This is nowhere near a high-end speaker/amplifier combo...when you think high end...think a week's salary (for a non-student) for one component (the speakers), and another week to pay for the amp.

But for the average iPod owner, it is high end. That was more my point.

Look at the negative votes.... all because rumors, and rumors alone, gave people ideas that this particular event would bring something else?

iPod Hi-Fi would have been more "fun" without rumors to spoil it I think :)

I totally agree. I never got that hyped up about it in the first place and that's why I don't really care about the outcome. People just need to get over it. If you don't like the new product(s), no one is forcing you to buy them.

How Apple can launch this iPod hi fi without at least wi fi, does not add anything to the user experience of listing to music in the home. I don't care how good it sounds, we can all buy good hi fi compontents, and don't expect to go to apple for this.

Sure if they had created a good sound system, with a novel life changing piece of functionality that reduced cables, great, but I can plug my airport into my speakers, and as far as streaming from my Boombox to airport, what do apple expect me to do, buy another airport, and another boombox.

Well Steve, you have been my hero for years, but now you can go f**k yourself, I off to buy a PC, after all these years. Your arrogance has p***sed me right off.

Dave xxxx

Take it easy, dood. It's not like Jobs beat your wife with the HiFi, he just made a big deal about releasing it.

And don't forget the biggest reason to be a mac fan, OS X. It would take a whole lot more than one overblown media event to drive me back to windows.

Sure I wanted a video iPod ...

... but a $100 leather iPod sock is just as good!

Looking forward to staring at it, alllllll day.

Wow, there are a lot more pages than there used to be
when i checked an hour and a half ago?

Is everyone still saying "it is ugly, overpriced, and
won't sound that great playing mp3s anyway"???

How much power is this thing putting out? I tried
to look at the specs on Apple's website, but they
didn't give any peak or RMS watt numbers. I
highly doubt that it will sound better than my
Logitech 2.1 THX certified Z2300 speakers, which
I only paid $80 for. I have a Mac. I have frontrow.
I have a remote. I have this speaker setup already
that will deafen me at half volume AND sound good.

I just don't think this is going to appeal to a very
broad range of users. It will sell some, but not
a lot, like it sounds Apple is hoping for.

Didn't you get the memo? Apple doesnt release specs that it knows will dissappoint. Enough people will buy without that info. No battery info for the macbook....No RMS for this thing. It probably pumps out a whole 4 watts. Im pumped.

I think this does actually prove ONE THING !!!

Steve and his designers aren't really very smart, they are pretty ordinary people after all.

They only do REALLY good work when they are under the gun, it doesn't come naturally for them LIKE IT DOES ME  :D

Also I know I don't have to buy it, I'm just reflecting on what the public response will be as well.

Sorry - i didnt mean you in particular :D Just generally.
I dont know that the forums here have a wide enough cross-section to gauge the public response, but i see your point.

But I think taking an underwhelming product and showcasing it at a media event is opening yourself up to harsh criticism.
I agree - but as i said before, this year is about transition. In hindsight, my MacPad speculation was probally misplaced (or maybe slightly premature). 'New' products are a bonus this year - even if its not quite the bonus we were hoping for ;)

drb6 said:
then most of us would say we think its ugly and move on.
But then maybe that isnt what your looking for (style and feature wise).
Then maybe you arent the target market :D - Like we agreed, design is a matter of opinion!

This is why I have my mac to listen to music on. I won't waste any $$ on this product. Why not just save $50 and buy this...
And it's made by Bose, the leader in sound....

I wouldn't touch this tupperware box with a pole and wouldn't have bought one even if it was cutting edge. However I've been using Macs since 1988 and whatever product they release, I have to care about. When it's cool it justifies my Apple allegience when it's not it has a negative effect on Apple as a whole.

Today was a prime example. Instead of a cool iFi with integrated iPod compartment, LCD screen and wireless capability etc. the media made a special journey to see a speaker. Result? Apple share drops over 2 points and the iFi will likely join the Cube in the desert on finance day.

If you like Apple, you should care about every product they release. Success and innovation means you'll be using them longer into the future.

What Apple should have released were thin and stylish wireless/bluetooth speakers that included a plug-in module for an Airport Express. Then you could use AirTunes to stream iTunes to the Airport Express and then wirelessly into the speakers. Then add separate kits to mount the speakers in the wall/ceiling and/or outdoors.

Instead we get an overpriced copycat product. ::yawn:: Nothing to see, here. Move along.

Onkyo Setup instead

I was recently looking for something similar to this. I have an iPod 3g 30gig, and like to be able to use it at home.
I have a finished basement with a "home theater". Its a work in progress, but I have a nice receiver, speakers, decent TV, etc. Plus a good heavy mini-RCA cable to listen to my iPod.

