Now the store site is up. My order status shows preparing for shipment. Ya!

p.s. my order was made at 00:03 9/14/2012.

If this was a retail employee, then they were guessing. They have no more information about release dates than you or I do. Imagine the number of leaks there would be if 60k blue shirts were in the know. Many of which are working their first job and unfamiliar with the severity of breaching a NDA.

This is known as earmarking funds.

Over in the "Buy Now" thread there's an ongoing discussion of who's at what order status. It seems to me that the engraved/non-US orders are getting to the Preparing stage first. Personally, I'm still at the processing stage, and I ordered mine on the 14th.

Ahh now I got it :) I've been a bit confused because of these engraved/non-engraved preorders-discussions over there. I didn't even preorder one and hope to get one in local stores. What do you think? Is that possible on release day? Sadly, I don't think so...
 
I'd say your best bet would be to go to an Apple store on release day if you wanted one. What color/size are you going for.

I wonder which models are most popular at this point? I'd assume white/silver or black/slate would be the most popular.

That sounds pretty well, I'll go for a yellow one, 64 GB. As you said, the most popular colors I've heard of as preorders were black and silver.

I'll try my luck on release day. Fingers crossed ;)

Same here, which is what's bothering me. People who ordered after me are getting their orders prepared for shipment first. I mean, I know I'll get mine eventually, but I would at least like to have a better idea of when "eventually" is. I just really wish Apple would nail down a more specific date range than the entire freaking month.
 
As was pointed out on the other thread the engraved orders are probably having their status updated once the engraving done- so the order can't be cancelled once the back is engraved. It probably doesn't mean we've 'jumped the queue'.

This makes sense, nevertheless it's quite sad ;)
But how long does it take to engrave a bunch of iPods? I can't guess, but I hope, it won't take long.
 
At this point, it's just a fun guess as to what's going on. I'm waiting for someone to jump on and say "mine's shipped!!!!!1!!11". Then it becomes real...
 
I'm a latecomer to Apple - my iPad 2 was my first Apple product. After I ordered it on launch day, I downloaded the manual so I could learn more about it.

Have been looking for the manual for the iPod Touch 5G. There is none.

Is it normal for Apple to not make the manual available if they are shipping the product?
 
Ordered on September 14th. Canadian order. No engraving.

Still "Processing".

Slightly annoyed. But waiting. :)
 
I preordered mine and my CC is charged, and the status is prepareing for shipment. I even got it engraved and a US order :)
 
So the trend I'm seeing is that engraved iPods are receiving status changes and non-engraved are still the same, has to be something to that...

Interesting...

Mine is US order with engraving and ordered on 9/14 00:03. The status is now prepared for shipment.
 
Maybe since engraving takes longer , apple dealed with them first but others would not take so much time
 
I order an iPod touch 5g engraved at October 3. Do you think it will take a long time for preparing for shipment? It is now processing.
