Yea, this 4 Gig phone that "no one wanted" turned out to be the $299 gem...

Yup, interestingly enough... I stopped by the ATT store today near my work to test out their screens - all on display (3) were 4gb versions and all had the 5 series displays.

My feeling is, if I can buy a cheapo $99 mp4 player that has a screen without this issue, why do $400 (or $600) iPhones have them? Apple needs to step up and recognize that the problems is not only with the touches, but also the phones.

Welcome to lower prices... (Wal-Mart?)

Would you mind checking if your phone has the "interlacing" effect when watching video, described by some users in some posts above?

S/N Prefix: 7R737
Panel ID: 7459072

Purchased on 10/24 from Apple Store Arden Fair in Sacramento. Display is perfect. No negative blacks. No dead/stuck pixels. Good color, contrast, and brightness. I'm very happy. :D

No, doesn't have it.

It may be the way they are ripping the DVD's. On DVD's with interlaced video I usually hit the "de-interlace" setting in Handbrake...

Trust me, it isnt the way we're ripping videos, the lines show up on the videos from the itunes stores too and it shows on the ui as well.

I'd have to agree especially when you're paying out $400 bucks it should be flawless and if it isn't its time to return it or make an exchange for one thats perfect.

You're not alone

Re: I went in to the Apple store and was there for an hour and a half trying to get the staff to admit to the contrast problem on my screen. None of them were willing to admit what seems to me to be patently obvious - iPhone LCDs (all the ones I've seen so far) have terrible contrast ratios. They treated me like some kook who complains irrationally about everything. I finally got them to agree to an exchange within 30 days, but it took a LOT of complaining and putting up with some pretty snotty, superior attitudes on their part. I'm NOT impressed with Apple Store customer service on this issue.
......

Same sort of mind f..k thing happened to me when the track pad on my new iBook G3 didn't work properly. They tried to tell me that it was due to my using "hand lotion." Fortunately, I'd owned a PowerBook before that, so I knew it wasn't true. Still, it feels awful to be ganged up on like that.

Apple's not playing straight with people on iPhone issues, is even worse in a way, than there being problems to begin with.

Hi. I just bought an iPhone today, my second one after returning my first unlocked phone. The first one I had was a week 37 and had LCD : 7455232. My second iPhone (current one) is a week 40 and has a great screen. LCD: 7459072 Checked it on appleservedup.com and everything is perfect, no dead pixels and very good gray scale. But I'm guessing it is still 50/50 chance of getting a good screen.

Its just unfortunate especially when you pay $400 for an iPhone to get a bad screen and have to go through the exchange process, i'm glad mine went smooth.

Lots of days, with no updates. :) Things getting better, or people just not complaining so much?

Sure hope things are getting better.

I just ordered another iphone a few days ago from apple.com and its being shipped from china and it is a 7s744. anyone have any problems with the 7s7 screens? anyone have a week 44?

Over the last couple of days I unlocked 7 iphones ranging from weeks 39 - 41. No problems with the screens. Maybe the fault was repaired with the current batch...

Its really hit or miss with the negative screen issues i imagine this issue has been fixed with the week 42 and above iPhones since no one has been posting about any recent issues, my iPhone was a 7S738 which was a week 38 and i swapped it out for a week 35 and its perfect.

Are week 42+ iPhones out already?

Well, I bought mine about a week ago from the 5th Avenue store and discovered it had the blacks issue. As I am an unlocker and taking it back to the UK, I wanted to make sure that I got a good one. The genius I spoke to said that they had had a few complaints about this and it was a known issue with the latest batch they had. He said that a replacement would more than likely have the same problem and assured me that it would be fixed in a firmware update just like the iPod touch had had.

What week was it? And the iPod touch wasnt fixed through a firmware update, it just made it a bit better, which is still not good enough.

There was a posting above that said he ordered a iPhone and it was a week 44

Well I've also had to quickly answer my own question. Currently unlocking an iPhone bought on 1st Nov. It's a week 43. Screen fine...

Just came home with new iphone bought at Apple Store. Week 44 phone and it has the negative black issue. Going to go to Apple Store again tomorrow and try to exchange it.

So does anyone know if the 'negative black' issue will be fixed in the upcoming firmware update?
