One thing I am surprised to see has not been mentioned yet is internet browsing. This is where the iPod touch has one of the biggest advantages over the PSP. Browsing is a complete nightmare on the PSP, but on the iPod touch, it is simply amazing, and probably the best internet browser on anything other than a proper computer.

Your right, the only bad thing is that a PSP's browser supports flash, while Touch's doesnn't. I hope Apple fixes that soon. I used to have a wm6 pocket pc, and its browser was just like a touch's, only with flash.

just get an ipod, once jailbroken it is so awesome. BUT if you dont jailbreak it, its pretty much a piece of ****... why dont you just get a Fat psp off someone? theres no dif really... except the weight, but a real man wants the heavy one XD

No it doesn't........The PSP browser definately doesn't support flash.

The CPU speed of the PSP at max is 333 mhz.....no where near what you guys are saying. The recorded speed of the CPU of the iPod touch is 400 Mhz. Though it was recently bumped to 412 mhz in the last update. Just google what I said it's there somewhere.

Go to the Apple store and play with an iPod touch, then decide. If your more into games, then get the PSP. But if your more into music, then there really isnt a point since you need a memory card to put music and videos on the PSP.

So it all comes down to whether you wanna play games or just listen to music.

Excellent advice. Got a 16 GB i-touch for Christmas, it simply rocks. I have a GMail account, so with Safari, I have e-mail when I want to be in touch.
Absolutely first class product!;):apple:

I got a PSP and i have to say... its not as good as the iPod Touch. Its good for games and MABEY videos but nothing else. The internet also sucks ass. Get the Touch, i wish i did.

Yes it does support flash but it uses Flash Player 6. Things like YouTube however, require the higher version.

Meh, I read from another source that when they tested the speed they only got 400 MHz, but they think its cause they tested it without the cpu doing anything so maybe it was cause the CPU was at rest. I'm on my touch so I'll look it up when I get back to my dorm.

Your right, Apple has actually locked part of the processor, it only performs 400mhz, but contains a 620mhz processor. It will use the processor later on, like after some update.

the ipod touch is not made for games. Even though u can run apps such as nes or nintendo games, you will never get that same "gaming experience". I love my music and for me, the ipod touch is the sexiest player around. However, if i wanted to play games, i take the psp slim.

Ipod touch
music: the best
games:meh

Psp:
Music: decent
games: excellent

I think iPod Touch will also increase its sales by adding external storage. I hope apple adds a graphics card.

Well despite the misinformation and other things, as an owner of both they both have limitations, both of which can be overcome somewhat by hacking them (which offers you the penalty of bricking or reverting for both).

Some people here seem to be far too pro-iPod, the Archos is a much better web browser, movie viewer (and recorder BTW), and has 30+ GB of storage so all your PSP criticisms apply to the iPOD touch in that respect. Also like the PSP the Archos can stream live video to it, while the iPod currently can't, and the PSP actually has Location Free Player TV in Europe and ASIA (North America is too DRM-infested to allow us such beauty).

Like Adras earlier I own both I bought the PSP shortly after launch (after the initial price dropped and dead pixel issue was overcome) for it's great internet browsing at the time, and I got the iPod touch this Xmas as a gift from my truely pro-Apple dad, who likes them so much he bought the company... (I believe the gift was to get me to finally own an Apple product ;) ).

Anywhoo, although the purchase has been made, I think I should point out for others who might stumble on this like I did for other info, that there are many major drawbacks in the iPod touch compared to other player/browsers/etc out there (especially without hacking);
Like no direct downloading of RSS feeds, pictures and video from feeds on the web, unlike most other players including the PSP; also right now (prior to next update) no drive mode for the iPod Touch; if you're not on a MAC then iTunes is a heck of a resource hog compared to other synch apps; ipodTouch will not find SSIDs which are blank, it doesn't even know they exist (this is also a 'feature' of most MACs) I noticed this on Xmas day when I tried to log in to an open wifi near the TTC that my PSP had no trouble detecting it and logging into and immediately downloading netcasts from twit.tv , pixelcorps, the hour on CBC and Meet the Press (all RSS feeds on the PSP). Also the ipod prefers to jump around on connections even if you have it selected and directed to stay in touch with the one you want. Some websites also cannot be accessed that can be on other mini browsers (never had a one that my PocketPC couldn't access other than YouTube which the iPT has it's own portal for [won't access content directly either]); also the iPT default all browsing to mobile/portable site locations like NFL.com, etc. Games on the iPOD suck, and anyone using the GBA as an example doesn't get that GBA games suck to begin with, while if you're hacking the PSP can be hacked to play MAME, NES and PS1 games in addition to it's own library (still hate the mediocre analogue stick though, but it's better than iPOD or GBA controls). You cannot replace the batteries to add more time if you don't have a charging option.

