I received an iPod touch 6 on Saturday. I haven't been thrilled with -- and am somewhat concerned about -- my little device's battery life. I use it mainly for Music (the Apple App) and TuneIn Radio (listening to local radio stations), both drawing off WiFi. I do the infrequent email check and take a photo here and there, which uploads to the iCloud. Messages gets some use. Finally, some light Safari.

How long should I realistically expect the battery to last? I've noticed that the battery DRAINS when using TuneIn Radio (with the screen off, running in background). I started it at noon today and by 4 pm I received the 20% warning. I have enacted all the battery-saving methods of which I know: background updates, off; location services, off; brightness, reduced.

So, what say you?

THANKS for your insight!

A.

Can't speak to some of your usage, but TuneIn radio with the screen off should run for a lot longer than 4 hours. I don't have an iPod 6 yet, but my 5 will run TuneIn with the screen off for 6 odd 7 hours at least. And this is with a battery that is getting old and weak and doesn't give much life when using the screen.

THANKS for your reply, colodane! That's what I was figuring. I'm going to run it again today and see what results I get. I'm figuring that based on what Apple lists (40-hours of music -- and yes, I AM aware that that is under "test track" conditions) and what others have reported in this thread, I -- and anyone else -- should be able to get at least twelve hours (a solid day) on a single charge, even with light usage in there. So, maybe I got one of the honkers.

THANKS again!

I am disappointed by the battery life of my new iPod touch 6G. I did some checks and here's what I found:

- The iPod battery indicator is crazy below 20%: between 20% and 12% indication (when it shuts down) it actually supplies 25% of the battery capacity. If you recharge when you get the 20% battery warning then you will only get 75% of the possible runtime.

- To prolong battery life, there are many iPod settings you can turn off: Google for these. Doing a full restore didn't help.

- To measure battery life objectively, install the geekbench3 app, turn Bluetooth and wifi off, charge your iPod for 2 1/2 hours, disconnect the charger and run the geekbench battery benchmark until the iPod turns itself off (because the battery is discharged). If you get a runtime of about 2 1/2 hours and a score of about 1500 then your iPod is normal. See this link for other people's iPod benchmarks (in geekbench, an iPod 6G is called an ipod7,1):

http://browser.primatelabs.com/battery3/search?utf8=✓&q=Ipod7,1

- I measured the current going into my iPod as it charged, and found the battery capacity was a bit over 1000 mAh, as claimed. Strangely, it had only charged to 80% capacity when the iPod said it was 100% charged (after about 1 1/2 hours). So now I charge my iPod for 2 1/2 hours to ensure it is fully charged. Also strangely, charging for the extra hour doesn't improve the geekbench battery benchmark score.

- Some apps can have good battery life. I streamed this YouTube video in Safari and got 8 hours of runtime, which I thought was good (360P video, brightness 50%, volume low):

- The iPod has a small battery (about 1000 mAh) and my iPad 3 has a big battery, about 10 times the size of the iPod. Battery life on the iPod is bound to be much, much lower than on my iPad. For example, on my iPad streaming tunein radio in through wifi and out to a Bluetooth speaker with the screen off, the battery drops 4% per hour, which I don't notice. On an iPod, with a battery a tenth the size, you might expect the battery to drop 10 times as much: 40% per hour. In fact it only drops about 25% per hour. So the iPod is more efficient than my iPad. Even though the battery doesn't last many hours.

- In normal light use (email, take some photos, browse) I get a few hours use. That's the way the iPod is, just enjoy it.

Hi Stan!

Thank you for your post. After experimenting with my iPT, I've come to the very same conclusions as you. In my case, I used my iPT and did NOT run the TuneIn Radio app; the results were that my battery life was nothing short of amazing -- and that includes running Safari, Music, Mail, Messenger, Siri, Camera, Zite ... In other words, light use yet significant apps. After a full day (morning to night) and using said apps here and there, my battery was showing not even 20% used.

