There are similarly-priced MP3 players on the market with color screens, larger capacities, and also clips, so it really wouldn't be surprising to me if Apple does decide to discontinue the Shuffle. The market for these players are dwindling anyway.
For work out, this is the best device.
Shuffles are great for running, especially given the latest iPhones are too big to run with.
We all know what's happening next here though - extinction.

They need to come out with only one iPod. Storage that ranges from 16GB to 128 or 256, has a small touch screen like 2" or so, and built in clip. This would satisfy the people that get it for exercise and the people that want a simple iPod that holds all their music.

They need to keep the shuffle around as they are the only iPod that is properly eyes free. you don't have to look at a screen - they have toward and backwards, play and pause, volume, shuffle and continuous play buttons all easy to use without looking down, plus voiceover.
They're probably just changing suppliers or something.
Would be great if it had a build in pedometer, that could sync with to the health app.
It might mean the Apple watch will have a fair amount of storage on it!?
They could just add voice over to the nano and it would come with the mic and controls on the EarPods.
It would be completely sad to see the entire iPod family become extinctit's one of the original products that brought Apple into the market-changing Spotlight.
Put mine, accidentally, through a two-hour wash in the washing machine over a year ago, and it still works perfectly.
If your washing machine takes two hours to wash your clothes, perhaps you should replace it instead.

Noticed a few comments saying 'it was best for running' or 'best for working out'.
I think we all might know why it might be discontinued then.
Yeah you're right.
People don't listen to music in 2015 anymore.
Plus they have the music player on their iPhone 6 Plus for when they want to listen to something while exercising.
Time to phase out music and iTunes in general. The market is done with music.
