Can YouTube videos be played in the background with the screen OFF, like in iOS 9 and 10.0?

It broke some time around 10.2 or 10.3, and it's really ****ing annoying.

It was google who “broke” it. The APIs don’t stop it happening. Use another YouTube client like ProTube and it works just fine.

Yes! It actually took YouTube forever to implement it as well, but when they finally did it was nice. When I'm watching video on a mobile device, it is highly likely I will be interrupted or distracted by something, and I ALWAYS want the ability to go back or forward 15 seconds. Same thing with audio. I want those 15 second backward/forward buttons there as well.
Yeah I also like that Overcast can do this for Podcasts. It's so useful when I'm trying to skip ahead of a section I don't care to listen to while running. I also like that Overcast lets you customize how far to skip forward and backward independently. Hopefully YouTube does this as well in the future.

Customization like that, without over complication of the basic interface most people use, is key. And very possible.

Did I miss something or is this feature missing or has the new volume hud design actually not happened on iOS 11 as just released?

It's only in youtube and maybe a few other online streaming services.
The UI of the Videos app hasn't changed.
Well not even in FB.. so in other words it's not a change in iOS, it's a change in the Youtube app haha.

It's not the app. It must be in Safari cuz you can see it on youtube.com.
Play a video in full screen in iOS10 and the UI pretty much matches the UI of Apple's own Videos app.
But watch the same video on youtube.com with iOS11 and you get the new UI described in this thread.
Now why Apple doesn't' use the new improved UI in their own Videos app is a mystery.

The original article (and others on the web) clearly indicates there was a new volume indicator for *all* videos, not just app-specific. I came here also wondering what happened to that. I guess it got cut somewhere along the way?

I used every beta. There was never a system wide change to the UI.
Look at post 21 where someone else wishes that it was system wide.
The thread is wrong. Even the graphic used in the opening post is wrong.
That big full screen volume graphic isn't from the video player app. It's from Safari.
The video player volume control is shown in post 46 and it really hasn't changed between iOS 10 and iOS 11.
