I think the iPhone/iPodTouch work only with H.264-encoded media, correct?

So if they use that codec, you're okay. But if it needs some other codec plug-in, I think you're not.

No, you don't have to use that codec. I just put 300 and wargames on my iphone and its encoded in mp4 using regular mpg with handbrake.

for me the question remains......do I really want an all in one device like the iPhone? Lets face it, for the common man - it's an awfully expensive phone. Cell phones get lost, broken, dropped, stolen, scratched, tossed around, etc... Going to a concert or party? your cell phone is on vibrate in your pocket. Do you bring your iPod to the party and concert too? No, it stays where things are safe. Going mountain biking? HEY !!! don't forget your $350 iPhone.

I would need some kind of free replacement insurance policy on my iPhone if I ever get one.

Here is my solution to that. Don't use it all the time. Sounds stupid but it works.

I opened a second line with att for $10 extra. I have the iphone on one line and my SLVR L7 on the other. That way when I want some phone to run to the game and don't want to break my iphone I grab my SLVR. If I go to a seminar or out of town or to the store I grab my iphone. If I need web and ipod that is when I take it. Works out quit nice.

Lets face it, the iphone is easily dropped. I have mine and my wifes in rubber cases which helps out perfectly against drops. Stays in the hand. Hell just yesterday I took my wifes iphone out of the case to clean it up a bit and it slipped right out of my freakin hand and landed on the counter. About a 8" drop. No damage but that could have been concrete you know.

No kidding

first I belongs to the silent majority (I think) who don't really care about thickness that much.

second, You put too many guess here. we don't even know how thick it will be with HDD. and we don't know how much battery power it will need. I would love to see some reasonable numbers rather than "i guess it will be too thick, etc..."

Do some of these guys go around saying, "mine is thinner than yours" or something? Come on -- 2 extra mm is a whole lot more space wise (over an 8mm base) and is this somehow "too" thick? You get 16x the storage for a trivial amount of extra thickness; seems to be a no brainer as tradeoffs go. How thick can you get?

I have seen many iPods MUCH thicker than this and thought they were no less sexy. This is Apple we are talking about, not Dell. They would have no trouble making it sexy.

As to battery power, people are guessing wildly here, ignoring the fact that the Touch lacks a PHONE as if THAT was an infinitesmal suck of juice.

Nice

Right, my 1st gen Nano has a few light scratches on it. That's enough justification for getting one of these, isn't it? :)

16GB doesn't sound great, but I seldom struggle with the 4GB on my Nano, so this should be just fine. Sweet! :apple:

I'm in the same boat

I am so sick of hearing how 8 GB's could not possible be enough storage for people. In my iTunes library I only have 113 songs and I occasionally like to watch videos on the go. So 8 GB's for me and others is fine. I'm ecstatic that it only comes in 8 and 16 GB's as anything higher would just be a waste.

I use my iPod mostly for listening to podcasts, audio books and if on a long trip an occasional movie. It has 30 gig's of space but I have never used over 10 gig's of it. I routinely clean everything off of it because I know I won't be listening to it and it is just more stuff to go through.

The new touch is exactly right for me but my current iPod is doing just fine. I plan on picking one up for my wife though. Her iPod is older and in need of an update more than mine.

Hopefully by the time my iPod needs to be updated (or dies) they'll have a GPS built in to the touch. I would also like to see a built in microphone for taking audio notes for myself. Neither of those are deal breakers for me though because I could get attachments to do both if I really need them.

Well for all those HD space naysayers. Think of a user like myself. I have 60gb of music and 700GB of videos. Sure I can put a video on the ipod and watch it then delete it after I am done and do it again but that is a pain in the arss. I would love to slap a huge amount of stuff on there and watch them at my liesure. That is why I have to go with the 160gb classic. If I am going to swap out videos I am just going to keep using my iphone as it has SPEAKERS which quit frankly are the best thing in the world. I hate headphones.

Okay. Thanks. I think my stuff is probably in MP4, as well, since I have been choosing "iPod Video" as the format when converting.

Problems (with the iPod Touch):
1. No Mail? No Weather? Major fumbles, IMO.
2. No camera? It's minor, I admit, but it sure would've been a nice touch.
3. The chrome back has got to go.
4. Both devices (iPhone and iPod touch) need an AIM client.

But how effective would weather be without EDGE? I admit I check the weather on my iPhone a great deal, but that is because I can get to it anywhere via EDGE.

Same with mail, to be honest, though I can understand "catching up" during some downtime near a WiFi hotspot like a coffee shop or airport.

And the iPhone camera is lame, so no loss there. :)

As for the chrome back, mine is in a case that protects the back, so no worries for me.

any idea on when cases will be available for this baby? Cuz, i'm clumsy and I definitely do not want to drop my Touch. Hopefully I can get another padded DLO case for it for when I work out.

also, on the page where it says, "Included in the box", it says, "Stand". What kind of stand are they talking about? Will it be a dock to connect a usb cable? Or is it,well...just a stand?

Wifi is everywhere in this town. It's full of engineers and college students, so all the local lunch spots have wifi, the UAH campus is covered, most hotels are covered, my house is covered, and even a few retail outlets are covered (some by nearby restaurants).

It's better than my KRZR camera. :p

Yeah, but I hate having to buy a $30+ case just to preserve the resale value of this thing.

If I had to guess, I'd say it'll be something like this:

http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/gallery/index10.html

Notice the little "clip" at the bottom. It's not in the other "at an angle" photos, so I'd guess that its inclusion was intentional in that photo.

