Some questions:

Is it obvious that this iPod has OS X built in? Could iPhone apps be transfered with some kind of (fast?) hack to iPod touch? I'm thinking Mail and Google Maps. Will the apps developed for iPhone (NES and so) run here?

And, do you know what the song from the new iPod ad is? :D

Who's complaining about music storage? did I miss something?

Its the VIDEO STUPID.
Are you kidding?

If the battery only plays 5 hours of video from a flash drive, it would probably play 1 or 2 hours from a hard drive. 1 OR 2 HOURS OF VIDEO PLAYBACK IS NOT HELPFUL. YOU WOULD BE BLUBBERING 10X AS HARD ABOUT THAT IF THEY HAD RELEASED A 160GB IPOD TOUCH WITH 2 HOURS VIDEO PLAYBACK.

Holy crap.

yeah thanks apple for 160gig metal ipod with coverflow and video! you bastard

Hard drive size +
coverflow +
Video +
lacking a widescreen -^10

My next iPod was going to allow me to do video....the original iPod with Video's screen is too dang small. A widescreen iPod would be perfect. Too bad I can't have my music and movies on the same device because of some odd justification by Apple.
Simply put the hard drive size is a deal killer on the iPod touch and the lack of a widescreen is a deal killer on the new 160GB. Again retarded. Why the heck could they not have merged both?

That brings up an interesting question: what is the optimal encoding? How large a file for a standard 2-hour movie?

I've been playing around with HandBrake in advance of the Touch. The following gives me excellent results-

- 480 x 320 resolution (autocropped if source aspect ratio is different)
- H264 single pass encoding
- 500 kbps bitrate

This results in files of 600 MB or so (obviously depends on length of movie.) So on a 16GB iPod, that's quite a few movies.

400 kbps is also quite watchable, but then I start noticing artifacts more.

Just Ordered My 16gb! :D :D :D

I have been waiting for one sense may when my parents got me an iPod and I returned it in hope for exactly this. the capicity is a little low but its not bad.

Oh who am I kidding? I'll probably get the 160.

LOL, after all that navel-gazing the truth finally comes out... ;)

Anyway, if you have an iPhone then the Touch is redundant. But if you have a 5G for example, then the Touch is not redundant at all. Or buy both a Classic and a Touch! ;)

I can't seem to find out if the touch has a notes application (like on the iPhone) that is suitable for some writing when disconnected, like a journal on trips? (not novels or anything)?
i don't think it has notes yet
all the pictures of the iPhone show the Notes app with an icon on teh home screen, yeah? http://www.apple.com/iphone/gallery/index8.html

but the pics of the Touch don't have that icon anywhere (http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/). maybe it'll come a bit later - or maybe they think that'll bite into the iPhone's niche

+1. We don't know for sure, but look at the Palm LifeDrive- it was much laggier than other Palm PDA's.

Someone mentioned a while ago that the iPhone's fast, glamorous GUI probably necessitated the use of flash memory solely from a speed standpoint. It looks like that was true. I would've thought maybe Apple could've utilized some kind of hybrid HDD setup with enough flash to keep the snappy UI but with storage of HDD, but no dice.

not enough GBs

16 GBs??? thats it?
considering i have 20 GBs of music and that i would want to put movies/shows on my iPod, i would really have to cut back on the songs i would put on my ipod.. that sucks

That's because it went from flash memory to RAM. Imagine if it had gone to a storage technology that was half again as fast?

madmax media = mad about something

Jeez... what a wasted opportunity by Apple... I would've only bought the ipod touch if it had AT LEAST 30 gb... after all the hype that was going on, you would've though a little bit more memory would be on hand. Im goin for the 80 gb, only $250! what a deal :D

!

Is there no-one here from the UK who thinks maybe (just maybe) £260 is a little bit pricey for 16gb?

That = 525.094 US Dollars!

I must be the only brit here.

I don't know what people are complaining about, like, do you honestly need every song in your library on it at once? I have a 1 gig iPod Nano (I know) and I barely fill it up so 8 gigs is a lot for me, let alone 16.

I can't believe it though, I'm in Canada and I've been dying for an iPhone but they won't sell them here so this is perfect cause I didn't really care about the phone part lol!

Maybe battery life has something to do with it seeing as how it does have a wide screen display with multi-touch. If Apple had released the iPod touch with a hard drive but it only got 2 hours of battery life then the same people would still be crying.

This is AWSOME!

I'm definitely getting one. Weather it be an 8GB or a refurbed 16GB I'm not sure yet.

Stop whining about the Flash space. First with a HDD battery life would suck so bad. I mean look at the battery life of a "Classic" vs the Touch. The Touch's large touch screen and the touch interface shortens the batteries life.

8 or 16GB is fine for MOST people. I have 2 full length movies and ~10 music videos on my 5G (30GB) with around 200 songs and its around 1.5-2GB used.

If you have >16GB of video/music and you want the touch just keep your current iPod and just alternate. I'm sure you don't need ALL those videos on at the same time. And now you can probably relay some of the shorter ones off to YouTube ;)

Sorry if any of this is repetitive. I didn't read all 20+ pages. :apple: :) :apple:

No u arent, ive seen plenty of brits here who have said exactly the same thing you just did. And I agree, that is a little pricey.

I haven't read all of these, but does it have the Mail application? If no Mail program, along with the measly 16GB, then it's a no-go.

How can it NOT have Mail? This would have been the perfect device....