Thus, it looks like in my case TuneIn Radio was/is guilty of eating the battery. It may be a case of it being processor intensive. It might even be tan the code isn't as optimized as it should be. Whatever the case, all things considered, it delivers decent play-time.

So, I'm happy now. I'm pleased. It's a fun little device. I actually enjoying using for quick email checks and such than my iPad. As Stan noted, "just enjoy it." I am doing just that.

THANKS!

I have been thoroughly impressed with the battery life on the IPT6 so far. I used it on a really long international flight pretty constantly, plugging in and out of two different WiFi spots, watching two movies, and listening to several hours of music and it was still around 20% full when I arrived at my destination.

The battery of this thing is as lame as an old ipod touch 5 being 2 years old but of course processing is faster and worth it.

There is a good app to display iPod battery percent as a widget. 'Sys info widget' by Alexander Clauss. Install the widget, then just swipe down from the top of the screen to see the battery percent on the notifications screen.

My iPod Touch 6G? Battery life compared to my old one... is crap.

But I mean, considering the par for the course of battery life of Apple iOS devices today, it's okay.

My 6G has terrible battery life. Not nearly as good as the 5G. But I think I just got a lemon battery that is not typical.

I ordered mine on the day the iPt 6th gen was announced and received it on Friday last week. I did the usual, turned it on, went through all that start up hoopla on the screen then went on to restore a back up from my previous gen iPt which is still running iOS 7.1.2, and it seemed to have restored everything just fine until I noticed that the battery seems to drain faster even on standby. I was only able to make the battery last for about close to 2 days while performing light usage. I wasn't gaming, listening to music, just checking Twitter from time to time (max about 1 min use before it goes back to sleep). I turned off background refresh afterwards and after charging it Sunday evening - Monday morning yesterday, I still have a slit of a percentage left, again after what I consider light to moderate usage. On the old iPt 5 I would've been easily able to make the battery last for a few more days, like around 5-7. If I absolutely don't touch it it can even reach 10 days while still retaining a bit of charge. But this 6th gen has me a bit worried as I dunno if the A8/M8 is eating up the battery a lot faster even though it's supposed to be more battery efficient. I will restore the iPt 6 to factory settings and do some more testing, while restoring my backup to the prev gen for now.

What are your guys' battery life like if you leave it on standby?

my standby..

Battery life is fine on mine - of course, it's not 5 days like my phone but it's not the same size as my phone, either.

Especially for gaming and videos?

I use mine for music in the car, and the odd game, surfing the web and You Tube. No messaging. I don't always use it for browsing though as I have plenty of other gadgets for that haha. But I get a reasonable time on the battery, if I hammer it with games it'll give me I don't know, 4 or 5 hours? I've been playing AG Drive on it a fair bit.

My iPod 3g 64gb still gets about 5 days standby plus an hour a day of listening; Wi-fi is turned off completely. When I first got it six years ago, it could get 10-14 days of standby with 1-2 hours of listening a day. Are those days long-gone?

The posted screenshot says 72 hours standby which is less than I get today on six year old tech. That's sad.

Not too bad. Mind you, I only use it for music as I also have an iPhone so I'd probably be getting different results if my usage was heavier. I do leave wifi on most of the time and also background app refresh since I have an app that scrobbles to my last.fm whenever I listen to anything on the iPod.

I typically charge mine twice a week or so - some days I don't use it as I have a phone with microSD that has a 6050 mAh battery.

I wouldn't want a thicker iPod with greater battery life.

"iPod touch 6th Gen: How's the battery life?"

In a word:

LOUSY! :)

-----------------------------------

If you use Wi-fi, the battery drains faster than a smoothly working bathtub! It's fine, otherwise.

However, no matter how one uses it, the % indicator is way off...

Plus, there are no battery warnings other than at 20%. And, it will shut off around 12% or 13% WITHOUT ANY NOTICE!
