Excellent.

I'm disappointed that the shuffle hasn't been entirely discontinued (or at least reduced to only a 512MB version) as I genuinely think it's the worst piece of Apple hardware since Jobs' return. But that there's finally a £100-ish iPod which allows basic options such as easily selecting what song you want to listen to is great.

It also puts into perspective a bit the ridiculous prices for some of the accessories. You can get an iPod nano 1GB for £109, yet to equip it with FM radio reception costs £35. Ridiculous.
I couldnt agree with you more. The shuffle sucks. Never liked it, never will  I see it being discontinued in a few more months.

I also see myself buying a 1GB nano, soon as they hit the $100 price point. And now the wait... :p

I think the other player manufacturers are pretty scummy to advertise song capacities with 64kbps WMA. They never point it out either. At least Apple do.

Looking at dabs.com, I noticed that Sony's 256MB player costs £5 more than the 512MB Shuffle now, although the 512MB player is only £15 more (or only £5 less than the 1GB Shuffle).

Sony is worse than that. They have advertised song capacities with 48KBit/second Atrac. That's how they got 13,000 song capacity out of a 20GB player, when Apple advertised the same size with 5,000 songs only.

And pricewise, Apple seems to be absolutely cornering the market. On Saturday, I noticed that my local supermarket was selling MP3 players, and I thought they are not much cheaper than a Shuffle, why not buy the real thing? If I go back there this weekend, I'd bet the Shuffle actually beats them on price. And with the Shuffle, you know it will work.

I applaud Apple for this move. This will definitely cement their 70-80% market share in the portable music player market.

Many many comments in this thread so far expressed surprise that the Nano is going down into Shuffle's capacity territory instead of going in the other direction. Well, if you think about it it actually makes a lot of sense. The 512 MB Shuffle is now just a cheap teaser and is well within the price range of even the lowest end of the portable player market, yet it is an Apple iPod (do not underestimate the pliability of ordinary people to the iPod craze). Then the two 1GB models - I don't think the bigger Shuffle is going away yet. $99 for a 1GB USB thumb drive with MP3 player capabilities is not that much (it is not cheap, but it is not way overpriced either). And many people (me included) buy Shuffles just for that - USB drive first, listening to a couple of songs on the go or at the gym second. But there are also many people, who want a "real" iPod, with a screen and a click wheel and everything. Now they can get one for just $20 more than the old price of the 1GB Shuffle (and coincidentally at the same price as other "full featured" (i.e. with display) portable flash players like Walkman Core NW-E407 form Sony  ).

This is brilliant marketing at work and, as I said, I applaud Apple for that. Certainly, future iterations of the Nano will get higher capacity so that they can fill the 26GB gap, but for the time being this is simply the greatest move.

BTW did you notice the ad/page for the new Moto SLVR with iTunes on the iPod + iTunes page of apple.com. What do you think about that?

If Sony sold them, they would hold about 13,000 songs :)
umm... yea, I totally bit into that MiniDisc ATRAC thing and now I have content that sound like crap because I converted it into ATRAC+ and didnt keep the original WAV files. Yes, i am a moron. I have seen the error of my ways. I am an Apple / AAC fan now.

You can actually get a 1GB flash drive (USB) for like $40 now, if you look around online.

Of course, those don't play music.
Yup. I'm so tempted to get one for my boyfriend! He's been needing a USB flash drive and he's stubbornly anti-iPod. Maybe he won't even notice that it's an iPod. :p

HaHa..good point. Though the Apple stock holders may have to go with the cheap nano now that the stock has taken a bit of a hit :p

1 gig nano

i woudl have liked to see a price point of 99 for this and a drop of the shuffle to 49 and 69, but its okay i cant complain. they are better covering thier whole range of ipods.

One of the great options that iTunes gives you with the Shuffle is to automatically convert your music to 128kbps as you move it to the Shuffle. It lets me keep my music in lossless in iTunes and I fit 5X more information on my Shuffle than I would otherwise.

So will this option be available on the 1GB nano? If so, it would fit as much for me as the larger Nano. Sure the quality isn't as good at 128, but I don't care when I'm commuting.

If you ask me, we need this option for ALL iPods, including a user setting for the bitrate (lossless for my Mac mini, 128kbps for my 10GB iPod and 64kbps for my 4GB iPod nano).

Note: I'm 33. Give me a break on the "64kbps sounds like crap" comments. At least with AAC 64kbps is still 44KHz (unlike MP3 which drops to 22KHz at 64kbps).

Well Put

Well, some people aren't loaded with cash as many on this board appear to be! I'll be getting a 1gb nano soon. It's in my price range and maybe 50 bucks isn't a lot to you but it is to me.

We all seem to forget that we all have different budgets and concepts of how much to pay and what to pay for.

The new 1G Nano is priced for a different target market. We can all second guess Apple as much as we like, and it seems a lot of us do no matter what comes out of the Apple machine - but the products are selling, and selling well.

I don't care if 5 posters say 'I will not under any circumstance buy one of those...blah...blah...blah' because you are not the target market, and there are loads more people who will buy one - remember what a lot of people said about the iPod mini when it came out? - 'I will not under any circumstance buy one of those...blah...blah...blah' well, it was the first iPod model to sel a million units if memory serves,

Anyway, sorry for the rant and well done Apple for pricing a premier product for an even larger market. I have a 4G Nano (and a schuffle and an iPod photo) but I know a couple of people who will probably be able to justify the spend on a new 1Gig-er.

Funny.

I just told my wife last night "I'd like a shuffle for running, but I can't justify the price on the 512 MB models."

The Apple gods are kind and loving gods. Off to the store to blow the last of my birthday money. :D

EDIT: Done and done. Got a 512 MB shuffle now too. :D

Well, the 1GB Shuffle is quite cheap now, and I might buy one and use it mostly as a flash drive, not music player. I think there isn't many 1GB USB drives as cheap as Shuffle?

USB drives prices have dropped quite a lot as of late. The iPod shuffle, even with its new price, is still a lot more expensive than regular (non-music player) USB drives.

While a Nano @ 1GB seems a bit odd, I'm happy with the way they priced it and then lowered the price of the Shuffles. Good move!
It does seem odd. To me, it's Apple's way of acknowledging that people really want screens on their players and the ability to choose what they listen to.

They're assuming bit rate of 128 and probably 3"-4" in length

What is 3-4 inches in length? I wouldn't go around addmiting to that:eek:

jruc4871 said:
LOL, sorry - it's early. that should have said 3 to 4 minutes

Oh, you mean each song 3-4 MINUTES...well, that is something you can admit too:)

Seeing AAPL go down by the second, I wouldn't be so sure about that. ;)

I mean, from 85$US down to 68$US in a month is a bit scary.

And now, Apple lowers the price of the iPod shuffle, releases a 1GB iPod nano, and the stock goes even further down?

Silly traders... AAPL is for users!

$85, where the hell have you been looking

$179.00 for the 1Gig Nano is quite a lot. I'm glad Apple still offer the Shuffle.

Wonder if we'll see a 512MB Nano?!

EDIT: I am in no doubt the 1gig Nano will sell well regardless.

I don't think the shuffle is going anywhere. It is an awesome Swiss Army Knife mp3 player.

I've run a bunch of marathons, trained hundreds of miles and spent countless hours at the gym with mine. The nano would be dead by now.

Cancelled my nano order. I still think it's too flimsy.
