I've mentioned this in other threads (let me know if you agree): I think the iPod touch 6th generation will be similar to the transition from the 2nd to 3rd generation (like an S-upgrade). This will mean upgraded internals, but not externals. There will be no more iPod touch loop (based on the picture), probably because Apple didn't want to produce new ones in new colors (and probably because only a small portion of people use it).

As far as specs, I think it will have an A7-chip with 1GB of RAM (it will be introduced in July 14th so that they can say it's only one generation behind current hardware, even if for only two months). It will have the same 5MP rear-facing camera (again, based on the picture), and it might have the slightly improved front-facing camera from the iPhone 5s.

Just like the iPod touch 5th generation is like an iPad Mini 1 in pretty much all specs, I expect the iPod touch 6th generation to be like an iPad Mini 2 in pretty much all specs. This means Apple will save the true-tone flash, improved cameras, Touch ID, Apple Pay, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, etc. for the 7th generation (assuming this upcoming one sells well enough for them to want to produce it). My only questions is: why didn't they introduce these iPods in September 2014 to take advantage of the holidays?

Yet's predict the specs!
Here I go,
A7 processor and M7 processor
8 megapixel iSight camera (i dont think we'll see burst mode, time lapse, or slow mo on this iPod)
720p FaceTime Camera.

Yeah I think thats about it.

Personally, I'm just hoping that the July 14th date turns out to be correct. Judging by how accurate the time marker has been at predicting an actual announcement, though, I'm pretty hopeful.

This seems likely to me.

We have to see time lapse, even if the camera stays the same (as even the iPad Mini 2 has it). Also, I doubt we would see a better FaceTime camera than the iPhone 6. The iPhone 5s's is more likely, if it is even changed at all (the iPad Mini 2's and 3's isn't changed from the iPad Mini 1).

I wish they would have included the same 8MP camera from the iPad Air 2. Both that iPad and the iPod touch have the same thickness, so it would have allowed a non-protruding camera on the iPod.

I visited an Apple Store and the sellperson said they habitually have the new products the same day as the announcement, is it true?
My son's birthday is in 3 weeks, so the timing would be perfect if it is launched next week. He said he wants the 5th gen if the 6th isn't launched soon...

Yeah I also think it will be pretty similar to the 5s. I was mistaken, I had thought 5s, 6, and 6 Plus had 1080p FaceTime camera. My mistake.

Don't worry about it :)

The iPhone 5s had a front-facing camera that had better low-light capabilities than the iPhone 5, and the iPhone 6 one had a larger aperture.

It will have the same size screen, maybe a slight bump in resolution, the A7 or A8 SOC, 16 and 64 and 128gb storage, a slight camera upgrade, and 1 or 2gb ram, let's hope for 2. And it will have WiFi and Bluetooth upgrades. But it will be the same price and that's important and why it will not have tons of spec upgrades.
I think the idea of a 4" Touch like it is now but with a A7 or A8 is pretty cool. Not sure about Touch ID, I mean Apple were supposed to be working on making cheaper sensors so its a possibility I guess?

128 GB in blue for me. All I care about is this thing being a dedicated MUSIC player and a replacement for the Classic.

I actually want it to maintain the 4 inch screen as it will complement my 6 plus really well. A7 would be fine. If it stays at 4 inches then the screen resolution doesn't need to be increased. I'd like the camera from the iPhone 5. The 5S camera would be an unexpected bonus. 1GB of ram is likely. 2 is unlikely considering that only the iPad Air 2 has 2GB of ram.

The above in a nice gold or pink colour is a straight up buy for me.

Remember when the iPod touch was actually on par with the iPhone hardware wise? Or in the case of the 2nd gen, clocked slightly higher. Those were the days, haha. I've got a 2nd gen still and I had a 3rd gen that was awesome because it was as fast as the 3GS and could multitask when iOS 4 hit. Then it started going downhill with the 4th gen. Yeah it had a retina display, but it wasn't IPS. Yeah it had an A4 chip, but with half the RAM. And it hasn't been the same since.

I for one would like to see an A8 in them with a 4.7" display and have them close to the iPhone 6 base hardware. But it looks like it'll basically be a 5s in the current body. I probably won't get one now though because I've completely moved all my media duties to my iPod classic since I got one before they got discontinued. My iPhone or Z10 handles the rest. But if it's really that awesome I may give it a chance. If only because I've always wanted a red one since my 2nd gen PRODUCT RED iPod nano got stolen back in the day (a whole 4GB!). I did convert my 4th gen to a red front panel before I sold it. It was actually pretty sweet. Along with my 4s at the time.

I really do hope this is going to happen, and I hope they advertise it a little. The iPod line needs a little love these days. And a 128GB option should be a requirement since the dropping of the Classic. There are some of us that truly need all the space we can get our hands on.

I've just checked and I only have 12 GBs free on my 128GB iPhone 6 plus. Therefore I think I definitely need an iPod touch. I really hope they release a new one on Tuesday.

In my opinion, the iPod shuffle & iPod nano are iPods, but the touch isn't. The iPod touch is more of an iPhone/iPad hybrid than just a music player. In fact, I think Apple should rebrand it as an iPad nano, and offer it in 4.7" and/or 5.5" versions. I think that would reenergize the iPod touch sales big time. Hey, Give it a SIM card for cellular data too. Why not? It wouldn't canabalize iPhone sales. Heck, the current iPhone 6 plus is almost as big as an iPad mini and sales are booming.

Not everyone wants an iPhone. But would love a beefed up iPod touch. Even many with an iPhone would want one. Not everyone likes to have their iPhone drained while listening to music. Or taking pics. Or playing games. Or surfing the net.

I have an iPad mini with a grandfathered unlimited att data plan, and until recently, an iPod touch 5 which unfortunately got dropped in water and died. I used it to take pictures for my travel blog. I hope the iPod touch 6 gets a better camera. One that rivals the camera in the iPhone 6. I think Apple crippling the iPod touch specs is a mistake. They need to create an iPod touch on steroids. One that will get people excited again. It's not just for kids. It's for people like me too.

It's been 3 years since the last update to the iPod touch. I think it'd be a HUGE mistake if Apple just gives the iPod touch 6 a minor update. They really need to steroid this puppy up. Give it a better camera, Touch ID, better wifi etc. Dont save it for version 7 if this one hopefully does well. Give it the update it deserves after 3 years. Not some half assed minor one.

I agree, the iPod touch deserves better than giving it only an A7 chip with 1GB of RAM and calling it a day (they should have done that last year). Many will think it's not worth it, so they won't purchase it, thus making the iPod touch once again have low demand. As sad as this might sound, if the 6th generation doesn't sell well (even if it's their fault), then they might decide to discontinue the line. We've seen time and time again that they don't really care about iPods anymore.
