth more than 6.1.4+

Unfortunately, my replacement from Apple tonight was 6.1.4 :(
If you are on iOS 7, then there is no way to get back to a jailbreakable FW.

iphone5 owners: why updated to a 5S?

I'm doing it because I can.

Sold my 5 for $525, buying a 5S for $199 or $299 on contract. Get the latest AND make some money.

Why not?

Without looking into it all, I'd guess your not actually making money, as you'll be paying a monthly subscription to a network?
But I see your point.

I'm changing because I can... I pay £15 per month on a rolling 30 day price plan, and I but the phone every year. I'll probably sell my iPhone 5 for £400 and buy the new one for £700 so costing me £300 each year to upgrade. But I'm only paying £15 per month on my plan.... So overall, why not have the latest :)

Here are my reasons. I'm being honest as well, so they may seem weird or stupid to some.

  • Newest features
  • I have an upgrade and will sell my iPhone 5 for $300+
  • Potential new colors
  • Potential 32GB "free" upgrade (if it's $199 w/upgrade)
  • Possible finger scanner for better security and faster downloads (no passwords for app store and itunes)
  • Because I love technology and I love having the newest thing. Therefore, I will get the iPhone 5S because it's the latest and greatest version of what I love and use daily.

I'd be paying such fees regardless of if I upgraded or not.....

And I get a pretty good deal on my bill.

I usually do the upgrade thing and pay little or even profit by doing so but..

If I sell my 5, i'll pay a little out of pocket for an AT&T early upgrade.

Then I'll have to do the same when an iPhone 6 comes out.

I'd rather let my 5 contract run up and get a 6 for the cheapest price possible if it's worthy.

That and jailbreak prevents me from really wanting to give up my 5, use a backup 3gs, get a 5S, and wait.

And the screen is really good on my 5, I don't want to play the LCD lottery again soon for something physically near identical.

I'm curious though to see what's official tomorrow.

I do like the idea of a notification light like my Galaxy nexus had.

But I'll wait until it's built into the 6 most likely

I'll tell you...I used to do it every year since the first iphone because i just HAD to. I had to have the latest and greatest blah blah blah.

But as the years went on, quality and innovation dropped dramatically...I stopped caring like i used to.

The only reason i'll be getting the new one is because my mom needs a new phone. So i'll give her my 5 (which was just replaced under warranty...again!). And i'll use her upgrade for me and get the new one.

After this, i don't really know what will happen. I honest to goodness tried Android and i don't like it. But i really feel like apple keeps getting worse at the thing i used to love them for the more, service and insane quality.

haha, good one ;)

As long as the 5S has at least one of these two features:

  1. Fingerprint scanner to unlock the phone
  2. 128 GB storage

I'll be happy. If it has both, I'll be really happy.

Bonus points for the fingerprint scanner also being used to authorize iTunes/AppStore purchases.

Even more über-bonus points for allowing different 'profiles' if you unlock the phone with the fingerprint vs passcode.

But really, either one of the top two bullet points is enough for me to upgrade my 5 to a 5S.

OK, so I was just reading about these people around here who have an iphone5 and plan on upgrading for the 5S.

But really, if the 5S has only what the rumors say (so, let's say better camera, better processor and fingerprint sensor), I don't really see any reason to upgrade.
I'm a technology addict and love to have the latest hardware but here, my iphone5 is still working perfectly and flawlessly, so is everyone's iphone5 i guess. For me, the 5S is the phone you would buy if you had an older iphone, or no iphone at all, but if you own a 5:confused:
I'd just like to know what is driving your wish to change a phone like the iphone5, and what flaws do you think it has that make you want to change it :)

EDIT: and yes, this question is for people who can't upgrade for free-or-nearly due to their contract :)

Because I want a better camera, better processor and a fingerprint sensor.....
