Does the new firmware address the screen issue? Someone in the update thread said his looks perfect now.

That's seems to be what is happening with the Touches. Same crappy screen, but fixed in software. Either the way the video chip drives the screen or gamma corrected so that the blacks are now grays instead (elleviating the negative blacks).

Here's a question for the folks with the issue...... If we take the original picture seen here.....

and compare it to one that has been flipped or "inverted" in photoshop as I did below...... What does that look like?

?

Here's an update for everyone. I stopped by the Apple Store today and they are going to swap out my phone for me. :) They didn't have any to give me at the time so they ordered one and will notify me when it comes in. But the Genius was really nice about it. He just compared it to one they had at the store, and asked me if I could tell the difference between the two. He said mine was one of the worst he's seen. Anyways, thanks, Apple!

I don't get what you mean? The first image is black and the second image is white, which would look fine on phones with the issue.

If you'd like me to describe the issue, the black image looks like the inverted image, but black (i.e. shadows flipped, etc.).

Just received my Refurbished 8GB iPhone that I ordered Monday.

It's a Week 34, with 5755136 LCD.

It is FLAWLESS! I got lucky, I guess!

I don't think that's a really good example. Although it's obvious which is darker on my MBP, on my iPhone they look about the same. Bringing up the Jay-Z picture shows all these weird bright spots.

Just used it to compare to a flawless screen at the Apple store. Side by side, good screen vs bad- it's very apparent. After the genius initially told me it was only an iPod touch issue, I showed him. He walked in the back and got me a new iPhone.

When I first read this thread, I read it on my iPhone. I couldn't tell if I was affected because I didn't know what the Jay-Z album was supposed to look like.

What is your build date on your new iPhone is it week 38 ?

Another update on mine. I've been forwarded to Executive CS now, and they are having me ship my phone in to them so an engineer can see it. They'll ship me another when I ship mine, so that'll be #5. Hope it works.

Them telling me "it's a back lit LCD, so of course it won't show perfect blacks" so many times in the last few days made me round up my other such devices to compare. Though I love how they make it sound like this is some new tech., it's not.

Anyway, I figured out how to explain it better now. Take something with a back lit LCD, like a digital camera, or even an older iPod. Find a nice photo or something and look at the screen straight on. It should look OK. Now, tilt it down, up, sideways, whichever, to an extreme angle. Notice how now, the blacks and other dark colors glow.

That's how our screens look when viewed straight on. Something other back lit LCD have been able to do for many years now. Including some of their own.

Are your other LCD screens multi-touch LCDs? It may not be the newest technology but it isn't completely apples-to-apples comparing it to standard LCDs is it?

It's a week 38 with screen version 5755136.

Old one was a week 33 with screen 7455232.

One of the first things I noticed was how much more the touch keyboard buttons stood out. Due to the issue with the rendering of black, the letters and numbers were somewhat lighter than they should've been.

Does the serial number starts with 7R7 or 7S7?

The Dallas Store straightned it out with the Southlake Store, and I got a brand new never before used phone.

Serial # 7R739
LCD Panel - 7455232

Verdict - Just as bad, maybe worse.

Conclusion - No phone is worth this much trouble. That's phone #4, and trip #4 to Apple Stores where I've been told the screen is normal and have even been accused of hacking and when I denied that, called a liar.

I'm sending it back and will turn away now.

Sorry not to be straight on this thread focus but could you please tell me if 7R739 is with 1.1.1 firmware ?
I am waiting for a 7R739 (ship in france).
Thanks for your answer.

My iPhone has the S in the serial number i wonder what the S and the R means?

There goes my theory that the R has the better screen. At one point I thought the R version came from another factory with the good screens but I guess I was wrong.

I've so far went through 4 7R7 iPhones all with bad screens.

I was just thinking...how can Apple let this go on for quite a long time and not commit to actively fixing this problem?!?!

Some people report that 1.1.1 fixes their screen but others claim otherwise. So does 1.1.1 fix this problem or no? And if not, when will we see a fix??

This is completely inexcusable for such an expensive and "premier" product.

(I'm just pissed because my iphone's screen is horribly affected and I can't go exchange it because it's unlocked)

My Journey With This Issue

Ok, bottom line. My iPhone was not rendering those grays. And let me tell you, the Jay-Z album cover is a GREAT test. Basically if i tilted the iPhone a certain way, it would look closer to normal, but it's at this angle you would expect it to not look right. So looking at it head on was where i was seeing the gray/black distortion.

So I decided to take my phone to my local Apple store. When the Mac Genius Brian asked what my issue was, I said I need to see one of your iPhones to compare it to mine. I brought up appleservedup.com right there on the spot. To my surprise, his demo unit was only slightly better than mine and i started to feel deflated. He started to feed me some crap about mine looking brighter, then we made sure both settings were identical.

He suggested that we watch the Iron Man trailer because he knew it had a lot of black in it. I was all for it. Sure enough his looked better and he was able to see how my blacks were washed out. So I suggested I get a replacement, but there was no way i was leaving without testing it. He whips out a brand new one and i goto appleservedup.com and compared to both his demo unit AND my iPhone. Lo and behold, this new one actually showed everything properly. Then i checked the serial number on his demo unit...started with 7R7. So this new one I ended up taking home actually looked way better than his demo unit. So this is definitely an issue. And I was skeptical about it at first and wasn't even sure if appleservedup.com was a good test, but it is. The difference between this new unit and the other two was literally night and day.

For anyone else out there who is in my area, here is the info from my trip.

Apple Store - Westfarms Mall, Connecticut
Mac Genius - Brian F.
His demo unit - Demo unit #2 (labeled on the back)

It is their job to push back on this issue and the dude was in disbelief right off the bat. He even almost had me convinced this was the way the displays were supposed to look. But a side by side comparison to a "good" display leaves no question about this issue. Anyone having this issue is entitled to a replacement in my opinion. And don't let them give you a new one without testing it first. AND, request one with an SN# that does not start with 7R7.

P.S. - My new iPhone SN# starts with 327.

Was the activation bypassed when he opened up the brand new phone in the Apple Store? How would you get beyond that part to do the testing?

he popped my sim in it.

when he pulled it out of the box though, i was able to browse to the sites. i dont know how that works, but it did.

I have a phone with a serial number beginning 327 with a 7 series screen and I have the inversion issue bad.

Nope, my problems were post 1.1.1.

Perhaps they looked good prior to 1.1.1?

Turns out the replacement iPhone i got yesterday had a dead green subpixel. I set up another Genius Bar appointment and got a new iPhone today. Checked everything before I left. All good. No hassles either.

The way I figure, three dead or stuck subpixels on a 1920x1200 display is acceptable (and often considered an acceptable standard). Three subpixel anomalies out of 6,912,000 total subpixels is... well, a very fractional percent. However, that percentage transfered to the iPhone would allow for .2 (point two) subpixels to be faulty. Not to mention that I view those subpixels on my iPhone at a much closer distance than an LCD monitor. It was a green subpixel about half-way down the screen and about one-third of the distance from the right side of the screen.

It was very distracting and I'm glad that Apple took care without issue.

They put in your old SIM which completely activates the phone... Worked for me, twice now.
