I second that question. I have been reading other threads about this issue, and am wondering when will be safe to buy. It seems like it is still a bit of a toss-up right now..

posting from my new iPhone. Picked up a 7u739 with the 5 series screen. Looks fantastic compared to a 7459072 I picked up 2 days ago which had no negative blacks but had color issues.. The bar on the home screen where the time is looked bad from the tophalf, like it looked more lavender gray than regular gray. Maybe people are focusing on the no negative black issues and noticing offcolor screens? Please check out your 7459072s..

i just picked up a 7U738 but havent opened it yet. anyone have problems with one?

Seems to be hit or miss with the week 38 iPhones i would swap it for an earlier week if you purchased it at an apple store or just open it and test it out you may have a good one if not you can always exchange it.

I'm guessing all the negative black screen issues must be fixed in the newer weeks, since the postings here have halted?

I hope that's the case. But then again I won't be the sacrificial lamb to go buy one and then have to spend hours for one of the "genius" to take care of me.

Some 7459072 are warmer/cooler colored than others..

Can anyone add info to this?

To follow up on my previous post, I was able to swap out the negative black (week 41) unit at an Apple Store for a week 39 phone with a 7459072 LCD.

No negative black problems, but the screen has a definite bluish cast--probably one of the worst I have seen. I am a little disappointed, as I have seen several iPod Touch units which have brilliant displays--very bright with pure whites, as opposed to the more yellow or blue casts I have seen in whites on iPhones. I was hoping that Apple was starting to work out its quality control problems with its LCD displays.

I still don't know why Apple would still continue shipping defective iphones. Are they hoping that enough people will not see the problem? In any case I don't think I'll be buying an iphone anytime soon or at least until the second version comes out.

Are you going to swap out your week 39 for a different one?

Went to the apple store today and a genius replaced my phone with a refurb, screen is perfect - no negatives or checkerboard pattern.

So after going through the 1-800 number and getting 4 different phones, I finally got a chance to get to an Apple store today. Told one of the employees at the Genius Bar about the problem with the screen. He took a look at it, went to a website that had a grayscale pattern, and a minute later gave me a new phone which he let me test first.

First one was flawless. It's a week 40 with a 7459072 panel. This screen looks amazing in comparison. At first everything looked really bright since I was so used to looking at the other screen.

I'm pretty sure that Apple would say that this display is within the normal variation of LCD types, so I'm not going to try. It's certainly less of an issue to me than the negative black problem.

The primary issue may be that the color temperature hasn't been properly calibrated on some of the LCD's:

The Color Temperature of your display should normally be set to 6500K or sRGB. Setting too high a color temperature (eg 9300K) will result in images which are rather blue ("cold", artistically-speaking), while too low a color temperature (eg 3200K) will make the display look very yellowy.

What is really needed for a number of iPhone display issues would be some sort of contrast/gamma adjustment application. Since it's running OSX, I would hope that someone could create such a beast for the iPhone.

I also find it interesting that they still have production problems in the week 41 version of the phone. I was planning on getting one, believe that after week 38 all the screens would be better. What happened to the 5 series screen? Is it still in production? and is it still a hit or miss situation with the 5 series? I have read lots of posts about how perfect the 5 series is compared with the 7 series.

Sad to say but mine has the screen issue

It seems like maybe a different 7 series replaced the 5 series, and that different 7 series is quite good.

It's the one series 7 that has a lot of problems. If you read back (i'm not being rude, I just don't know them off my head), you can find the exact codes of the ok 7s and the usually bad 7s.

If its unlocked you may have trouble when returning it for an exchange, unlocking the iPhone voids the warranty unless you can relock it.

It would be hard to actually prove your case about the screen problem while at the same time having it unlocked. Is it still within the 14 day period? If so, what I did was just return it, though I had to pay the restocking fee. I just restored the phone to its original 1.0.2. firmware via itunes. They took my phone to the genius bar to get it checked out but I don't think they could have done anything else but turn it on since it required activation, like it was when I first bought the phone. The only problem with restoring it is you can't really prove that it has a screen problem if you were going to use the appleservedup.com method. If I brought the phone unlocked into the apple store, I most certainly would have been refused services.

thanks for your advise. yup its still under the 14 day warnty..if i till it the problm goes away..im from the philippines and i can just sell these for $500-600..Thanks for the advise!!!

Finally!

iPhone # 8... Good screen! Genius told me "this is your last one..." Its a week 40.

It will be encased in steel.