However, upstairs in my living room, we wanted to be able to listen to iPods, the radio (mostly red sox games, but sometimes the news), the occasional CD, etc.
I looked at Bose (No Highs, No Lows, must be BOSE (tm)), Klipsch, JBL, etc.
I ended up with this:

cs210.gif

with their iPod dock http://www.onkyousa.com/dsa1.cfm

It was under $300 dollars, I can pick up the base with the iPod in it to select songs and the remote works on the iPod, pause, play, skip, fast forward, etc.

The speakers have a better frequency response than the HI-FI
Speaker Type - 2-Way, Bass Reflex
Woofer 4 13/16"" OMF Cone
Tweeter 7/8"" Balanced-Dome
Frequency Response 50 Hz-40 kHz
APPLE iPod HI-FI Frequency response: 53Hz to 16kHz ± 3 dB
Crossover Frequency 7.5 kHz
Sensitivity 83 dB/W/m
Max. Power 70 W
Nominal Impedance 5 ohm

AND it weighs 7.5 lbs.
If I ever hook it up to a TV, it will show the photos from an iPod.

Of Course, since it has multiple inputs, I could also hook up a tape deck or Airport Express as well as the iPod dock.
It does charge the iPod as well.

So, I get better sound, better stereo due to movable speakers, it weighs less, plays CDs and has a radio, and is $50 cheaper.

I am glad with what I got. I just don't see any advantages to the HI-FI, unless you like black and white. In which case you can paint the stereo!

I have the Bose SoundDock...got it a few months ago. I'll probably get one of these within the next year. I think this is a good market for them to go at, because they probably make massive profits from each unit sold and they will be able to create promotions easily: they can bundle this with an ipod and give the buyer a $50 discount, or they could give a free ipod shuffle to someone who buys this with an ipod.

Next big thing: stackable HiFis. you'll be able to make an entire wall out of these things....

Did you declare Bose the "leader in sound" or is that a title they gave themselves?

Jeez I told you not to get excited!

we were told "fun" - not "mind blowing - Apple rocks the world" - they got to save the really cool stuff for the BIRTHDAY PARTY !

MacMini's are cool though - good to see GB Ethernet on them . . . that alone will sell thousands to the pro audio world looking for headless Logic Pro node machines.

As for the rest - yeah it's better than socks, but not by much. Whatever you all think of the HiFi thing it'll sell to those who don't know **** about audio - which is most people.

Take a look at the singles charts . . . I rest my case!

apple speakers a first?

I have a question: besides the internal speakers in iMacs, have there been any apple-branded speakers in recent memory? Ever?

Like a lot of people, I am super-disappointed with today's releases, but it's not like Apple hyped it up like it was going to be ushering in the new world order today (I've still got my fingers crossed for April 1, though!).

But it's interesting - it looks like Apple is firmly planting a foot in the consumer electronics arena. Now that they're selling music players and stereos, an iPhone doesn't seem like such a stretch of the imagination, does it?

Am I the only one?

I don't think this system is half bad. Clearly, Apple is targeting Bose and I for one think the system looks a lot better than the Bose. I like the clean design, with form following function. Of course, the main thing is how this sucker sounds, and we won't know the answer to that for a while yet. I doubt I'll buy it, but I wouldn't have bought the Bose either.

I feel Apple was grasping at straws on this one... just like the $99 leather case for the iPods...

Agreed. This thing looks like a center channel speaker with a ipod dock.

Too big. Too blocky. Too ugly. Too much $$$.

Wait maybe this is the 21 st century "ghettoblaster". I could take it with me to the corner and do my breakdancing like in Electric Boogaloo 2 !!

Sad, disappointing announcements today.

True...350 is a small price in the market of HiFidelity. Speaker ratings are not everything. Speaker placement is every bit as important to an audiophile.

I think a clear sound is more important than true stereo-feeling. But probably you even will be able to just attach a second iPod HiFi to have stereo?

350 is as much as it is worth spending on a sound-system playing 128AAC. Would be perfectly suited for me, if it sounds good.

This should have been an integrated amp (100 watts each channel) with AM/FM tuner and DVD/CD player that ipods can plug into (and the ipod should be completely submersible so that it won't fall out when carrying--spring loaded). It should have 7.1 speaker and stereo speaker outs and several video outs. It should have had a bunch of inputs. It should have had optional snap on speakers for portability. It should have supported vPOD playing on your TV. It should have been the center of the home A/V--music system--but also portable. And all that for $499 (it's possible), portable stereo speakers for $59. This is so not hifi--look at the frequency response on the speakers!

Interesting idea, but WHAT a lost effort. Oh, well....on to v.2

Yeah, I was thinking it would be something like that. Like an Airport Express with speakers and a screen.

umm.....thats sorta what it is. you can attach it to an airport express to play music, and the ipods your screen. first reaction to the new products was WTF  OMG  **** Apple!!! wheres my widescreen ipod! then i had a look at the website and some of the posts here and its actually very good. too expensive though IMHO. cant find this 99$ case of dreams lol  . the mac mini thing looks amazing, but I'm confused as to how useful this would actually be. can it record off of your tv? that would be cool. tivo / sky+ killer.
