This is great. I'm sure I'll sell a TON of them. 2GB nanos fly out of the store already, this will make it even better.

Now if they can only get ALL of the iPods to stop scratching so darn easily. Even my iPod (4G, 20GB) looks bad. It's really irritating, but I still love it anyway. ;)

I've seen some nanos that look really bad. It disappoints me... but most people buy the Belkin cases for them anyway.

I just got my first iPod too--a 1GB Shuffle. I had been waiting for the updates to happen, and was waiting for a higher capacity Nano (8 GB) or some kind of improvement to the iPod (smaller size would be great, along with bluetooth to control music from a Mac hooked up to a stereo system) which would hold all my music. Still patiently waiting...

Funny...

I'm not sure if someone else has noticed this, but the refurb shuffle is $79, still. Hope no one buys one of those in the next few days.

this is one of those things that temps you to get a second iPod for just whenever... or maybe one as a gift

I'm disappointed that the shuffle hasn't been entirely discontinued (or at least reduced to only a 512MB version) as I genuinely think it's the worst piece of Apple hardware since Jobs' return.
Personally, I would disagree with you.

I have a 1GB Shuffle and love it.

And I would not get a 1GB Nano instead. I like the Shuffles simplicity and dual use as a memory stick.

I'm seriously considering the 1 GB Nano. I really can't think of 200 songs that I would want with me all the time, and with school, I don't spend much time away from my 12" PB, which obviously holds all of my music. I think these smaller capacity players are great for people who just want something to take with them and hold their current favorite songs/albums and podcasts. I honestly don't think I'd have a need for anything more.

I have to agree with others on this forum that I was looking for a 1GB Shuffle with an OLED, not an 1GB Nano,

I do not like the Nano for the very reason that it scratches easy and I do not want to add size of a case to it.

Well I guess its going to be the 1GB Shuffle for me, as the price is attractive for a flash/mp3 device. Plus its just rugged enough to be thrown around and not worry. :)

1GB Shuffle, ordered. ;)

How would the nano be dead?

I don't think it is that flimsy. More fool the person that puts it in their back pocket and sits on it!

This is the whole point of the shuffle you CAN sit on it! I know this because i have sat on mine (though i try not to make it a regular thing)

I love the shuffle because it's durability and utility is whats makes it great. I use about 700MB of my shuffle for music and the rest for flash drive. I take it to work i take it running i can take it everywhere and not worry about keeping it wraped in cotten wool because i might forget that my keys were in the same pocket as my iPod.

Yes maybe it's not as chic, cute, sexy, or some other buzz word that marketing types use for other apple products. I think this is the main reason some apple fanatics give the shuffle a hard time...

cause maybe it's not as cool as it's other siblings but it gets the job done and it'll survive more bumps and knocks then any other iPod. Plus if you do somehow manage to break it you can buy another with out breaking the bank.

I hope the shuffle lives for awhile yet cause it's a very useful tool :)

The shuffle sucks. Never liked it, never will  I see it being discontinued in a few more months.

Ok, step awaay from the crack pipe! Its ok if you dont like it, but there is NO way the shuffle will be discontinued in a few months. The shuffle sells like crazy and will be around for a long time there pal.

interesting

i guess that there won't be any special music / iTunes special event on the horizon then. i'm sure the billion song promo and this new nano would have been left for such an event....

I have a iPod G5 - thinking about getting another little MP3 player for work/school and that sort of thing... just to hold a few songs that realy liking at that point in time.

1GB iPod Nano might do the trick

Where'd you get that G5???

But, I'm with you on this...I have a 20GB 4th Gen iPod, which holds *almost* all my content, but I only really listen regularly to a small fraction of that. My PB goes with me from home to work, so I'm not far from my music on a daily basis. For a long flight, I can bring along the 20GB. I think for day-to-day stuff (podcasts and a couple of playlists) this would be great.

Great!! Exactly what I'm after!!!

For me, this means I can have a Nano plus the compulsory after market case for the same cost as a 2Gb Nano! Yay!!!

One slight annoyance though- Student discount only gets me an extra £4 off...

Bought a black one yesterday, then it shipped YESTERDAY and will be delivered (for FREE) on Friday!

Weird thing - it shipped from PA!!! Never heard of Apple shipping for PA before, thought it was always CA or overseas???

Well I certainly wouldnt consider a 1GB model.

And a lot of others won't, either.

But a lot, like me, will. I have a 20GB that I use as my main player. I use it in the car, at work and when I travel. But in the gym, or while I'm jogging, I find it too big and heavy. I don't need my whole collection with me... Just enough to get me through a couple weeks of workouts. Then, I'll load it up with some fresh songs. For this very reason, the new Nano will be a big success. I already see a TON of iPods minis, shuffles and Nanos at the gym. My guess is that most of these people don't have large music collections or they don't see the need to have their whole music collection at the gym.

Bingo- my exact reason for wanting one :)

I was recently bought a Q-Be 512mb MP3 player, and while it's darn cool and so small, it doesn't play my iTunes-purchased music, so I don't know what to do...

Why would someone buy a 1GB player when you can get a 60GB with video? Well because it's smaller and cheaper, that's why!

Before this, I considered the shuffle, but thought it was a little too pricey, and the Nano too. I don't need all that space. Used to have a 3G iPod, but not anymore. With that kind of consumer electronics, I don't want something very expensive and sensitive. If it's closer to $100 than $300, the scratches would be less agonizing.

From the US with edu-discount, I think that would be an OK deal. $129 for an iPod with display, that's not bad.

Still overpriced, but you are paying for the name and not the product.

How is $69 for a shuffle overpriced? Are there other 512 players out for cheaper? Link?

With the ipod, you're absolutely paying for the product, I haven't seen anything else that beats it on quality, value, and ease of integration.

However, if the Nano is an acceptable size then why would you accept it having the same constrained storage of the smaller shuffle?

I think of it this way - for $50 more, you can add a screen (and playlists and a couple other features) to a shuffle. It's very tempting, I can see getting one of the new 1 gigs. Don't forget, lower price is a "feature".

The shuffle is a solid seller - if you don't like it, don't buy it. But there is definitely a market for "as cheap as possible". Why shouldn't apple offer a product on the low end, instead of just giving away the low end of the market to a competitor? Maybe it will be discontinued one day (if they can get the nano down to $69?) but it makes sense for them to keep it. After all, if they can get a nano down to $69, they likely could sell a shuffle for $49 or $39.

Apple has done an excellent job with their models and price points, now more and more people are considering having a second ipod.
