Have you heard about Bose might be coming out with an Ipod rival?

http://www.cooltechzone.com/Special...:_Planning_an_Apple_iPod_Rival?_200602272201/

This was also reported by MacNN. Hmmm... If this is true, Bose would surely discontinue the Soundock for the Ipod an make room for their product. Could this have been the driving factor for Apple to release the Ipod Hifi? If you ask me, maybe. This remains to be seen.

Maybe Apple should consider having a telethon where, for every $100 donated, you get a FREE leather iPod sock.

I think it would go over better.

I don't think this system is half bad. Clearly, Apple is targeting Bose and I for one think the system looks a lot better than the Bose. I like the clean design, with form following function. Of course, the main thing is how this sucker sounds, and we won't know the answer to that for a while yet. I doubt I'll buy it, but I wouldn't have bought the Bose either.
I think it looks fine - a good piece of european looking minimalist design. No idea what it sounds like yet of course. I'd give it house room.

I have a question: besides the internal speakers in iMacs, have there been any apple-branded speakers in recent memory? Ever?

Like a lot of people, I am super-disappointed with today's releases, but it's not like Apple hyped it up like it was going to be ushering in the new world order today (I've still got my fingers crossed for April 1, though!).

But it's interesting - it looks like Apple is firmly planting a foot in the consumer electronics arena. Now that they're selling music players and stereos, an iPhone doesn't seem like such a stretch of the imagination, does it?

Yes Apple made speakers for the G4 Cube ;)

I had a set of Apple-branded speakers with my Quadra 900. Is that recent enough? I also had an Apple-branded 300 baud modem for my Apple IIgs. ;)

It ALL COMES DOWN TO 128KBS people! I don't care if it has a digital in/out, it is sampled at this bitrate!

How shotty...

Aaack?!?

from Apple Website
"Environmental requirements [for iPod Hi-Fi]
Operating temperature: 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C)
Nonoperating temperature: — 4° to 113° F ( — 20° to 45° C)
Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m)"

What happens when the temp goes above 113° F? Does it melt? I live in CO without AC. Not that it gets this warm often but if I left it in the car?? Or decided to sit out by the pool in Phoenix?

I guess I'll wait and see some of the reviews.

it's only a clean design when you don't have an iPod sticking out of it waiting to be knocked off. it's smaller size makes it slightly less ridiculous than the iCrates put out like Geneva but no less badly integrated.

If I velcro my iPod Dock on top of my center channel speaker I've jus tmade the iFi.

At least the JBL system is smaller and doesn't look as stupid.

One of the best looking systems I've seen for products which just stick the dock on top is by Monitor. but even that looks like a 90s PC speaker system.

The only area the iFi scores is in portability. Even that is a bit weak when it weighs 17lbs.

underwhelming

too expensive for my taste id rather have another ipod. and 99$!!!! for a leather case, give me a break... it had better be like leopard skin :D leather for them to be charging that much.

This is why I have my mac to listen to music on. I won't waste any $$ on this product. Why not just save $50 and buy this...
And it's made by Bose, the leader in sound....

I am sure this is NOT audiophile quality and neither is the Bose, but both will probably sound about the same. The Apple product will probably have more bass, but I would put my money on the Bose system to have more clarity.

If you are going for style however, the Bose system is much more attractive. The Bose Sound Dock actually looks like something Apple would have made this box does not.

I cannot believe how many people in this post have said something similar...

You are definately a fan of the wrong companies products if you are expecting anything but expensive.

That being said, I just got my shipment confirmation email form Apple, Shipping tomorrow, arriving on Friday. :)

how fast can it come off the market... obviously no one likes it.... what do you think they'll do?

BTW the Bose and JBL and many other manufacturers of this type of product are selling them very well.

And I have not seen a portable design from any other company, (not saying there aren't, so don't flame me if there is)

Don't you get it folks?

This was not supposed to be a major product launch. All of this stuff was supposed to be at Macworld. If you don't believe me, watch the Macworld keynote again and pay attention to how "stretched" it was. Jobs spent far too much time messing around with iLife. Compare his demo with previous iLife demos. The obvious conclusion is that, as has been reported, products that were not quite ready were removed from the Macworld keynote.

Now... the new mac minis are cool. How anyone could complain about such an obvious buff to the product line is beyond me. They're good and I'm considering buying one for my wife.

As for the boombox. You may not like it, but there is a reason that Apple has decided to release this product -- they know something the rest of us don't. If you go into any Apple store, you will see a bunch of boombox-like peripherals for the iPod. I always thought that they were a little lame, and I wondered if anyone really bought them.

I'm willing to bet with 100% certainty that these things have been selling far better than anyone, including Apple, expected. And who else is in a better position to know this than a company that owns stores that sells iPods along with all the other iPod stuff? I'm guessing that Apple looked over sales about a year ago and noticed that a lot of people were walking out of their stores with boombox peripherals. With Apple's superior ability to integrate such devices with iPods, they'd have been idiots not to want to get in on such a high priced item.

Look... I don't think Apple really gives a **** about making cheap iPod peripherals, because there isn't really any money in it. As far as cheap iPod stuff goes, they've made some socks... minor stuff for amusement that required no R&D.

But a $300 boombox costs as much as an iPod. If I owned Apple, there is no way I'd want to see a lot of people walking out of my store with someone else's $300 peripheral when I could make a better one myself.

I'm guessing that this one was a no brainer for the marketing department.

Well if there is any company that could take on the iPod it would be Bose. They have never went into this market, but they know style. There is no one that would argue that the Lifestyle 48 with the Jewel Cube speakers is not one of the most stylish consumer electronics on the market. I guess it will all come down to what their price will be and how user friendly the Bose player will be. The rest of their products are very user friendly however so that is why I think if any company could make an MP3 player that could match an iPod it would be Bose.

i don't like how it has the iPod name, like its part of the iPod line up

When it says choices an iPod, the Hi-Fi is an option as a choice for your iPod, but you need an iPod to use ut

I don't like how MOST of these type of products have the iPod sticking out of the top like a damn flag. The iPod Hi-Fi does this. So does that iHome thing.

The IM7, which incorporates the iPod into the body of the speakers, is aesthetically more pleasing to me.

Yeah, but for just iPod that's fine. If it was a complete A/V center with DVD/CD drive you could get great music out it with hard media when you wanted it.
