There are similarly-priced MP3 players on the market with color screens, larger capacities, and also clips, so it really wouldn't be surprising to me if Apple does decide to discontinue the Shuffle. The market for these players are dwindling anyway.

Guess it's time to order a new one, just in case my old one dies. I've been using it for running for many years. Clips on the back of my hat with headphones so I have no cables dangling anywhere. It's gotten me through hundreds of miles of training runs.

For work out, this is the best device.

Agreed. Just got one of my wife because she is a runner and the small device and clip is perfect for that. Also I like the fact there is no screen. Makes easier to focus on the run without the distraction of looking for a song. Just put on shuffle and go.

They're not out of stock. I thought the same thing, but if you look really close, you can see the new Shuffles.

I am a full-time runner, as in running is actually my job. I run 6 days a week and usually log between 3,500 and 4,500 miles a year. I use my iPod Shuffle a lot. In fact, I own two of them.

If Apple discontinues the Shiffle, then I will immediately buy 4 or 5 more. I absolutely love it and I can't live without it.

Shuffles are great for running, especially given the latest iPhones are too big to run with.

We all know what's happening next here though - extinction.

Cheaper mp3 players are as good. Or maybe better. But then maybe if folks are too entrenched in their itunes library for whom this might still be a useful product.

They need to come out with only one iPod. Storage that ranges from 16GB to 128 or 256, has a small touch screen like 2" or so, and built in clip. This would satisfy the people that get it for exercise and the people that want a simple iPod that holds all their music.

That would not be preferable to the current shuffle for runners. Current shuffle is just about perfect for running (Bluetooth would be the only thing I'd add).

They need to keep the shuffle around as they are the only iPod that is properly eyes free. you don't have to look at a screen - they have toward and backwards, play and pause, volume, shuffle and continuous play buttons all easy to use without looking down, plus voiceover.

They're probably just changing suppliers or something.

Would be great if it had a build in pedometer, that could sync with to the health app.

I don't want a clip. I like having a shock resistant case with a clip. That way it's protected if I drop it.

Yeah you're right.

People don't listen to music in 2015 anymore.

Plus they have the music player on their iPhone 6 Plus for when they want to listen to something while exercising.

Time to phase out music and iTunes in general. The market is done with music.

I never knew that the shuffle even had a market anymore. A 2gb MP3 player without a screen. You just have to memorize the order of the playlist? Or being able to randomize the songs, or "shuffle" them is the big feature?

Hiking, cycling, doing physical work...the Shuffle is brilliant.

Put mine, accidentally, through a two-hour wash in the washing machine over a year ago, and it still works perfectly.

It would be cool if Apple were to allow you to wirelessly sync playlists from your itunes/iphone to the shuffle so if you want to take only music with you to the gym you can leave your iphone in the car.

They could just add voice over to the nano and it would come with the mic and controls on the EarPods.

Is this what the Pebble watch is based on? I sold me for over $100 used back 2-3 years ago or is this something else? $49 sounds dirty cheap for an iPod!

But that's a heap more expensive, plus it's much easier just to use the shuffles clip and built in controls.

Most people buying a shuffle have it as a supplementary device to the iPhone and buy it because it's cheap. The nano is more expensive and more likely for people who are not going to buy an iPhone, as its bacically a stripped down iPod touch.

It would be completely sad to see the entire iPod family become extinct :( it's one of the original products that brought Apple into the market-changing Spotlight.

If anything; Apple will go high tech to compete with Sony's $1,119 music Walkman player! I would think Apple new iPod will be priced at $2,499. LOL!

If your washing machine takes two hours to wash your clothes, perhaps you should replace it instead.

That may be the "cultural difference" between European and American washing machines ... ;) I'm from Europe and was surprised how brief the cleaning programs overseas are working. But remember that even Steve Jobs was swearing by (on?) his German Miele machine!

Aside from that whole personal computer thing, the graphical user interface stuff, the mouse.

----------

Noticed a few comments saying 'it was best for running' or 'best for working out'.

I think we all might know why it might be discontinued then.

I thought about this, but as I understand it there will only be limited storage on the apple watch, it would need you to have your phone with you to stream anything, and i dont think ther will be any audio out jack (requiring pricey and somewhat bulky BT headphones for working out).

He really didnt say any of those things, did he. He just noted that as the market size is smaller nowadays (undeniably so), Apple may focus its efforts elsewhere. Who knows if its true, but its not as wild as you seem to think.

It could be that Apple is preparing for a refresh along with the iPad pro and iPod touch but unlikely at this point.

My 1GB first gen Shuffle is still plugging away....close to a decade now? Always been tempted to buy one of the newer ones with the built-in clips, though.
