The line was an hour and a half and after I had gotten it I had to go right then...

Here is a picture at an angle, what the image is supposed to look like...

And here it is straight on...

At-least it will be much more obvious that this new phone has a problem...

I just got back from the Apple Store. I restored it, and used the iPhone tool to activate it...

I got up to the genius bar, and brought up the black album. She said that there was a slight difference, and because it was under the 14 day limit she could swap it out. My new phone has the 7455232 LCD panel, and it is horrible compared to my first one. The negative black is worse than in any pictures I've seen on the internet... The serial number is 32733******, so I think she gave me a refurb... The lady was nice, and even though she didn't see it as bad she still swapped it out...

So now, I have a refurb (I payed for a new phone) with a HORRIBLE display...

What do I do now?

Also, thanks to everyone who suggested things to do!

What do you do?

Swap it again, of course.

How would you know it had the negative issue if it hadnt even been activated??

You can see it on the activation screen: The grey/white line under the title Needs Activation or whatever it says does not appear as grey-white but instead negative-black or invisible.

Also there is a black halo glow around the earth instead of a normal blue/white one.

How would you know it had the negative issue if it hadnt even been activated??

Hold down the power button to get the red power off slider. When it darkens the screen the earth photo goes negative. It's pretty obvious, which is why I don't understand how the Apple Store employees that I've dealt with have been so blind to it. Of course, the extreme brightness of their store does make it really hard to see the problem.

I dealt with the issue on the touch, and have messed with enough good iPhones to know when a screen is bad as well.

Plus, what Fuchal said above me. The bottom half of the transparent black boxes glow negative.

Since the Apple Store in Dallas, TX was kind enough to replace my unactivated iPhone with an activated one, I snapped some photos to add to the pile.

Sorry if I'm out of place guys... but I had to relate this somewhere. I've been through 5 iPod touches all with some degree of the negative black problem. After being trated like crap (but still getting exchanges) from the Apple Store, they told me the next one would have to be a refund... they would not sell me another touch. So lo and behold, I take this last one home and it has the very same problem.

At my friends' prodding, I went and exchanged it for an iPhone which have "much better screens!" Well, I synced this one up and whaddya know, this has a worse screen than the worst iPod touch! What the hell am I supposed to do at this point? Do I really have to go back a 7th time? At what point do they start reimbursing me for gas!? Seriously though... what is everyone's advice?

WOW, that screen TonyL posted is the WORST thing Ive ever seen!!!! I definitely didnt have anything resembling that.

Serial Numbers / Production Weeks?

A few people have referenced serial number series and production weeks. I am going to buy an I-phone within the next day or so and want to make sure i don't get one with a bum screen. Thanks Ed

Perfect!

I went back and the same lady who helped me earlier said you again, so whats up this time? I brought my MacBook (with a modded apple logo which turned a few employee's heads) to show her this thread and my pictures of the second iPhone (the refurb). I told her that the serial number started with 3, so it was a refurb and that the feildtest showed the series 7 display. She then said that she cant open a bunch of boxes looking for the right one, and she found a iPhone (new in packaging) with a serial number of 7R738******. I know that this one was a good display, and said it was fine. After opening it, I went straight to the black album, and it was perfect! What an improvement! I guess just saying I know what I'm talking about made her see that it was a real problem, and that I'm not some kid just wanting a new phone.

So now I am happy with my perfect display, the display number is 7459072.

Thanks again to whoever helped me with my questions!

I got a week 38 iphone and it had a sucky screen with light leaks. Steer away from week 38! In any case I asked for a refund until they fix everything up.

I got a new week 37 after having gone through two week 35's for the reflective issue then another for a dead pixel. Finally they just gave me a new one...this time a week 37 with the exact same screen number as yours and it looks excellent. Guess week 35 was a bad week for the iphone.

Does yours say 7R737*****?

LCD Panel ID : 7455232

On both phones with this issue.

It looks like not all 7 series phones have this issue. Mine doesn't, and it's also a 7455232. Displayed the Jay-Z album both at max brightness with auto off, and at my normal brightness setting (about 50% with auto brightness on).

However, mine is a Week 29 (serial number starts with 7T729...)

I ordered a refurb'ed 8GB iPhone on Monday, and it will arrive on Friday.

Has anyone received one that they've ordered this week? Do you think Apple has ceased shipment of the "defective" ones by now? I wonder if they've added it to their testing process of refurbs?

Man, I hope mine is ok!

Ive noticed on videos that have alot of dark scenes that I have to hold it as a slight angle or else there is a shimmer to many parts of it. IMO its not that bad, but at what point is it unacceptable?

i have the same issue (depending on the lighting around me). i've had my phone since day one.

Its a crap shoot really. No way of telling what the screen will be like until its out of the box.
