What do you want? "Changed code in line 846 of sub-routine that caused minor hang errors on quitting the app"? They didn't explain anything because there was nothing to explain.

BS. You are speculating as to WHY they pulled it. There isn't anything documenting a high level reason.

support.microsoft.com

Complain all you like about Microsoft they document the hell out of their patches and updates assuming you know how to navigate around their knowledgebase. List most of MS's stuff its not very intuitive. Any type of update that is released they document exactly what it is, what it does, and what it fixes and if there are subsequent fixes for the original patch the site documents why they need to revisit the issue and typically a link to the original web page for the patch not this delete the patch off the site and replace it with a NEW patch crap. Occasionally corp politics gets mixed into the updates. (No company wants to look like a bunch of idiots for a blunder F, then again you'd think MS would have gotten use to that image by now.) But for the most part from an IT perspective their documentation is only surpassed by Linux and other *nix varients.
So far I'm not at all impressed by Apple and their updates, their documentation, and their methodology for releasing their updates. Again how many updates in the last year have been pulled hours after release? I know of 1 that has been pulled by MS over the last 3 years. NOT cool. Not cool at all. Apple's kung fu needs to be better, stronger, and quicker then Microsoft's and right now, IMHO, this kind of screw up doesn't make me much of a believer.

The first rule of iPhoto 4.0.2 is... you do not talk about iPhoto 4.0.2.

The SECOND rule of iPhoto 4.0.2 is...

Regarding the cancer joke...

First, in point of fact, the joke made on the other thread was different. That joke was that iPhoto 4.0.2 caused cancer, and that's why they pulled it, whereas this joke was that 4.0.3 cured cancer. A bit of a difference there.

Now, as someone who's dealt with cancer many times (I've lost two grandparents, a step-father, an aunt, and two good friends to various kinds of cancer), I feel somewhat qualified to voice an opinion here. In general, I don't find 'cures cancer' jokes to be in terribly bad taste. In this case it seemed a little close to home with SJ, but it certainly had a reasonable share of an 'approach life with a smile' attitude. The 'causes cancer' jokes, I think, ought to be approached more cautiously. The one in the previous thread did seem to me to be in bad taste, again significantly because of being close to home.

However, not all such jokes are, necessarily, in bad taste. It is always good to keep an open mind, IMO, and try to laugh when you can. Here's a poem I wrote a few years ago that seems somewhat applicable:

Life is for Laughing!

Life is for laughing,
Life is for playing,
Life is for running and having some fun!

Life is for living,
Life is for loving.
Tell me, tell me, have you begun?

A life without laughing,
A life without loving,
A life without running and playing and such,

Is a life that is diing,
A life that is ending,
A life that doesn’t ammount to much.

On topic: I haven't had any problems with either 4.0.2 or 4.0.3. I guess I've been lucky.

Each time Apple releases a ner version of iPhoto I wait with baited breath to see how fast it will run. On each and every occasion I find it just isnt a patch on Photopresenter. Why on earth doesn't Apple have a look at how they have made their application so fast and incorporate the same methodology into iPhoto. The fact that iPhoto is so slow is a constant pain to me.

Photo Presenter can be found here.

Installed it on my iBook G4 800 - no difference for me. iPhoto still takes 10-15 sec. to close. :(

Because then there would be a couple of mile long threads of people complaining that Apple copied from Photo Presenter. ;)

Just installed the update, works fine as I'm aware. Hopefully I won't be having to install another one in a few days.

iPhoto 4.0.3 caused serious problems for me. It couldn't find the library, so I quit and then reopened it. This time it upgraded the library and then just never left the "loading photos" screen.

I had to uninstall and reinstall iPhoto, but then it wouldn't recognize my pictures (which I could open in Preview). For this I had to move all the photos to one folder and import them from there (I know - strange).

Finally I had to recreate all my albums.

At least none of my pictures were lost (though they're all backed up).

Its shows up in software updater, but when I try to download it I get a not connected error even though I'm connected.

Its probably a good thing, it would probably kill my photo collection. I guess I'll wait a few more days and see if its up and running.

ok this whole update thing jacked my system, i made a backup of my photo library before hand incase it went array, which it did, then when i try to restore from that, i find that there are photos missing, mainly everything so far form august and some of june (which has been quite a bit), in the 2004 folder the months only go up to 7, i have no idea where my august photos went and wonder is there anyway to hunt them down, where might they have gone?

Go File/Find in the finder menu and modify your search accordingly.

doesnt work with me..

well.. just like 0.2, the 4.0.3 doesnt work with me because they both want 4.0.1 to be installed before they are installed in the system. and the main problem is, whenever I install 4.0.1 on my 4.0, all the transactions in the slideshow are gone, and there is nothing like "cube" or "mozaic" or anything else.. I guess I'll be waiting for a "major update" to update my iPhoto...

Problems upgrading?

From what I've read online, usually when people have weird, unexpected problems with updates, it's because they downloaded the program from someone or otherwise installed it in a manner that didn't correctly set the permissions originally. Food for thought. ;)

For what it's worth, the upgrade went fine for me. Went from 4.0.2 (thankfully, it looks like they made it close faster.)

The safe think is to download using software update. After installation to run repair permissions from the Utilities.

hmm, i find this really interesting. can you point me to where i can read more about this?? not that i don't believe you, but i see a alot of power in this if Apple decides to care about licensing and software copy protection.

thanks. -rik

I read it on Macintouch back when people were experiencing the generic application icon after upgrading to iPhoto 4.0.1:

For those people experiencing the generic iPhoto and failure to launch after updating iPhoto to 4.0.1, the problem is permissions. More importantly, this is caused by people having used some means to install 4.0 other than the iLife CD/DVD. When iPhoto is simply copied from another computer or, ahem, downloaded off the net, then the permissions don't get set up correctly inside the app. When the 4.0.1 updater runs, it changes ownership of some of the files back to root/admin, but doesn't otherwise change the access permissions. For files that were readable only by the owner, they are now locked out. The Apple Repair Permissions utility cannot help in these cases because, since iPhoto was never installed, there is no receipt in /Library/Receipts. A receipt is how Repair Permissions knows what to do to fix things.

Bottom line: Don't copy iPhoto from another computer to install it, but instead use the iLife CD/DVD. In all cases, that will set things up correctly for the 4.0.1 updater.

With my old school iMac DV 500Mhz / 512MB Ram, after clicking on the iPhoto icon, it opens in 4 seconds (including the loading of over 2000 photos) and closing iPhoto only takes less than 2 seconds!
Who says you need a 3Gig G5 nowadays?

Maybe the slower harddrive of the iBook explains some of that difference. On my 1Ghz TiBook the harddrive is really the slowest component.
