First impressions

I thought that this would be good but its really slow. I was thinking of transferring my photos from Aperture to iphoto BUT have just downloaded Aperture 3.1 and the difference is huge - really speedy BUT why Apple did we have to wait so long for you to sort this out. As for iMovie on iLife 11 despite my expectations I'm very disappointed - thank goodness I use FCP. For photos I'm sticking with Aperture

I really enjoy the fact that you HAVE to email out pics through iPhoto now and it limits you to 10 pics max. Stupid program.

This seems to happen every update. If a library has some corruption issues (nearly guaranteed on old/large libraries like mine,) this happens.

They *REALLY* need to make an auto-repair part of the install process.

I think I'll wait for the first patch to it ... Thanks for the heads up.

The fact that they are not supporting the AppleTV that they were still selling up to a few weeks ago is shameful. If I had bought a 1st Gen one this year I would feel extremely angry. As it is, I have had my AppleTV a couple of years, and I cannot see the update to iPhot '11 being worth my while given that I will lose a lot of functionality.

You can't drag the photos to the mail application in the dock anymore?

it's a sad state when people are "losing" their photos.. what you should be reading is "people are having to pull photos from backups"

cause you know.. Hard drives never crash and they last for decades

Of course if Apple made MobileMe FREE, then iLife '11 upgraders would have a place to backup their photo libraries, just in case Apple's software wasn't GM and ready for Prime Time! Having items not ready for Prime Time is not new for Apple... Mobile Me anyone.

Well, maybe one can surmise that the second Server Farm in NC is actually plans to offer their suite of goods for free, just like Google? ;)

It's possible... Not likely, but possible. :apple:

Add iPhone 4 to the list, the iMac screen issue, MacPro video cards.... the list goes on. Do Apple actually have a R&D dept? Or do the field testers just go round the world and take the photos for the Keynote presentations?

This is a ****ing schoolboy error and Apple really needs to wise up and stop cutting corners. And they have a cheek to talk about MS. They are continually blinded by their massive profits and the loyal customer is paying the price for their mickey mouse products.

Never install version 1.0? Fair enough. But we're talking about 9.0...

Installing x.0 is always a risky endeavor. Or in the case of Mac OSX, 10.x.0 :)

I think my iMac came with 10.6.2 or 10.6.3, but I heard of folks having problems upgrading to 10.6.0.

regardless, it's a pain and a headache to try to rebuild your library.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

For everyone that tries to upgrade and it hangs in the middle, uninstall the Xvid plugin for QuickTime! I tried to as my library was upgrading and it said "Xvid is in use". I force-quit the upgrade, uninstalled Xvid, and it worked! Phew

You're assuming way too much when it comes to the average user.

With hard drive space as cheap as it is and with myself only using iPhoto to sync with my iphone/ipad mostly - I keep all my raw photos in folders outside of the programs. Worst case - I have full backups to fall back on.

I love technology and that we're in the digital age - but ultimately - there's something to be said about the old days and always having physical media (photographs) which could get burned, lost, water logged - were at least safe from data errors.

So that being said again - hard drive space is "cheap" - no reason not to archive all your photos as a precaution/safety.

The title of the story made me first think that the program was giving users eyestrain or something, causing physical headaches.

Apple is actually conducting a test of how many users are leveraging Time Machine for their backups. ;)

If you have 50,000+ photos, how do you know which ones are missing? Should one simply re-import all their photos from a Time Machine backup? Then they get converted to iLife '11 format and, again, will some not import? How will a user know which ones couldn't be imported?

Even Advil cant get rid of this headache

DO NOT UPGRADE WAIT FOR UPDATE - IF YOU CAN'T WAIT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKUP!!!!!

Just got iLife11. Waiting Approx 40 minutes for the installation to complete and then i open iPhoto. Im told my library needs upgrade, I click upgrade. After a few seconds Im told this library cannot be upgraded. Hmmmm. Ok i think... i'll check permissions etc etc, but wait nearly all of the photos from this year have now been deleted.

I have a time machine back up so, no great loss. I started a new library and imported all my originals in again and then added all the modified pictures too.

Quiet bizarrely doing this lead to many of my older events being named correctly. The more recent ones just being the dates as you'd expect.

So to all reading this waiting for the shiny new box to land a word of advice when it comes to updating. DONT. - Wait for the update which will no doubt arrive in the next few days.

I have spent about 3 hours now, importing, organising events and now i've started on adding Faces. Oh well back to it just 1873 more faces to identify.

Apple TV old version works?

I saw this on one of the forums:
"That worked perfectly. Unselecting the photos from syncing, forcing it to sync, rebooting the AppleTV and selecting the photos to be synced again worked perfectly. Thank you for the assistance!"

So I guess it will work. I can't confirm that, but it's something to check out.

Guess I chose the right time to "split" my libraries

My iPhoto '09 library had grown entirely too large. It worked fine in my Mac Pro, but I recently sold it and went to an older iMac with the external drive for the photos (temporary until I get my Drobo FS in). Long story short, iPhoto '09 wouldn't load my library (just beach-balled forever). In turn I decided to split my photos up by years (extracting the originals and modified folders out of the main iPhoto library and dividing by guesstimated year from imports, titles, etc). I just created multiple libraries for each year (with iPhoto '11) and imported all the photos as appropriate. Overall I am not seeing any loss of photos (although I have lost albums and some Master / modified relationships). But all the original and modified photos are present and things are _much_ snappier.

So far I'm liking iPhoto '11. If only because it finally got me around to cleaning up my mess :)
