Excellent.

I'm disappointed that the shuffle hasn't been entirely discontinued (or at least reduced to only a 512MB version) as I genuinely think it's the worst piece of Apple hardware since Jobs' return.

I never liked the design of it or the idea that it didn't have a display at all. True to form, Apple marketed it as 'Look! No display!' But mostly I don't like the stick-of-gum form factor. Purely from an aesthetics perspective, something more like a coin shape in several colors and marketed as an iPod sport would have been better.

You can always get iPod Fly. It is in the same section as new Mac Mini Media Center Edition. :)

However, I like Shuffle better.

£49 for a 512MB Shuffle looks like a very nice present.

I was looking at them with my girlfriend over the weekend, and I was saying that the price would come down soon so it would be best to wait, as the Shuffles weren't good value at £69. This new price brings the Shuffle back into competitive pricing. The 1GB nano is very competitive for the features - colour screen, photos, design. Compare it to a high end Sony flash player and laugh.

I wonder when Tesco will reflect the price change...

The UK store is up and there is a 1GB Nano. Would anyone really buy a 1GB Nano?

Yes. It definitely looks much nicer than the Shuffle. You can get an inscription, which is nice for a present. If you buy things for looks - and many people do - you get better looks, and it is cheaper than the 2 GB or 4 GB Nano, which don't look any different. If you buy for listening to music, then either the Shuffle or a bigger Nano might be the better choice.

Well, for me, I love the shuffle -- design and all. It is the perfect second iPod. I can load a few songs on it and workout without worrying about dropping it. Slips in the pocket, never would use the display if it had one. Since I play in a band, I can load the new songs to learn and listen over and over to them -- perfect. Apparently it works for lots of folks... And at $69, even our drummer can afford one!! :)

The shuffle isn't going anywhere. There was a reason why Apple release the shuffle in the first place. Not everyone wants to shell out 3 figures on an MP3 player.

Still overpriced, but you are paying for the name and not the product.

And I am sure you will substantiate this claim by posting links to players that offer better value for the money. Maybe even links to players that offer the same value for the money.

Auto-transcoding down to 128kbps?

One of the great options that iTunes gives you with the Shuffle is to automatically convert your music to 128kbps as you move it to the Shuffle. It lets me keep my music in lossless in iTunes and I fit 5X more information on my Shuffle than I would otherwise.

So will this option be available on the 1GB nano? If so, it would fit as much for me as the larger Nano. Sure the quality isn't as good at 128, but I don't care when I'm commuting.

i am a die hard shuffle fan, and if they actually discontinue the shuffle i want to buy a few of them for if/when my current one gets damaged or lost. i think they are great, i use them on a daily basis for listening to tunes as well as a flash drive. i also love that they are ultra durable!! so i hope they dont get discontinued, though it does seem very odd to have a 1GB nano and a 1GB shuffle. do the nanos offer the autofill option that the shuffles do? and i wonder if there is a mini-dock that could plug a nano directly in, as if it were a shuffle. . . . if so id probably buy a nano, simply because they look cooler! (though i would be a little nervous about the durability)

Its called Cornering the Market. They have one that fits everyone's lifestyle and budget now. I certainly am happy about this. I think iPods are great.

Why are people complaining about more choices? I guess because the internet has become a place for babies to cry and opinions to be "heard".

For those of you who miss the old days with the pricing and such, you can still get a 512MB iPod Shuffle Refurb for $79 (as of 9:43AM ET). That's right, $10 more than a non-refurb.

I pitty the fool.

When the 1GB iPod Nano says it holds 240 songs, what they of encoding / bit rate are they assuming? I listen to a lot of talk stuff (comedy CDs, stuff I've recorded off the radio, ect...) and That contant sounds very good at a lower bit rate than music does. i was trying to figure out how much content I could actually fit.

Four minutes at 128 KBit/second.

Actually, 240 songs of four minutes at 128 KBit per second is 960,000,000 bytes which is substantially less than one Gigabyte, but you'd have to add some space for album art etc. etc.

If Sony sold them, they would hold about 13,000 songs :)

I think the shuffles would be for people that just want to listen to music and the nano would be for people that would also like to store pictures.

At the gym, most of the people have shuffles and on the train people have some sort of iPod.

So I guess it depends on your lifestyle.

I think the other player manufacturers are pretty scummy to advertise song capacities with 64kbps WMA. They never point it out either. At least Apple do.

Looking at dabs.com, I noticed that Sony's 256MB player costs £5 more than the 512MB Shuffle now, although the 512MB player is only £15 more (or only £5 less than the 1GB Shuffle).

Must... not... buy... black nano....

Don't... really... need... another... iPod...

What's this? Free shipping? :)

Well, the 1GB Shuffle is quite cheap now, and I might buy one and use it mostly as a flash drive, not music player. I think there isn't many 1GB USB drives as cheap as Shuffle?

AAAAARRRGH

I bought my iPod Shuffle LAST TUESDAY EVENING!

So in less than a week the price has dropped by £20. grrrr.

Just called up the shop and they don't offer the 14-day price difference refund thing that I thought Apple offered. bastards

oh well, just one of those things...

not at all interested in the 1GB nano though anyway.

I think this is a great move. My nephew got a 512MB Shuffle for his b-day in November.....as soon as he opened it my other nephew wanted one, but he is 3 years younger and my sister didn't want to spend $100 on that for him. Now he'll most likely get one for his upcoming b-day.
My sister has wanted a new iPod ever since her 1G 5GB iPod's hard drive failed about a year-and-a-half-ago, but didn't want to spend $200 (or more) on an iPod (priorities with her kids) and didn't want an iPod without a screen. The 1GB Nano is the perfect price point for her at $149.
They've been having computer problems lately and will probably get a new one fairly soon. Once they all have iPods I believe it will be easy for me to convince them to pick up a Mac Mini when they decide to buy a new computer. They know how great my computers are and how easily they work with my iPods, so that will help give them the nudge to switch.

Didn't see this anywhere else, but iTunes also launched Billion Song countdown to win free iPod Nanos (Probably the 1GB kind!) :)

Edit: Didn't scroll far enough... sorry

The 1Gig iPod shuffle is the perfect product for me. I need something durable for daily use: both of my 10Gig 1rst Gen. and 40Gig 3rd Gen iPods have died from hard drive failure after being used daily for ~2 years. Hopefully I can find a cheap way to repair those eventually, but for now I want something that can withstand a beating. I don't really need a screen because I normally make a playlist containing a few albums that I want to hear for that day, and change it out after I've listened. I'm debating whether 50$ for a color screen is worth it... I'm leaning to the shuffle for its durable design and cheap pricepoint.

I'm glad the prices just dropped cause my 10gig just stopped working last week again...

Not sure where you live, but in the U.S. a 1GB USB flash drive can be had for as little as $50 when on sale. Check Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Staples, Fry's/Outpost, etc.

You might even be able to find a good deal online somewhere.

You can actually get a 1GB flash drive (USB) for like $40 now, if you look around online.

Of course, those don't play music.

It was front page news like 5 hours ago and it clearly states that the prizes are 4GB nanos.

Edit: Saw your edit.
