Posting to note that my 2G ipod touch also drains its battery on standby.

Definitely do not want to do the wipe and sync "fix." That is total BS, Apple. Also don't want to have to manually shut off wifi when leaving the ipod overnight. Never was a problem before. I'm not happy about this. I don't want to have to worry about leaving it plugged in all night all the time just so I can use it the next day.

I read someone's report, and tried this:

I deactivated all my 2G iTouch 8G's email accounts, and the battery draining seems to have stopped. Everything else is still on.

Not a solution, just possible identification of the problem.

It Did NOT Work For Me.
Sorry.

Apple need to fix this ****. I hope there aren't any problems with the 4G and iOS4, which is what I'm most likely getting.

This is getting ridiculous, Apple need to sort this out setting it up as a new device is just not a reasonable solution (not that we're certain it'll work anyway).

I don't know why anyone would even consider upgrading to 4G after this mess. I won't be installing iOS4 on my iPad when it comes out.

I had the battery drain problem, so I restored my 3 generation ipod touch, set it up as new, and resynced, and it doesn't drain the battery anymore.

You lost all your app settings and saves though didn't you?

I don't think i did anything and now my battery works like how it did b4. Somehow my itouch works great now, no more battery drainage as of the past few days.

Jobs said the WiFi would not click off when the phone (iPod) went into standby mode. You have to remember to turn it off when you're not using it.

Airplane mode takes care of it, and then you just have to turn off airplane mode when you plan on resuming WiFi connection.

No idea why but I've been noticing this too. It pretty much stays where it was when I left it on standby. Don't know the reason.

If this is the case then that's a bad bad design. At least give an option to do that if you want but leave the default set as the old way. I mean come on, who thought that was a good idea to just sneak that in there?

Nevermind that, it's still depleting. I think it just happened to be out of the range of wifi (in my car parked out on the street).

I tested the airplane mode this past week and here are my results on 3G 64GB iPod Touch. Also I did not restore my device.

Tuesday:
WiFi on
45 min train ride (Music Playing) w/ a 10 min walk & 10 min bus ride

Apps constantly running in the background:
Awesome Note
Echofon
Line 2
Push Mail - 15 Mins
Medium Brightness

= Battery lasting 2hrs.

Wednesday:
Airplane Mode on
45 min train ride (Music Playing) w/ a 10 min walk & 10 min bus ride ** EQ turned off **

Apps constantly running in the background:
Awesome Note
Line 2
Mail set to manual and no fetch
Medium Brightness

= Battery lasting 6-7hrs.

And I had similar results on Thurs & Friday. Either way 7hrs is horrible, 2 hrs is heartbreaking considering I just got this iDevice in May.

I just turned off push notifications and email push and now my battery life has lasted me awhile. I had 7 windows in safari open and my batterys STILL up at the top. All the way full.

Yes. Having problems. My daughter upgraded to iOS4 and the battery would be completely drained by morning (while not being used).

She took it to the Genius Bar and they gave her a new one (it had 2 days left on warranty). Well, the new one was a pain to get fired up... had to restore/reset a few times. It finally got going and all seemed fine. But still had the battery drain overnight. I suspected WiFi/iOS4, so she turned off WiFi and the battery held it's charge the next night. And, now having other problems: apps crashing and it's freezing. Going to reset it again and see what happens.

What are "push notifications?"

Lucky 2 Days Left...
I Dont Really Care For My iPod Touch Anymore Because I Plan to Buy a iPhone 4 Black 16GB :p

Battery draining on iphone 3g

Hope this is helpful to some people. I was having the same battery draining issues since upgrading to iOS4 on my iPhone 3g. Apparently there's an issue with Exchange connectivity that is resolved with the following patch:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3398

Applying this also stopped my battery drain issues, so the two issues look to be related to the same thing.

Note: I couldn't install the patch directly using Safari on my iphone as suggested, kept getting "unknown error", but if you access it from you desktop & email it as an attachment to your device it installs just fine.

Battery Drain - what does Airplane mode exactly do?

I reported my battery life problems on my 3rd gen iPod Touch earlier & found this thread... I took some of the advice and turned Airplane mode ON, and disabled push notifications. It seemed to have improved my power life so far. Question: What exactly does Airplane mode do? I thought it just disabled your WiFi, but I was able to turn Airplane mode ON, and then manually re-enable my WiFi, so I'm still connected on WiFi even though Airplane mode is still On. Does Airplane mode do more than just disabling WiFi?
