i was in the walt whitman store on Friday and i heard someone who worked for apple saying there are very little of them left on the eastern seaboard.

i stay away from that store if at all possible. Smitheaven for ever!
Walt witman store is terrible; its badly managed IMO and all of the geniuses are donkeys. Roseveltfield is always busy. Smitheaven is my happy medium :)

Does anybody know current situation in NYC Apple stores? I am coming over (from Europe) to NYC next w/e and plan to buy one for me... Will be there for 1 week - any ideas where/how to find and buy it if there are no iPhones in stores? thanks

Pray Apple releases a new phone this week. I heard that the AT&T stores aren't selling without a contract, but you never know.

Not sure where else you can look, maybe newyork.craigslist.com and see if someone will meet up with you while your here for a used phone.

I was talking to a friend last night who works in the Soho store in NYC. He said that they have not been out of iPhones all of this time. They have been coming in in small batches and running out quickly, but they have been coming in regularly still.

My friend was told yesterday by salesman in one store in NYC that new iPhones will be released next week and they will be in stores !?! Sounds unbelievable to me but on the other hand I can't believe that Apple will be out of stock for another 1.5 months till June to release new model, so this might be true!

This is postet via my new iphone from my hotel in NY. I came monday & first thing on schedule was to pick up 2 iphones... Got to shop at 5. With a line of i Guess 200 people waiting. Asked an employe if they have 16 giga in stock, which they didnt, only 8. Took a cap to the soho store, where there around 15 people in line. Still no 16 giga, but got 2 8 giga phones with me.

And i must say im impressed by my first hands on experience.

Got mine at a AT&T in New Orleans. I wonder if they just don't sell em to people with accents or something, obviously most will not be using them with AT&T.

You could always tell them you just moved to the US a few days back and need a phone for work or something. Might be more believable that saying it's a gift...

In AT&T Stores I've always been required to show my SSN to buy an iPhone wich I don't have, being italian...

I can't go to NJ because I don't have a car and time!

Trying again today in Soho and on 14th Av.

They shouldn't ask for your SSN unless you are activating your service immediately. You should be able to just buy one to activate later. The key is not to tell them you don't have a SSN.

I finally got mine on 14th st. Apple Store on friday, 2nd May.

The tip (suggested by an Apple employee) is: go there early, before the shop opens. We were there at 8.30 and the store opens at 9.00.

At 9.00, when the store opened, there were almost 15 persons in the line !

Then run at the counter and try to be first in the lines: usually left line is for those who wish to purchase just 1 iPhone, right is for those who want more than 1 iphone. On friday morning, at the opening there were just 20 iPhones available and only 16 Gb. "Maybe more 30 coming later this morning" said the store manager.

Sadly not all the people in the line got their iPhone (but I did !).
