Touch Is About Wi-Fi Streaming and The Latest Stuff

After 2 years of rumors they finally introduce the iPod touch; but it only has 16Gb at max. Where's the iPod touch 160Gb!!!

The iPod 'Classic' start at 80Gb while the top model is 160Gb... Why don't put it in the high end iPod touch?! There finally is a 3.5" full screen device with not enough storage to put a couple of movies and music on it... BUMMER!!
I don't see it your way at all. The iTouch is about streaming live off the web video and playing recent lists of favorites. There will be a 32GB next year, 64GB 2009, 128GB 2010 and 250GB 2011 so just be patient. Not having the HD makes the battery life last much longer. Meanwhile the design makes a lot of sense to me. I couldn't be more thrilled - unless it had a 120GB NAND ram stick inside. ;)

I was hoping this would be "it," but it's not. I have a 30 gig iPod Photo and the 5/5.5 generation video iPods weren't a good enough upgrade in specs for me to spend money on. The new iPod classic is better in that it has Cover Flow, but at the same time, they should have given us a bigger screen for it. The new iPod nano has almost the same screen as a bigger iPod. That doesn't make much sense at all. And the iPod touch of course has the best sized screen, perfect for watching movies, but not enough space to take advantage of movies + music. I have 20 gigs of music and podcasts on my current iPod. I don't listen to all of it, but still, I have a crapload of DVD's as well so 16 gigs would not be enough for me even if I was really efficient at switching out the movies and songs. All they would have to do is make the click wheel smaller on the classic, perhaps make the classic taller, and make it widescreen. I'd be perfectly happy with that, even at 3 inches if they chose such a size (which is smaller than the iPhone or the new iPod touch). It's ridiculous to have a video player with a 4:3 screen. Oh well though, the hard drive space on the iPod classic is a great deal for everyone. I guess I'll wait around for the iPod touch to finally have 100+ gigs of space. That could be 4 or 5 years from now judging by how long it took Apple to go from a 15 gig hard drive iPod to a 160 gig hard drive iPod.

Well I couldn't be happier with the announcements. The Touch is exactly what I was hoping it would be. And I couldn't be happier with the pricing. I was expecting a lot higher prices. Now the big problem is, with the $200 drop in price on the iPhone, do I go ahead and get the iPhone or the Touch. This is very good pricing IMO. I'm not sure why folks are bitching, I think the entire product line is fantastic.

because anyone with a significant amount of music or video only have the option of a three year old design and video playback the size of postage stamp.

Which is still in the wrong aspect.

With all these posts, I doubt it will be read, but...

If you like this, great; I do too.

If you don't, that's fine as well, but it had better not be because of the capacity of the player.

Flash memory is more expensive. Hard drives cost less. People saying that they would rather use a HDD based iPod touch with a higher capacity at the same price do not know how the electronics work.

While it is true that a thicker iPod touch with a 80/160/other Gb HDcould sell for approxamatley the same price, there are two considerations that must be put in play.

While cheeper, hard drives have moving parts which suck batter life like none other. Flash storage drains batteries much slower. If Apple wanted to, they could have given the iPhone a larger HD. The problem is driving a Hard drive, and a screen that large and bright. It would have virtually no batery life whatsoever. IMHO, having a player that can play some or most of your movies and music for a good while is better than the ability to play all of your media for no time at all.

The other problem with giving the iPod touch / iPhone a large capacity is that Apple would like to maintain their position in all of the market segments that they have already entered. That said, giving the iPhone line a HD would put a murky smear on the value of the now "classic" iPod. Who the hell would buy somthing that is essentially feature stripped. It would be stupid.

i don't think it has notes yet
all the pictures of the iPhone show the Notes app with an icon on teh home screen, yeah? http://www.apple.com/iphone/gallery/index8.html

but the pics of the Touch don't have that icon anywhere (http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/). maybe it'll come a bit later - or maybe they think that'll bite into the iPhone's niche

Yeah, it seems odd because everyone was saying wifi and Safari would eat into the iPhone's niche. But instead, Notes was left out! :)

Regardless, I imagine the Touch will be hacked and Notes will be installed on it (in addition to Mail and the other stuff.)

To the people who were saying "they'll never do a phoneless iPhone, they'll never do wifi, the iPod is for multimedia not communication" and even stooping so low as to call people names for thinking so, I'd just like to say....

{nelson voice} HA-HAA!