I'm quite surprised at how many disappointed people there are. As many people have pointed out before....do you really want all your songs at one time? 8GB or 16GB is still quite a lot of music and you can still have a few videos on it. If its not enough...go the classic?

ooooohhh...ok cool. I didnt even see that before. I am probably not going to use that because I am not going to put my $400 Touch on display for my roommates to fondle and break lol thank for the info though!

Despite what everyone else is saying... I'll say this:

I think the iPod Touch is what I truly have been waiting for. Since the iPhone came out, I drooled over the functionality of it but, I didn't want a really expensive cell phone with only one carrier to choose from. Also, with the iPhone, you have to be locked into a plan or else the phone has NO FUNCTIONS AT ALL... can't even use the iPod on the iPhone unless you activate it. I always found myself saying "Man, I wish they'd just make an iPod like the iPhone and I'd totally get one." Well, needless to say, yesterday is when my dreams came true and Apple delivered. What I was not expecting was wifi or Safari so those 2 things are definitely a bonus to me. Also, the ability to zoom in on Photos and such looks really amazing. I always hated having photos on my iPod because the screen was so small and the photos looked like damn thumbnails and you couldn't zoom in to see the detail.

I still have my 30GB iPod but, I have ordered the 'Touch and I can't wait to get it... this is going to be the best iPod ever!!! On a side note, I had a 4GB Nano that I loved and back then, I wished they made an 8GB version and now I'll have even more at 16GB. Sure it's not the same as my 30GB but, I throw a bunch of useless music on it that I never listen to just to fill it up but, maybe this time I'll be a little pickier about which songs I put on the iPod and I'll probably only wanna put music on that has album art... hehe... I'm weird like that.

It was marketed as holding your entire MUSIC-collection. Video and audio are consumed in totally different ways. You shuffle through your music, and that's when large selection makes sense. you do NOT shuffle through your videos.

Either way, it still makes the Touch a bust. 16 GB is not enough for a considerable amount of the potential buyers to carry even their music library around.

explain how they would get higher capacity devices into such a small form factor, and retain the battery capacity they currently have.
if the technology aint there, apple cant use it, your asking for somthing that dosnt exist yet.

Simple. Do not retain the form factor. People that are here wishing the Touch had bigger storage capacity aren't saying they'd want it on the same exact for factor. The're saying they'd be ok with a thicker/heavier device that offered lare capacity and accommodated a larger battery.

If anyone noticed... I updated my signature to reflect my awaited iPod Touch and I also threw Mac OS X 10.4.11 in there as well because I'm sure it will be out soon and I won't have to remember to change it... hehe.

And my library is about 5gigs. So can Touch hold my entire collection? Yes it can, with loads of room to spare. What exactly is this supposed to prove? That different people have different libraries? If the Touch can't hold your library, they have other players that can.

Of course there are people out there that have massive collections (larger than yours even). Does that mean that if Apple markets the 160GB Classic with slogan "hold everything", they are actually lying, because people with 200+GB libraries can't put their entire library on it? There are ALWAYS people who will not be satisfied with the offered product. You can't please everyone.

That's just silly. It's supposed to prove that catering to only the portion of the potential buyers with small collections or the time and patience to resync constantly and not mind not having something you might on a whim wish you could listen to is a horrible business decision. If Apple is now under the policy of saying there are better media players out there for great numbers of people instead of saying they have the best ones through and through, they must have fired their marketing people who built the iPod arm of the company to be their most profitable one and hired instead people with your mindset. No wonder the stock is tanking ever since the announcement.

Just two little details:
1. you can't see song lyrics stored in tags in the iPhone like you do in a 5G iPod, can you? I fear you won't be able to do so in the new touch :(
2. There is no search function (like in iPod 5G) in the iPhone, am I wrong? I'd like to see this in the Touch... It's really cool make some search and start playing the search results!

Yes, I do. And no, won't be going the Classic, which is now officially antiquated, or the Touch, which is lame in the very purpose a larger screen is for, which makes it just a flashy gadget for people too cheap for an iPhone. Won't be going either way. Will keep my money in my pocket instead of in the pockets of Apple's shareholders. Which I'm sure they'll make up in part for with all the early adopters. But the other part of that revenue they're not making, which isn't negligible, is the part that makes this line a bad business decision.

Who needs SUVs? Most people only drive by themselves most of the time. And if you need to take 8 people, you can just take 3, drop them at their destination, then go back and get the next 3. You whiners.

Who needs a top-of-the-line product to fit their needs at a premium price? You want space? Get this large SUV with cloth seats, AM radio, 2-wheel drive, manual transmission, a 4-cylinder engine and lap-only seatbelts. Or you can get this Chevy Aveo with leather, CD changer, ABS, sunroof, airbags all around, and super-efficient hybrid powertrain. See? You have something for everybody... Whiners.

Sheesh.

i agree

I have been trying to figure out which one to get and what you have said is what i thought of a little bit ago and made my decision so much easier. I'd never throw the iPod Touch into my saddle bag on my road bike. Or take it to a concert...esp. an outdoor concert.

Sheesh.

That will waste a lot of gas, and the Chevy Aveo is ugly...unlike the iPod Touch.

Anyways...I have had only limited use with the iPhone (one of my friends has it) so I have a question. Sometimes, I have "clammy" palms lol, so will this affect my ability to use the touchscreen efficiently? i.e. Scrolling down my list of songs, etc.

I think you're completely wrong. 16GB will allow you to to store a hours and hours of music, as well as 20-30 movies. That makes it a legitimate audio/video media player. Just because it can't store 800 days worth of music and 200 movies doesn't make it useless.
