So....

512MB Shuffle -- $69
1GB Shuffle -- $99
1GB nano -- $149
2GB nano -- $199
4GB nano -- $249
30GB iPod video -- $299
60GB iPod video -- $399

But why get a 2GB nano when you can get a 4GB nano for X more? And why get a 4GB nano when you can get a 30GB iPod video for X more, and a better cost/MB ratio?...

...and why get a 30GB iPod video when you can get 10 - 60GB iPod videos, a 20" iMac, and a $10,000 iTunes card...for only $.99

Excellent news.

Apple now have the market completely covered. The new 1Gb Nano thwarts the crop of look-alikes that are beginning to appear, and the new price-point of the Shuffle eats into the low-end / unbranded market.

It's this sort of move that keeps the iPod on top.

Yeah, stupid valentines day and all that. My gf got me an ipod mini before they came out in the UK, back in the day when i was having fun dissing mac. Now i have a powerbook, cinema display, isight, 5g ipod and no end in sight!

This is crazy, I thought maybe a new shuffle with a screen, but a 1 GB nano! Maybe I can convince my pops to get one for his 2 hour commute to NYC everyday. Thanks Apple!!!! I totally didn't see this coming.

Edit: On second thought... He could get a used 15 GB iPod for roughly the same price.

I don't think the shuffle is going anywhere. It is an awesome Swiss Army Knife mp3 player.

I've run a bunch of marathons, trained hundreds of miles and spent countless hours at the gym with mine. The nano would be dead by now.

Cancelled my nano order. I still think it's too flimsy.

How would the nano be dead?

The only issue the nano has is that the front plastic facade gets scratched easily. I've had my black nano since release, not used any holders, have put it in pockets with other things, and I can still read the screen perfectly well. It doesn't look as nice as it used to, but so what, it still plays. I could use some plastic polish to get it looking good again I suppose.

I don't think it is that flimsy. More fool the person that puts it in their back pocket and sits on it!

Because you don't have X more? Just a thought. Some of us live on actual budgets. See, there's this stuff called money and it doesn't grow on trees... Of course, if it did, somebody would just buy all the land the trees grow on and patent the tree's DNA...

I'm going to have to agree here. Initially, I bought the Shuffle, on the premise that it would be ideal for workouts (flash memory, plastic, etc). However, after a few months of use, it shorted out due to sweat. I switched to the Nano, and I've had no problems. All around, I believe it's manufactured to a higher quality than the Shuffle, and I'm happy to see a 1GB version.

Yeah, that poster was actually being sarcastic I think and were pointing out much of the same that you are.

I agree with both of you too! $150 is a lot more affordable than the $250 on the top model and even better than $200 on the mid-range. Someone who buys the 1 GB model is going to have basically the same experience as someone who buys the 2 or 4 GB models, they just don't fit as much music on it. Hey, you know some people don't even have 1 GB worth of music sitting in iTunes. Plus, then there is a case like mine, no way my music is going to fit on even the 4GB Nano, so I'm going to have to pick and choose songs even with the 4GB, so even for me the 1GB presents a good value.

I think this was a smart release by Apple, and the Shuffle prices are quite remarkable.

The price drop on the shuffle is welcome. I like how it doubles as a flash drive without a having to use a doc cable.

Now if I'd only get my ipod battery settlement check I'd go out and pick one up! Anyone got their check's yet?

I think the Shuffle still has it's place in Apple's iPod lineup,
but I would love to see Apple release a 6 or 8GB Nano this June and
lower the price of the 1GB and 4GB and discountinue the 2gb.
Sort of like this:

512 Shuffle $69
1GB Nano $99
4GB Nano $199
8GB Nano $249

I think the lineup and prices will all be dependent on the cost of flash memory. I would bet that 6-8GB of flash memory would be too expensive currently to price a Nano at $249.

What I could see happening later this year is this:

512MB Shuffle - $69
1GB Shuffle - $99
2GB Nano - $149
4GB Nano - $199
6-8GB Nano - $249

I think we are at the point where the low-end capacities are good enough and they won't need to increase the 512MB to a 1GB and the 1GB to a 2GB for the shuffle line... besides, w/o a screen more than 1GB is probably too much.

I think when the cost of the rest of the hardware is more than the cost of the flash, then we'll see an increase in the capacity of the shuffles along with probably the addition of a small screen.

This is good news. At least the shuffle stays. :D BTW, the story makes it sound like the 1GB shuffle has always been $99. Wasn't it $129 before?

I've got a pile of iPods, they all have different uses/implementations -

512 shuffle with Apple sports case - workout with lots of sweat; any larger capacity and I'd want a display.

4GB nano(going back today for screen repair - screen died in m top vest pocket yesterday, only half still works) it is my daily use pod at work and in car.

60GB Photo & 60 GB Video Pods - so I always have my whole collection with me and some photos and TV shows if I get bored.

5GB original - 'cause I collect stuff(packrat)

There is very much a market for the shuffle WITH a sports case(waterproof)

IMO a very smart move by Apple

The guys at arstechnica threw a nano out of a moving car at 50MPH and it still worked fine. Scratched, but working. Then they dropped it onto concrete from 10 feet. The screen went wonky and the nano continued to play music just fine.