The storage is a bit small, but that was to be expected. Those who need zillions of gigabytes (why?) weren't left out (told you they don't go backwards) so long as you don't mind the classic model. It's a fair choice *shrugs*

For me, with a 7GB collection - most of it crap I piled in for the sake of it just because the space was there - the 16GB model suits me down to the ground... looks excellent *buys*

Hey, here's something... look for cases on the store. Then filter down to the iPod touch - and LYAO :D

Oh, and one more thing -
The fatpod is real hahahahaha (actually I thought it looked quite good when he showed it, it just looks naff on a screen)

Ah, and I'm shocked at the price, it's not bad. I was expecting a lot more. The UK/US currency "conversion" is normal, it goes for everything, it's because of import duty and tax.

had forgotten

i had forgotten about the imminent debut of the new ipods and as i woke up today, there was an announcer from nhk using the new touch on tv.

i love that it is flash as i can stomach only one or two movies per watch anyway. if i add 12 gb of music on to that, it is perfect. cheers apple

Yes they do. It's not quantum physics we are talking about. Those that want higher capacity are more than willing to put up with less battery time. You seem to forget the dismal battery life earlier iPods had, especially using the batteries that Apple use. People were happy to put up with it then for the convenience of carrying around all their music. 2 hours of video was an acceptable trade-off back then because you had options.

Car journey? Airplane trip? Use plug-in power. If you need entertainment for long trips you are never far from a mains supply to recharge or use.

Thicker, larger (and better quality) battery, hard drive ... name your price. It would sell.

do it have a glass screen like the iphone? does it run osx? two important questions to me?

As far as I know, the answer to both questions is yes.
The touch is probably one of the highest margin products Apple sell. The R&D was absorbed by the iPhone, and there will be increased economies of scale by increasing orders for common iPhone/touch parts. In fact only the case (no problem) and a simplified logic board (single layer, rather than double in the iPhone) are to only unique components.

Apple releases and amazing pocket sized wi-fi enabled safari endowed cover flow multi-touch smokin hot ipod and people are bitching because it'll only hold 700 albums at any one time...

Hmmm...I saved money for this moment and now I'm not so sure. It's very true that I don't listen to all the songs (3700) on my ipod photo and I'm no where near to filling it up. I had used it to store files as well but I guess I could keep that old one as my backup and use this 16 gb for my regular use. How do I choose which songs...
Anyone know the realistic availability of the 32 gb flash drives? Am I looking at least another year?
Oh and very trivial but I noticed that the ipod remote for listening to the radio isn't listed as compatible with the ipod touch. Does that mean I can listen to the radio without it? I guess I'll have to wait until this thing ships to find out that answer.
In my plans I would have my new car and my new ipod and be happy...now if I can only get up the nerve to make that next step and actually buy the car (has the mp3 player jack built in) before my current one finally dies.

agree with you.

get the touch and use smart playlist or get the classic and don't.

me i'm in a quandry iphone or ipod touch!!!!!!!!!!!!

iPhone, it has more features. If you do not require them then Touch it is. :)

I have to say i'm dissapointed. I've been waiting for a few years for a full screen video iPod and now i really cannot use this one at all.

I have about 21GB on my 30GB iPod now, and i use it all the time. i listen/watch everything that is on there on a very regualr basis. I was hoping for a 30GB model. 16GB wouldn't even fit just my music.

Apple iPod product line has a giant gap. It jumps from 16GB to 80GB. one is way too small, for my needs and one is way too big. They need a mid-point.

I'm hoping they soon announce a newer HDD based touch iPod.

Hmm am gonna hold out for the iPhone. It has mail, notes, camera, scratch resistant back and all the touch ipod functions. Also with the new price slash, the british price, hopefully, won't be as slapping as before and i can have a phone and ipod in one instead of two separate devices.

Also the recent rumor of a 16GB 3G version coming to Europe makes it even more tempting to wait

In the meantime i'll probably just pick up a classic to replace 30 which i have to give away

Then I suggest contacting the memory makers and telling them to get cracking on larger flash chips at a cheaper price.

Actually I've been surfing around a little tonight and as crazy as it sounds for the first time I genuinely believe that Creative, Microsoft, Samsung, Sony and Archos staff, either directly or employed via PR agencies are posing as 'newbies' and are literally flooding the entire internet with crass dumb-ass teen style whining about needing at least 160Gigs of storage - just utterly discounting EVERYHING the Ipod touch is about becuase they just absolutely must carry around every song every made and every movie ever released at all times

Unbelievable...

do ANY of the new iPod models have built-in support for bluetooth headsets?

that was actually my most-wanted feature!........

do any of the new iPod models have built-in bluetooth for wireless headsets?

And does it support Bluetooth?

160+ gig hdd
Wireless video
bluetooth (for kb/mouse)
iPhone functions
iLife and iWork Mobile
maybe gps and a camera for good measure...

How hard could it be?

UNREAL -

Looks like 2nd or 3rd Gen Nano for me!

I know there isn't a native IM client on this thing, but would there be any way to access, say, AIM Express or something?

I'll wait.

Geez the iPod touch is a great idea. BUT....is 16gb the biggest compacity possible?? I mean it's an iPhone without the phone. I'm sure the iTunes Wi-Fi will be an update for the iPhone very shortly. I'd seriously consider getting one if it came in an 60 or 80gb model.
Oh well I guess they can't please everyone. I just won't be getting a new iPod:(
