I reported my battery life problems on my 3rd gen iPod Touch earlier & found this thread... I took some of the advice and turned Airplane mode ON, and disabled push notifications. It seemed to have improved my power life so far. Question: What exactly does Airplane mode do? I thought it just disabled your WiFi, but I was able to turn Airplane mode ON, and then manually re-enable my WiFi, so I'm still connected on WiFi even though Airplane mode is still On. Does Airplane mode do more than just disabling WiFi?

It diables WiFi.

I figured the most obvious thing Airplane mode ON does was to disable the WiFi... but since this is just an iPod Touch without the GSM call disabling like you would have on an iPhone, is there any other application that this Mode shuts off? For instance, I can turn Airplane Mode ON under settings, and that automatically disable WiFi. But while Airplane Mode remains ON, I can still turn WiFi back on, while still getting that airplane logo (airplane mode On notice) on the upper left screen, even though WiFi is still connected. I noticed battery life improvement from this, so I'm wondering if Airplane Mode (in an iPod Touch) involves more than just the WiFi feature, like any other applications that may be running in the background (& hogging battery life) unless airplane mode is activated.

I dont think so but im not positive.

"New data will be pushed to your ipod from the server."

Honestly I never really noticed what it did, I'll try running with it off and see how that goes.

So far this seems to have done the trick. No battery depletion at all on standby all day today. Guess no more push then..

I didn't use my iPod touch 2nd generation running iOS 4 for a day. It was 100% when I last used it and it dropped to 60% in one day on standby.

I'll try turning off push notifications since I find no use for them on an iPod touch (since it requires Wi-Fi and most people are on the go) and I'll report back.

3rd Gen iPod Touch:

Restore, set as new device, re-sync, battery works like a charm now.

new itouch ios4 equals no battery

purchased itouch 64GB 3 days ago. installed ios 4 software and now i'm lucky to get 3 hours of internet use out of it...is this normal, i assume not? can anything be done about? how long should an itouch go without having to charge it normally? can any one help?

Restore as new device as said above, or turn push notifications off.

Well, I am still on iOS3, but not for the reasons you think.

I am waiting for a Jailbreak ;)

I've never had Push Notifications turned on, and I've always had Wi-Fi and Email Push off unless I was using it, so I haven't really noticed a difference in battery life.
If there is a change that I haven't really noticed in my battery, I hope Apple delivers a fix.

After trying the turn off push fix for a few days the battery is definitely lasting longer on standby but it's still hemorrhaging power somehow. Definitely not lasting anywhere near as long on standby still as it was on version 3.

I guess right now the only option is to downgrade. :(

Well I did the clean restore over the weekend, as mentioned here, and didn't restore from backup. Needless to say it worked for me. The battery drain I was experiencing over night, in standby, has stopped. Also, something I didn't realize before, after my OS 4 upgrade, the option to create folders wasn't there. When I did my initial upgrade the folder option was not there. As soon as I did the clean restore the 'utilities' folder showed up and I was also able to create other folders to organize my applications. I would recommend to anyone having any issues after the OS 4 upgrade, to try an clean restore and sync. I was hoping this would correct the issue that I am having with Slacker shutting off after 20 minutes, it did, slightly, now it shuts off after 40 minutes.

Hmmmmmm...

Rrrrgh!

Same problem here... Now I sync the thing and it's reoptimizing all my photos - WTF!? I don't have an hour to burn while this is happening. What the heck was wrong with the photos before?

Anyway, the battery drain is a major issue. I use my iPod all day, and the battery life is a huge reason why. I don't want to be a slave to the charger. This completely sucks. What the #%¥€!! was wrong with the way it was before?

I usually like apple's design and performance, but it's stuff like this that has me wondering if ditching windows would be such a good idea.

Did you try turning off push notifications.

It's definitely the Wifi draining the battery. Despite it being on standby, the Wifi is still left on and continues to give you push notifications. I was basically just walking to the train station one day listening to music and all of a sudden the music was interrupted and I heard a push notification. I was all 'WTF' and I checked my iPod, and got some message from Facebook. I noticed that the Wifi was connected to some Wifi hotspot too.

Since then I've been turning my Wifi off whenever I don't need it. Battery life is okay, but somewhat troublesome.

I wanted to upgrade to 4.0 for the features I have been waiting for (playlist folders, homescreen everywhere, etc) but I have read of issues with 4.0 (I have the 3rd Gen 64g.) The only one I seem to understand that is major would be the WIFI being on all the time (when locked) which is a new feature (not an error from Apple) and that it drains the battery a lot.

Can I assume that if I turn on and off the WIFI only when I need it/don’t neet it (therefore say 10 minutes a day), that I won’t have a battery problem? The WIFI being off all the time (or almost) shouldn’t cause battery issues, correct? Or did I understand this incorrectly?

Any other major issues that I missed while on vacation that I should know about before upgrading to 4.0?

P.S. Push is always Off as well

Thanks

Turning off WiFi does help, but it's still not great. I really don't want to have to restore my device to get better battery quality, but I may have to.