Then they ran over it with a car. Screen cracked, "Crunch!" And the nano played on. The controls still worked. They finally killed it by tossing it as high as they could into the air with a concrete landing. So I think the nano is pretty durable.

Oh, and they started by sitting on it. I don't think they did the pocket test though, that would put a different kind of stress on it than just putting it on a chair and sitting on it.

Personally, I want one, but I want it to autofill like the shuffle does.

Sounds pretty realistic, unfortunately. It would be nicer if they'd drop the price on the Shuffles when they shift the line the next time.

On the other hand, I could see them dropping the Shuffle entirely and going:

1GB Nano - $129
2GB Nano - $149
4GB Nano - $199
6-8GB Nano - $249

the year the shuffle was introduced, people wanted a shuffle with a screen. actually for people who where biitching then, here is your iPod shuffle + screen.

Disreagerd my remark...I got the price of the 2GB nano wrong.. so infact the 1GB is prety good after all.

At some point the price of 512MB of flash memory is not going to be a significant cost in the device compared to all the other costs (battery, PCB, CPU, casing, manufacturing, shipping, etc).

Right now 512MB of flash memory might be costing apple $20. The other costs might be another $25. That'd make Apple's profits around $25, sounds reasonable for a $69 Apple device.

If it dropped to $10, Apple could cut say, $15 off the price of the Shuffle. So it'd be $55 - maybe Apple would sacrifice a bit of profit margin and sell it at $49, but I think $59 would appeal to them more. Of course the 1GB Shuffle would have $20 of flash instead of $40, so would drop by $30 to $69 (or $79). The 1GB nano could be sold for $119 ($129) instead of $149 (ignoring price drops elsewhere). This is what I expect the price lineup at the beginning of 2007 to be.

But further price drops beyond this will not have as much of an effect at the low end. If 512MB flash dropped to $5 (which it probably will come 2008) then Apple could trim another $7.50 off the price, maybe $10 at most (shrink size, more power efficient CPU, smaller battery). $39 iPod Shuffle 512MB in 2008? That'd be cannibalising higher end sales I think, but it'd be a no-brainer purchase in that market area apart from the closeness of the 1GB Shuffle in pricing now that flash memory was such a minor component. So I predict the 512MB Shuffle will be dropped, but only at the end of 2007, when its price will have been $49 to $59 for a year.

Apple needs a player at 99$US (psychological "under 100$US" barrier). And with the new iPod shuffle prices, Apple can't drop the shuffle until they can sell a 512MB iPod nano for 69$US, which is probably far, far away. And I now don't see them going back to B&W screens either, even to cut costs.

Adding to Hattig's comments, I also now think Apple's target in the long term (when costs allow it) is to have an iPod at every 50$US price points:

1GB iPod shuffle 49$US
1GB iPod nano 99$US
2GB iPod nano 149$US
4GB iPod nano 199$US
40GB iPod 249$US
60GB iPod 299$US
80GB iPod 349$US

Note that Apple are almost already there... Aside from the 512MB iPod shuffle being at 69$US, and the 100$US price jump between the 30GB and 60GB iPod, they have an iPod at every 50$US price points.

i am a die hard shuffle fan, and if they actually discontinue the shuffle i want to buy a few of them for if/when my current one gets damaged or lost. i think they are great, i use them on a daily basis for listening to tunes as well as a flash drive. i also love that they are ultra durable!! so i hope they dont get discontinued, though it does seem very odd to have a 1GB nano and a 1GB shuffle. do the nanos offer the autofill option that the shuffles do? and i wonder if there is a mini-dock that could plug a nano directly in, as if it were a shuffle. . . . if so id probably buy a nano, simply because they look cooler! (though i would be a little nervous about the durability)
I'm with you 110%. I use my Shuffle for working out and traveling to and from class. While I'm running or lifting, I never need a screen to see what's coming up. I also use my Shuffle at work as a pen drive. With the sport case, I get all the looks and "That's an iPod at work!?" I'd love a sleeve or case for the nano that added pen drive style to the Nano w/o the cord.

Please tell me why those activites would have killed a nano? I have asked before.....:D

Edit: I see I am not the only one who wants to know!

This is briliant pricing.

$69 for an iPod. Get 'em hooked while they're young and poor. By the time they want a player with bigger capacity, all their music will be in AAC, so they'll have to get the nano or the video iPods. Brilliant.

And they'd better not stop selling the shuffles anytime soon! They fill a market perfectly. I'm thininking of getting a 512mb shuffle, now that it's only $69 and my 3G 15GB iPod died. Maybe I'll get a settlement check and only pay $20 for the shuffle!

Ditto that. I have a 20GB iPod, but my little 1GB Shuffle gets more use — I can just fill that thing up and chuck it in my gym bag without a second thought. No way I'd be doing that with a delicate little Nano. I hope Apple continue the Shuffle line for gym junkies everywhere.
