Fad:
an intense and widely shared enthusiasm for something that is short-lived and without basis in the object's qualities.

It's not short-lived.
It's because of its qualities above all else (e.g. video content)

So it's not really a fad.

Yeah... just a fad. like the wax cylinder was a fad, and those old 78s, and the 45s and vinyl LPs, the cassette tapes and CDs. The iPod has created a genre and become a generic name like Hoover and Kodak and Walkman. It's succeeded in its own terms, and succeeded spectacularly.

I agree. I have actually become quite bored with my iPod. The design is no longer stimulating, or revolutionary, and the interface is long overdue for an overhaul. Part of me actually prefers the customizable interface of the Zune to the iPod.

Before I picked up a 10gb Second Gen iPod, I was all about MiniDisc. Format longevity/popularity aside, MiniDisc players and recorders were stylish, and came in dozens of different styles and colors. My favorite portable audio player, to date, is my MZ-R90. The design of that unit is so unique, it really hasn't been replicated since. While the iPod may be "iconic", like a Porsche 911, employing an "evolutionary" design, it will never quite be the Lamborghini Countach of DAPs.

The iPod has become somewhat iconic for the current generation. The so called "iGeneration" which was born after the internet. The reason why the iPod has reached such a level is not because of its "amazing interface" or "better technology" or "blah blah marketing here and there to convince you", but it is because of iTunes. Without iTunes, the iPod is nothing. Even though the current iPod is really dated these days, iTunes is still the best solution for most consumers and will continue to be, I mean who uses WM or Winamp anymore?

thank you jesus

and wang, i totally agree, i wish itunes could sync to zune. windows media player is a joke.

I have tons of movies and tv shows that I didn't buy from iTunes that I can put on my iPod.

Let me rephrase this.

Legally, without having to use specialty obscure applications to rip copy-protected DVDs.

You have three options; iTunes, BitTorrent (illegal), or rip a DVD (not easy on Windows and questionable legality).

Zune owners only have the latter two, and the casual user can't do that. Plus waiting a week for a movie to download off BitTorrent is often inconvenient compared to half an hour for iTunes.

What are you - Bush's DMCA Police?

Some of us don't believe that using your own content that you paid for is wrong and believe that trying to prevent that honest, copyright law protected use is criminal.

No; my point is I'm talking about stuff mom, pop, and little billy can use.

Mom and pop don't know how to use BitTorrent or how to rip an encrypted DVD and re-encode it in WMV.

Rubik's Cube was a fad. I don't think a portable music device is a fad. I would not call the original Walkman a fad. Technology just changed the way we do it but people are still carrying their music around in something with headphones attached. If this was the case everything that we don't use anymore would be a fad. DVD's, 8-tracks, cassettes are not fads either. They were the technology of their time. However, you don't see too many people anymore solving six sided colored cubes on the bus. Honey....is that a hoop skirt your wearing? :D

seriously, cell phones too. cell phones are gonna start dying down though as soon as people start realizing that their house line has vastly superior sound quality. i mean think about it. your house phone is like 20 bucks a month and i can call anyone crystal clear, there are no contracts whatsoever. im gonna sell my iphone as soon as they make my house phone mac compatible.

I just got rid of my land line this year. I have free long distance, cell to cell
roaming, etc. so no more land line for me.

Wow, you guys did so not read the Cnet review i posted on page one...

you know that links to a youtube video right?

i dont see how anything can replace MP3 players, my friend and i were talking about this the other day, they can only get smaller and hold more, whats there to step up to? the only possible thing would be to have it integrated into your head so it plays music directly into your skull, face it everyone will always want to have their music with them some how, unless music in general goes out of style, which, i doubt will happen like ever... thats like saying a wrist watch is a fad

I didn't think anything could get lamer than the OP's post...guess I was wrong.

How does all that relate to the iPod being a fad. Which, by the way, is your opinion that you are entitled to...no matter how wrong you are.

It's you're. The word is you're.

That's right because CNet clearly is the authority on all things fad.

I think you're wrong. I think something will replace the iPod...another iPod. Do a search buddy for all the lame threads on every Mac board that starts with OMG IPOD KILLER! You too will be amazed at how many iPod killers there are out there.

Enjoy your Zune buddy.

I find your post to be so dead on, it's hard to describe; it's so beautiful it brings a tear to my eye.

OP, where did you get the idea that music was a fad? If you think about it, an iPod is simply a music delivery system. Core components like harddrives, touchscreens, and click wheels may change over time, but there will always be a device to deliver music to listeners. The iPod is going to be able to do that for quite some time because of Apple's continuing innovation and Microsoft's uncanny ability to produce ugly products.

The difference is that the iPod is adaptable. If something be=igger comes out they have the resources and the fan base to modify itself to match or beat the opponent. I'm sure it will get replaced at somepoint. Not for a long time though!
What could replace it, save for bio technology?:p
