I'm extremely confused as to if you need a shoe sensor (not the receiver that plugged into the fifth-generation iPod nano) to track your distance and pace with this new seventh-generation iPod nano. If not, how does it track your distance without any external sensors?

The sad thing is, since the 'old style' nano was discontinued, Apple now don't make a media player that can easily be operated one-handed or blindfolded (e.g. in a pocket). As I see it, the "nano" is now just an upgraded shuffle. Also, 16GB was the maximum capacity of the 4th gen nano (which I have - lovely device). That was released 3 years ago - capacity really should be a higher priority than making it the size of a postage stamp.

The click-wheel might not be newfangled multitouch, but it gets the job done.

Bluetooth Receiver?

I'd like to see one of these with a built in bluetooth receiver to stream music and notifications etc from my iPad and use short earphones.

SAME MODEL NUMBER, NOT A "NEW" NANO!

I just went to the online apple store and added a "new" nano to my cart, the model number/part number is exactly the same "MC696LL/A" for a green 16gb.

So, this topic should be re-named "iPod nano SOFTWARE updated, price reduced."

Now I don't know what to do, my 2nd gen is on ebay (16gb) and up to a whopping $15.50 right now.

Also, incase anyone cares, looks like 8g refurbs are $110 and 16g refurbs are $130. Thats the route I'll probably go. My 2nd gen is a refurb and its never had any problems and came in looking brand new.

I might look for a nice 5th gen...

I applied the 1.2 update....whoopty friggan do.

It still does something I don't like at all:

When wearing it as a watch, once it goes to sleep and I want to see the time, I have to click the button, swipe past the now playing song, swipe past the cover art, to get to the watch screen.

1 button press and 2 swipes to look at my wrist and see the time.

Why can't it just come back with the wake button and show me the clock, or the last thing it went to sleep with? Am I missing something here?

You can set it in the settings to wake with clock. It has been like that for a while...

They never launch for back to school, they use back to school to get rid of the previous gen stock.
Of course, it's worth noting that they did not have that promotion this year, where you get a free iPod Touch with your Mac pruchase, instead opting for $100 App Store cards.

... and then a few months later we have our iPhone refresh, and look! The Touch didn't get updated.

The connection is pretty obvious now in hindsight.

Hello,

there are some other devices that measure running speed and distance w/o external sensors just by counting steps with a built in acc sensor. This is (more or less) accurate when running a nearly constant pace all the time given a proper calibration. But when running in hilly terrain, cross running or when doing interval workouts I would not take the numbers too serious. Stride (distance per step) will vary considerably.

Settings -> General -> Date & Time -> Turn "on" Time on Wake.

When this is turned on, the clock face comes up when you press the button.

Yes, Apple will sell quite a few refurb 6th gens because of this.

I might look for a nice 5th gen...

And that's Secret Answer C. I have two 5th gen nanos myself, and personally think they're the best nanos ever (although the 2nd and 4th gen are a tie for close second). Video camera + video playback with built-in speaker + FM radio for those who want it + no-look Click Wheel UI = Major Bleepin' Win.

What more do you want from a Nano?

a low-power Bluetooth to connect with an iPad/iPhone/MacAir and display
e.g. notifications/email/connection data when in range and clock mode ?

seems like Apple is slowing down on innovation when dominated a market ..

I'm kinda upset about this but, only at myself. I just bought my wife a blue Nano 8G Refurbed.... for 129.99. I guess I should've waited.

Anyone think there might be a difference in the one I bought and the new priced ones?

THIS. Seriously, if they are now almost encouraging people to wear it like a watch bluetooth headphones is almost a must.

If it had bluetooth I would be getting one for Christmas no doubt, no it looks like I really wouldn't use it as running a wire down my arm isn't the most practical way to run/listen music.

This whole watch/wireless interface for you mac products is a really good idea actually. Hope someone at Apple is listening.

With the update that's just been released as described earlier in this thread, probably not.

The iPod Nano 6th gen is a eunuch, it isn't even worth $50. I think that Apple's plan was to push people onto the iPod touch by removing the attraction of the middle ground between a budget and a high end player.

No difference at all, exact same model number(s). Update your software and your set...

Depending on how recent your purchase was, you might try to contact Apple about a refund. Only $20, but $20 is $20...

That's what I am thinking. I wonder if I called Apple and asked nicely, if I could send this one back unopened and exchange it for the new one (for the same price).

Thanks for the reply.

Ahh, didn't see this post till after I replied to the previous one. I JUST bought it last Friday (30th). I will give them a call and see.

EDIT: Ohh, yeah, hopefully the software is/will be the same.

Thank you for the reply too.
