One advantage of OLED is the black color is truly black because it is actually off, the black pixels are "off" as if the device wasn't being used iirc. This is useful for power saving and also allows for a more true black color. The new iPhone will have those "ears" so Apple may want to hide the ears during use with black filling them.
OLED makes sense for that. In fact if that is what they want to do with the ears there is no other option. LCD black isn't "true black" so you would see the ears.
As for burn in I think it is overstated. If the phone isn't on constantly it should be fine. I have multiple OLED devices and I have never seen burn in, I use a Galaxy s7 edge which is my main phone every day. Personally I doubt this will be a problem. It's only if the pixels don't change color for ages, like if you left an image paused on an OLED TV and didn't turn it off.
