Awesome, Apple sent back my original phone exactly the way it was. On the phone with them again right now.

**Update**

Got my phone back today.

"Enclosed you will find your original iPhone. Our technicians performed full diagnostic tests on your iPhone, and either the diagnostics resolved the reported symptom(s) or the symptom(s) was not reproducible as reported when you set up the repair"

Well. It still looks the same. I sent them a note along with my phone with a video that looks bad with exact times, and put down appleservedup.com.

My guess is that they ignore this and run a diagnostic program.

I'm not sure what to do at this point. Wait for an update? I'm sick of dealing with the people at the apple store who just play dumb and I'm tired of not having a phone.

I almost want to take it back and be done with the issue.

I feel the same way. I love everything about the phone but this whole issue with the screens is BS. Im thinking about just getting an iPod Touch and going back to my crappy sprint phone. Ryan, by the way, have you already gone to an Apple Store and showed it to a genius? I was given three options (return it for repair, return it and recieve a new one but not before signing some 'legal documents', and going to an apple store and discussing it with a genius) I told the specialist that i'd rather visit the apple store and discuss it with them there. She told me I should have no problem getting a replacement and that she knew what my problem was because there had been problems with the iPod Touch too. Ah, I guess we'll see what happens.

Yeah. I took my first one back to the apple store and they replaced it with a brand new one. I sent this one into apple care. The guy at the store said if I wanted to replace this one, there would be a restocking fee...

Now that's a possibility since you can hack the Touches now to use iPhone and 3rd party apps...

Get a cheap phone and a Touch. The worse Apple will do to hacked Touches is remove the hacks and return it to "out-of-box". Apple is bricking the iPhones instead so that they work only on AT&T...

My experience

Went back to the apple store AGAIN to replace last night. I have actually had a very positive experience at the store, and they understood the problem. It helped that the genius had a PERFECT screen, and could easily see the difference. They acknowledged the problem and swapped it. Once it was obvious that the swapped one was just as bad, they told me they documented the problem, and to come back in two weeks and hope for a better batch. What was great was that they put in the paperwork that I could return, not have to explain my situation, and just swap.

Incidentally, they also told me that there still is no official word from apple on this problem. This leads me to believe that this is a hardware issue, and apple is avoiding a massive recall.

Just my thoughts,

Jeff

What did you use to show them the problem? Jay-Z album cover?

Has anyone purchased a phone in the last week or so that has this issue? I'm thinking of giving Apple a call and just returning the phone and waiting a couple weeks before buying a new one. I'll order online as I don't think our Apple store has enough demand to move these bad phones.

I got a week 38 from online this week, so I'd say the online store doesn't move out the weeks that quickly either.

Bought 7 days ago. They told me my batch had just arrived at
the store for a day or 2.

I wonder if the phones now are getting better? I sure wish we'd get some more week 39, or maybe even week 40 information.

I just received a week 41 replacement directly from China (it arrived today) for a previous phone purchased from the Online Store two weeks ago which was returned due to the negative black issue. This one unfortunately does as well with the same LCD type (7455232 series).

BTW, for those that are interested here is a photo I took of the previous phone (on the left) compared to another iPhone without the negative black issue at the power off screen. Both have a 7455232 series LCD and are set to maximum brightness. On the negative black phone the earth looks more like a black hole. The black background also has the characteristic silvery-greenish tint.

People are saying (at least on the Touches) that 1.1.1 fixes it a bit. What firmware did yours come back with?

I'd say upgrade it to 1.1.1 (if you have AT&T) and see what you get.

If not, well, this explains the "price drop"...

It shipped with firmware 1.1.1

I would be interested to know just how widespread this issue is. I've seen some report the issue to go as far back as week 32 units.

Nope, not at all. Mine shipped with 1.0.2 and I upgraded to 1.1.1, no difference whatsoever.

Just to clarify, I ended up with a week 39 with the 7455232 panel. I think we can all agree now that this panel is really the issue here. Not only does mine display dark colors terribly, it also makes the white screen look yellow.

I also have the negative black issue.

But it doesn't bother me, because blacks are hard enough to see on such a tiny screen anyway. If it starts bugging me more, maybe I'll sell it and get another one, but I don't think its worth it at the moment.

Some good news to report..

Greetings all..

I've been following the negative black forum threads for quite some time and it has been the single reason I've delayed my purchase of an iPhone. I'm happy to report that I received my iPhone yesterday and all looks well.

Ordered: 10/10/2007 (Apple Online Store)
Received: 10/12/2007 (Super fast shipping :apple:)
Week: 41
LCD: 7455232
Shipped Version: 1.1.1

There is no evidence of any negative black issue at all. There are zero stuck/dead pixels. This screen is absolutely amazing! :)

It won't be long before other and better phones hit the market. Eventually Apple will need to deal with this.

Their customer service appears to be on the decline. I would suggest if you really like the phone and want one without an issue continue to hammer them until your satisfied.

There are 7455232 which have mild negative blacks. Mine was not horrible, but enough to make me go out and find a 7459072 version. Differences between the two are that the black on the bars of 7455232 are actually better looking than 7459072, which seemed yellow/red-tinged to me. At the same time black in 7459072 is deeper.. confusing situation..

I exchanged my week 38 iPhone which had the negative black screen issues I didnt think i had such a problem with it until i had seen more photos of the good screens vs bad screen postings, I had no problem at the Apple store making the exchange I got a week 35 which is perfect no negative black screen issues, i was surprised the Apple store still had some left unless they pulled the newer stock because of the screen issues.

Looks like weeks 36-40 are the bad ones. Week 41's the charm?

Picked up an iPhone with:

SN: 7R738xxxxxx
LCD: 7459072

No issues with the negative black screen, at least based on evaluation with appleservedup.com. Haven't loaded any particularly dark movies yet to check out. Switching from BB on T-Mobile and am very pleased.
