Why would you ever want the volume indicator to show up at the center of the screen? Seems like Apple should make this change throughout all of iOS, not just in the video player.
You're in the middle of a game, you go to adjust the volume or even hit the button accidentally, suddenly the entire center of the screen is blocked and your guy falls off the edge of the cliff. They could at least make it semi-transparent!!

Now I want to be able to control video volume before I turn the video on. When I try, I am only able to choose the ringer volume, but as soon as I hit play for a video it comes blaring at full volume.
that depends on your system ringtone settings, it's not a bug/issue. Sounds -> ringer and alerts -> change with buttons -> 0.

A good change, but another sign of inconsistency with design. That HUD looks interactive with its design, so what happens if someone tries to "move the slider" and nothing happens? At least the old design didn't look like a control knob you could slide.

You can. In iOS 10 it's on the second page of the control center. Adjust the volume there and it will adjust it for video or music before it's being played or also while being played.

Why doesn't Apple use this volume style in the control panel rather than the hideous vertical slider in the current version...

Nice, an improvement. What I would really like, though, is when you're in landscape with the volume buttons on bottom, is for the right button to increase volume and left button to decrease volume. Right now it's backwards and it's always bugged me.

What are u reffering to?

I think he is just exaggerating the time Apple took to make so small but intuitive changes, choosing instead to focus on bringing us other things.

Apple should also deeply care about refining and making the OS a pleasure to use, as it used to. Today, it really, unquiveringly, feels like it has lost that sight against the desire to bring out new technologies. Sometimes, all the user wants is a better experience that can be had with "Refinements" as Craig claimed High Sierra to have. Here's to hoping by the time they release it, this release gets really refined for the pleasure of the user.

To me the large vertical volume sliders in iOS 11 look way more usable and easy to adjust with a thumb while holding the phone in one hand, than the thin horizontal line slider in the current version.

It's not rare that I try to adjust the brightness or volume in the current iOS 10 control center and fail because my thumb was not aligned with the thin horizontal slider (even if the touch target is actually larger than it appears).

An orientation lock button like in the YouTube app, that rotates the video if you have orientation lock enabled.

That'd be nice, but what I'd like even more is an option to always play videos in landscape, no matter the orientation of the phone, and no matter the setting of the orientation lock (in Control Center). It's safe to say that I never want to play a video in portrait (unless of course, the video itself is in portrait, in which I want it to always play in portrait).

Here's the prototypical scenario: I'm reading an article while lying in bed or on the couch (terrible habit, I know). To read while laying down, you pretty much have to lock the iPhone to portrait. The article contains a video, so you play it. With your iPhone locked to portrait, the video fills about a third of the screen. So swipe up to get the Control Center. Because a video is playing, you have to swipe again. Okay, turn of orientation lock. Dismiss Control Center. Start playing the video again. Great, it's in landscape, just what you wanted! Oops, you've shifted your body slightly and it's back to portrait mode (this happens frequently if you're laying down).

Call it a first world problem, but this drives me nuts. Again, I never want to play a landscape video in portrait.

I agree, this would probably be the best solution. Heck, don't even have an option. Orient the video based on whether it's portrait or landscape.

About time! Thank you! Of course, I always prefer VOLUME sliders to go up and down myself. You know, because you are raising or lowering the volume. Just a pet peeve. But this is a big step in the right direction. Only took 10 years!

This is a nice change. It was just obtrusive before and all these years I adjusted to it, but seeing the new slider, that makes it much more discreet.

IMG_1749.PNG The TV app in beta 1 still has the old volume UI. At least on my iPhone 7 it does.
And even under iOS 10 it was never full screen like that. When you tapped the screen or used a hardware button to change the volume you’d get the scrubber bar at the top and the REV/PLAY/FF buttons at the bottom along with a small volume slider over in the lower left corner.

Now do something about incoming call that not only covers the whole screen but also prevents you from doing anything else until it stops ringing. Look at how Android does it for a hint.
