As expected, I just got off of the phone with my Executive CS rep. She received my last phone, and gave it to the engineers who, after extensive talks, decided that the screen was within specification. Even after viewing my earlier posted video, she claims the screen is within spec.

Their official word, from Executive CS, and their own team of engineers is that our problem is within spec.

They offered me a full refund while making it sound like they were doing me a favor.

I'm officially out.

well, I just shipped mine earlier today to apple care and if they do not wish to replace my phone, i will insist for a refund and I will keep trying to buy iphone and hope to get week 39 or above which should have the good screen

Week 34 working here

My first post!

I bought my week 36 a few weeks ago and got a 7455232 panel ID. I went back to my Apple Store the other day to ask for a replacement. They gave me a week 34 with the same series display and shows blacks perfectly. Before I updated to 1.1.1 it had the white checkered pattern, but that disappeared after the update. I wouldn't say that it's optimal, but I don't have a reason to return it. I tested the Jay-Z album cover and used http://www.appleservedup.com to test the screen out. No dead pixels and no negative black.

The Genius at the Apple Store hinted that there have been fewer problems with iPhones manufactured before the price drop. I thought it was interesting.

I really hope to hear continued updates from those buying the phone, to hear if the problem is going away or not.

Does anyone know if there will be a fix for the negative black screen issue in the next update?

We could only hope. I have a perfectly great phone, if it wasn't for this.

Quite frustrating for such a brilliant device, to have such an annoying issue.

I'm new here, but I wanted to post my experience since this thread has been so helpful to me.

I exchanged my first iphone, which had no negative black issue (serial started with 7R738, I didn't know to check the LCD ID then, so I don't know which screen it was) because of a dead pixel and immediately regretted it when I came home and found that it had light leaking from the bezel and a bad case of negative blacks (serial 7V738, LCD 7455232).

I went back to the Apple Store yesterday to exchange the new iphone and got the spiel about how it's supposed to be that way and that they would exchange it for me for this issue only once (I got the same spiel on the dead pixel issue too). The Apple Genius also wanted to give me a refurb, but I insisted that I was within my 14 days, so I got a brand new one. I looked at the serial while she was inputting all of my information, which was 7U739 and didn't hold out much hope since I'd read here that there were bad ones from week 39, but its LCD ID ended up being 7459072 and the screen was perfect, so I was quite relieved.

While I was waiting to see the Apple Genius, I checked out the iphones on display and found that two out of the five I checked had the negative black issue. They all had the 7455232 screen, so it confirms that some 7455232 screens are good and some are bad.

So, to summarize my experience:
Serial 7R738, LCD ID unknown: good
Serial 7V738, LCD ID 7455232: bad
Serial 7U739, LCD ID 7459072: good

Any updates? The iPod Touch update supposedly fixed the negative black issue. I hope the iPhone update does it too. Truthfully, I can live with the negative black, it only annoys me for a few minutes here and there, and I hope a software fix is all that's needed.

Dude, that's bad.

I can't even fathom paying $400 for an unsubsidized phone, then having to get into a 2 year contract (if you're on AT&T), and then getting that crap...

Not acceptable...

p.s.: I just posted shots of my 4Gig iPhone screen for a Touch user who wanted to see what it looked like with a show he was watching.

If you have ANY problems with the screen, "firmware fix" or not, take it back...

Agreed. I didn't think it was too bad at first, but after watching some videos it is pretty damn bad. I called apple yesterday and they are sending a new phone, which hopefully won't have the same problem. No contract by the way, went the pre-paid route.

those who sent their iphones in for repair service, did you guys get new phones back or your old one?

apple refuses to send me a replacement. they will only offer me a repair service.

Repair service usually means replacement in the form of a refurb.

The customer rep. told me they were just going to go ahead and send me a new phone, said it'd take about 7 days.

so you got a replacement? what did you tell them? they told me it's not their policy to send replacements.

I told them that I was having problems with the screen and that it had a problem displaying blacks properly. The rep just told me that "were going to go ahead and send you a new one" they mentioned that they were going to send me the loaner phone, then id get the new phone in about 7 days.

they offered me a loaner phone too. but that's 30 bucks. what they basically are doing is sending you the loaner phone, having you send your iphone to them, and then they send you a refurb one. and there's no guarantee that it will be a perfect screen.
