If the iPod Touch can run Safari, do you think it can run Google Office. If so this new iPod Touch is a PDA and would be even more handy and functional.

To hell with capacity, multiple functions is where it's at. ;)

Google Map, etc... Hope its possible to acquire some sort of GPS. Apple is taking on the GPS in-car solutions on the market. Imagine you can use Google Map to get the route you have in mind, load some albums and video and you are set for a road trip. Who needs 160 when it is limited in function.

Wish it was available today. :(

So THAT'S the plan

I just figured out why there isn't a HD based iPod touch.

In the rarefied atmosphere of Steve Jobs iPods are for music and short videos only. Those wishing to take a vacation load of movies on the road are supposed to own the 160GB AppleTV and only visit places with HDTVs to plug them in to. Of course in his universe nobody rips songs using Apple Lossless (they buy them from iTunes), nobody records TV shows off the air (they buy them from iTunes) nobody rips movies from DVDs or downloads torrents (they buy them from iTunes) and, of course, nobody uses their iPod to store data.

I think Apple's removal of FireWire from the iPod wasn't about saving a few cents in production costs it was clearly intended to send the message that the iPod is NOT an external HD. Up until then people were doing all sorts of "evil" things like backing up their home directories and even creating bootable backups of their computers. Apple needed to stomp out such deviant behavior before it really caught on.

Personally I like the new lineup. If money wasn't an issue I'd order a Touch today. I think I'll ask for a nano for Christmas. I'm spending way too much time swapping the songs on my shuffle.

I say it's pretty damn decent. Not everyone has 1,000,000,000 music files and tens of thousands of movies. I still have yet to fill my 1st gen iPod (which, yes, I still use). I have never watched movies on it (can't) and have been totally satisfied. Nothing Apple ever releases is BAM! in terms of tech specs right off the bat, unless it is a Mac pro-type...in which case size is not an issue. I agree with those who have said that form should come first. THAT is what gets people hooked, not "I have a 160 GB HD."

Other than that, this is what i've been waiting for: an iPod that I can justify buying because it has decent features ans is NOT a phone at the same time. I can't stand always having all of my eggs in one basket. Now I could read my news on this thing (for free) at school, look up what I need, and i'm sure at some point (if not already) iCal and address book support. Perfect!

Someone mentioned a while ago that the iPhone's fast, glamorous GUI probably necessitated the use of flash memory solely from a speed standpoint. It looks like that was true. I would've thought maybe Apple could've utilized some kind of hybrid HDD setup with enough flash to keep the snappy UI but with storage of HDD, but no dice. I could probably just fit my music onto on of these, but with a screen like that, not having room for movies is criminal. Alas I love the device, but I cannot see myself buying one, too bad. My 5.5 gen can rest easier now at night

Well

Between a Hard-drive and a touch-screen the iPod touch would have probably had a much shorter battery life, not to mention far more fragile. I think keeping it flash based was a good move on Apple's part.

Its not like its only 512mb or anything.

People complain too much. If you dont want one then dont buy one. You are typing on a computer so store your movies on there and then sync them with the ipod when you want to watch them. OR are you going to be stranded needing 10 movies on your ipod. its not supposed to be a tv+dvd player. its a music and video player/internet browser. Sync it and quit complaining.

How relevant will the WiFi really be? When youre home, you have your computer. Its not like the iPhone where you can at least use EDGE. Just saying because of the iPhone price drop, my options are open big time.

There's WIFI in a lot of places:
Coffee shops, City / downtown wide ( i.e., Toronto has one ), Pubs etc.

People complain too much.

Yea... there's like a 30 page whine-fest about Apple lowering the iPhone price by $200 :p

Dear Apple,
You are a bunch of incompetent retards. I can't get one of these because of my music collection size which is bordering on the 60GB size. And I want my ENTIRE collection with me in my car as I drive around town and do my job. Thanks Apple for not a damn thing.

What The World Needs Now Is Another Ipod Recesssed Headphone Jack Like I Need A Hole In My Head!!

Look its someone who is apologizing for Apple based on something they don't know squat about. You do realize that the hard drive is hardly touched because of the cache built into the iPod. Right?

Wow. I hope you are joking. If your finances are that bad, you should spend your money elsewhere.
it's all a matter of priorities
some people think that paying bills and rent and buying food and water is important
and some of us (and like bcooper0125 i'm one of them) think that new apple kit is more important

"man cannot live on bread alone" but some months, it seems i manage to live on apples alone :D

I'm sorry to see all this griping! if 16GB is too little go and buy the iPod Classic. It has a new interface which is pretty nice.
I'm getting one of these little wonders ASAP. Gripe all you like I'm happy with the new line up.

stop moaning buy it or buy a zune

I don't need a Zune I need a NEW iPod that can fit my entire collection....along with movies in widescreen. I can't have that because Apple is being a [bleep].

That's because it works for you. If it didn't you'd be the one bitching right now.

My two bits...

This may sound loopy, but if I could write notes on it on the go, the iTouch would be a much more desirable purchase for me.

It works for me as a "portable" means of carrying media from your homebound Mac, or if you want to transfer/carry stuff from friend's Macs, and I love the WiFi web feature, but it doesn't account completely for creating data and info "on the go", and to me that has to include creating text when and as needed - for example, notes to relate to a change in the calendar. Given the price, I would think that that should be a necessary part of the iTouch as part of the idea of being "on the go" and a conveniently-sized means of accomplishing it.

yeah thanks apple for 160gig metal ipod with coverflow and video! you bastards

Well I couldn't be happier with the announcements. The Touch is exactly what I was hoping it would be. And I couldn't be happier with the pricing. I was expecting a lot higher prices. Now the big problem is, with the $200 drop in price on the iPhone, do I go ahead and get the iPhone or the Touch. This is very good pricing IMO. I'm not sure why folks are bitching, I think the entire product line is fantastic.

I'm seriously impressed by the announcements today, and I'm happy with the decision Apple made for the touch, going with flash instead of HD.

I can't seem to find out if the touch has a notes application (like on the iPhone) that is suitable for some writing when disconnected, like a journal on trips? (not novels or anything)?

And how is the keyboard implementation, is it something that is fairly comfortable to use? It doesn't have to be perfect, just pretty good.

If this one thing checks out, I'll probably order one.
