The X is a glimpse into the future iphone. Would completely wireless charging (let’s say Apple released this next year) in next years iphone make the X this year redundant or having some other tech that the X doesn’t have this year make it already redundant?

The X isn’t an extra line of the iPhone, it will be the new line starting next year, what happens to TouchID then? Apps have to incorporate it still, firmware will have to incorporate it still, imho it’s going nowhere, it’s just the tech can’t get it under an AMOLED screen just yet.

I will just agree to disagree here. They rushed this model/ And selling it based off face recognition. Then next year go back to Touch ID? Horrible imo.

Indeed we will have to agree to disagree. Lose TouchID in favour of FaceID but still keep R&D into fingerprint scanning technology and fingerprint algorithms patents if they have given up on TouchID? Nah.

So rush a product just to get it out? Then get it right a year later and include Touch ID again?

If they couldn't get Touch ID in the X they should wait. Why even bother if they are only going to put it back again?

Who knows with Apple

If apple are that high on face ID and they think it will work flawlessly then maybe Touch ID will not return

Again who knows but with the screen on the X they had to lose TouchID as there was no way to implement it unless they used it on the back and that’s an awful location. Either FaceID or back to passcode for the X. Also don’t forget TouchID has gone nowhere, it is still on the new 8 and 8+ tomorrow.

this is interesting!

maybe they won't have a problem, and they will cover burn-in in case it doesnt work?

I'm curious what the technical explanation is for this

They also have to have a solution for outdoor visibility on OLED (common flaw) at least on parity with 7/7+ which does a phenomenal job at that imo

maybe a special layer of coating over the glass?

Fascinated they're still finding details in the firmware, the night before the big event :D

Some of the first LG OLEDs had a burn in problem. You could see it on the display model at Best Buy. From what I understand, the current generation of OLED panels do not have that problem.

Those OLED phones you indicated at Best Buy, they run for 16 hours a day on the same demo loop. So naturally they will occur burn-in. I do agree that OLED has matured where it's not really a major issue.

Yep - until now I didn't encounter IR or even burn-in at all on my 2016 OLED which is mainly used as a PC Monitor and for extended gaming sessions. Seems like OLED is finally up to such heavy-duty tasks.

ok, so Apple have decided to go for OLED screen on the iPhone X. So you are buying a phone that costs more than $1,000 and the screen will get worse every day you use it until there is horrible burn-in..

Were talking Super Retina Display/ Super OLED! Burn in is probably not an issue?

Thus, we all know the history with OLED screens suffering from burn-in. Apple has a white bar at the bottom of the screen - do you think we will suffer screen burn-in?

I’m thinking they did secure the same screens as the S8 but turned the nit/brightness down?

I believe Apple made a distinction between typical OLED and the OLED in the iPhone X, so I'm assuming this was addressed, however have no specific confirmation.

Well, the screens are Samsung, so there's not some new mythical technology that no one else has...

Guys, just get real, Apples LCDs have had yellow tint issues on various parts of the displays (such as the bottom 3rd of the display) since pretty much forever, so it's pretty foolish to think that just because Apple has an oled, that all of the potential issues will magically be fixed.

Yep agreed.

I read that they are Samsung screens from the S6 and not Super AMOLED’s!

They are still very much trying to implement TouchID in the screen. Future iPhones will have both FaceID and TouchID, as mentioned this is very much a rushed phone put together last minute due to various manufacturing issues.

No, they will not. I thought so too but Apple even states Face ID is the future. They are all in.

Before getting a 7 I've used Samsung phones since the galaxy nexus. I never had burn in issues. Samsung makes incredible screens and with apples quality control I'm sure this will be a non issue.

I wouldn't be surprised, samsung supplies the Pixel's OLED panel but it definitely as from a few generations ago, as it wasn't nearly as good as the one on the Samsung phones released in the same time frame.

The same quality control that had yellow screen issues for years and years with their LCD's?

Samsung makes great panels, the question is if they give apple their latest and greatest. Past history suggests they won't.
