But why get a 2GB nano when you can get a 4GB nano for X more? And why get a 4GB nano when you can get a 30GB iPod video for X more, and a better cost/MB ratio?

I think we've had this discussion before....

Well I certainly wouldnt consider a 1GB model.

I still think the shuffle works in the lineup - it's a completely different kind of player.

Same here, even now I would rather get another 1GB Shuffle than 1GB Nano.
However, Nano is now priced low enough for impulse purchases so that may be the reason for new 1GB model.

I don't think that the 1GB shuffle will last much longer. But there may still be a market for the 512MB, as a really cheap music player/flashdrive.

In Australia ...
Shuffle 512MB $99
Shuffle 1GB $149
nano 1GB $219

That Shuffle 512MB pricing is very aggressive for a tier 1 brand here.

the one gig shuffle is still up

i guess they have to get rid of supply

The 512MB is only $69? Apple may very well want an entry-level, loss-leader type player, but I can't imagine the shuffle will be around at the next iPod refresh. It's looks like an antique compared to the light-and-fluffy, full-color iPod and nano.

I don't recall that Apple has ever had two different players with the same capacity at the same time like the 1GB nano and 1GB shuffle.

It's just odd that Apple introduced a lower memory model to an established iPod line. I think this is the first time they have ever done that.

I think it's also the first time that two different iPod lines have had the same storage at the same time (1GB on both Shuffle and Nano now). I always felt that there was a size/storage tradeoff. Yeah 1GB isn't much but you put up with it because the shuffle is the easiest to carry. Sure you would like 60GB but the iPod is just too big so you put up with the 4GB of the Nano.

I mean imagine if Apple release a new video iPod that crosses the lines in the same way... that would mean a 4GB video iPod to match the storage on the 4GB Nano. Even if it was a lot cheaper can you see many people buying it?

Similarly, I don't see many people choosing the 1GB Nano. If the nano is too big then fine you get the 1GB shuffle to save space. However, if the Nano is an acceptable size then why would you accept it having the same constrained storage of the smaller shuffle? Surely if you are stepping up in size you would expect a step up in storage.

Ohh I want one so badly! I have a 4GB iPod Mini which works perfectly fine for me, but for £100 (Educational Discount) I could get a Nano...hmmm.

I musn't buy one, I have bought too much stuff in too little time lately

Song bit rate...

When the 1GB iPod Nano says it holds 240 songs, what they of encoding / bit rate are they assuming? I listen to a lot of talk stuff (comedy CDs, stuff I've recorded off the radio, ect...) and That contant sounds very good at a lower bit rate than music does. i was trying to figure out how much content I could actually fit.

I think a 1GB nano makes sense. It comes in at a very nice price point especially with the EDU discount. $129 USD is very nice and I think I will buy one to take to the gym and for Jogging around the neighborhood. I already own a 60GB video ipod but I always wanted something smaller and more durable to tote around when doing active things. I considered a nano but did not want to sacrifice the screen and features.

They're assuming bit rate of 128 and probably 3"-4" in length

Is sad how some people just don't learn and keep spouting the same nonsense hoping one day it will be genius. News to you people...it never will be genius.

This whole music/price ratio argument has zero bearing on buyers. It had no impact on the iPod mini and none on the original nanos. So stop making this argument. It doesn't work.

What is important is price point, price point, price point. If someone only can afford a $149 player, it doesn't really matter if the $199 player is better. And if someone only ever listens to 5-6 albums at any given time, then 2GB is overkill. Why would they want to spend an extra $50 for GB of RAM they'll never use?

This new price point will all but seal the iPods complete domination of the market. There is no reason to buy any other player now since their is truly an iPod for every budget.

If there is anything disappointing with the news of the 1GB player it's that there probably won't be a 6 or 8GB nano anytime soon.

Same same here. I enjoy my Shuffle but I wish it held more songs. IGB is not really enough :) I will probably get a Nano later this year.

I think the Shuffle still has it's place in Apple's iPod lineup,
but I would love to see Apple release a 6 or 8GB Nano this June and
lower the price of the 1GB and 4GB and discountinue the 2gb.
Sort of like this:

512 Shuffle $69
1GB Nano $99
4GB Nano $199
8GB Nano $249

A 6 or 8GB Nano would have been far more welcome than a 1GB. Hardly seems there is much point having a screen and photo viewing support for a measley 1GB.

Well, some people aren't loaded with cash as many on this board appear to be! I'll be getting a 1gb nano soon. It's in my price range and maybe 50 bucks isn't a lot to you but it is to me.

The iPod photo models, I suppose, where they replaced the 40GB model with 30GB and then 20GB.

Also, for a time, they did have the 40GB iPod photo on sale alongside the monochrome 40GB iPod.

Excellent.

I'm disappointed that the shuffle hasn't been entirely discontinued (or at least reduced to only a 512MB version) as I genuinely think it's the worst piece of Apple hardware since Jobs' return. But that there's finally a £100-ish iPod which allows basic options such as easily selecting what song you want to listen to is great.

It also puts into perspective a bit the ridiculous prices for some of the accessories. You can get an iPod nano 1GB for £109, yet to equip it with FM radio reception costs £35. Ridiculous.

I think a $149 iPod nano will definitely attract some of the people who thought that iPods were too expensive. Sure, 1gb isn't much, but the nano is such an awesome device that $149 at any capacity is a deal.

Samsung: "Hi Steve, sorry we can not deliver all that 2GB flash memory"
Steve: "%@$!@!"
Samsung: "But we can give you a great deal on 1GB"
Steve: "Well, Valentine day is coming ...Send those 1GB ..."

If Apple had introduced a 6GB Nano today then it's likely they would have dropped the price of the 2GB down to around where they have the 1GB now. So it's likely we'd have the same prices but with a more sensible, at least to me, line up.

Oh well, guess Apple really want to take advantage of Valentine's buying.

Well, I just bit the bullet and bought one. My iPod Mini was broken, and I rarely used over 256MB of space (all I listen to are podcasts), so this wqas great for me. I hope that it gets here soon.

By the way, I got it for $129 with my student discount...very good price no matter how you look at it.