The PSP isn't without it's faults too, it cannot support higher levels of flash as noted, it runs out of memory on many sites (which even the firmware updates didn't help [go to digg and it dies halfway through, and forget opening many windows on busy locations]), it is a little slower at browsing too (but that's like saying a man with one leg blown off at the knee is faster than one at the hip); it does rely on memory sticks (which can support up to 16GB FYI to the knob who said only 4 [I was thinking about ading 8 GB for $150 when I got my Xmas gift which made it redundant, but at $150 for a PSP + $150 for 8GB of memory stick it's in the iPOD's price range]), although it also means you can swap out memory sticks for more content (and it had access to the UMD on top of that [which to some is a negative and for other a positive]); the PSP does churn through it's old battery technology faster than the PSP which may mean you NEED those extra batteries sooner. The PSP is bulkier, even in it's slimer model, although the PSP always fit in my shirt pocket even with my Armour and flip cover adding to it's dimensions. BTW, the only people who looked at me sideways while watching it were people who look that way at iPod touch users as well either out of envy or because they are luddites. Most adults appreciate the beautiful picture of things like TopGear being displayed.

But the most killer "they don't have it" app in the iPod's favour is iTunes, which is great if you listen to podcasts, otherwise it's a DRM infection as bad as anything Sony or M$ would've come up with since you're still mainly better off buying CDs or DVD-A/SACDs, especially if you have an ear for music. But for podcasts, RSS isn't as handy on the PSP because it's not automatic, whereas now with the iPOD I just leave my PC on overnight running itunes and Folding and in the morning I have all my podcasts (video and audio) ready for my train-ride to work.
Archos does have an aggregator, but it's not quite as handy, but pretty close for podcasts.

For gaming the PSP is King, for Websurfing the iPOD is damn fine, but for both audio and video playback the Archos beats both of the, and surfs pretty well too, just missing out on the game play functionality, but unlike either of the others the archos allow you to record directly to the unit without a PC.

Anywhoo, personally I like both my PSP and my iPOD, but I use them for what they were meant for, gaming and video watching on the PSP , and podcast listening/viewing and websurfing on the iPOD. However if I was spending my money from the start now with neither in my posession I would buy and Archose 605-30GB without question, and that would be my recommendation to anyone else.

This is like the Mac vs PC debate (as if a Mac isn't a personal computer) which totally ignored all the benifits of Linux, this thread focused on the two options as if either was the 'best' at doing everything, whereas the only true kings here are PSP gaming and iPod's iTunes. the players as media devices are both terribly limited, especially by their respective master's DRM etc, and they only even come close to shining when they been freely hacked.

Anywhoo thus ends my rant as an owner of both haked units and still preferring the Archos I had my hands on in November while initially contemplating a $200 8GB memory stick.

We're looking at a music player here, not a computer. I highly doubt a graphics processor/external storage is even something Apple has considered. If you're looking for something of that calibre you'd had better for Mac World for the rumoured subnotebook.

Sorry, what!? The GBA has loads of great games, and it's best games are much better than anything than the PSP will ever have. Let me guess, your main criteria for a good game are the graphics.

P.S. Look at the back of your iPod touch. Does it say iPOD, or iPod?

How about... NES emulator on the iPod Touch! Theres some games!

Just kidding... I realize that people are over Mario Brothers 1 and Pac Man :p

But seriously, I would get an iPod Touch. I have tons of friends who bought the PSP with intent to use it with videos and music, and none of them ever did. They said it was too much of a hassle and the PSP itself was a small hassle to carry around. Heres why the iPod is better (if you are not into games mostly)... (and beside the awesomely cool touch screen)... iTunes!! Simplicity is key, and it doesn't get simpler than iTunes syncability.

Sure they are chum.

1 of the 3, and BAD graphics is definitely a criteria for not playing a game.
The GBA doesn't have enough power to give you complex games, so it loses out on 2 of the 3 criteria, especially when trying to emulate other systems or use MAME. I've owned both, and the GBA is ancient and weak, the DS isn't bad, but the only part of the triumvirate that the GBA games have is fun/replayability, and that available on most gaming devices, or else they won't be used.

Show me a complex story 3D game on the GBA that even comes close to the dozens on the PSP. Heck even in 2D either of the Midway or Capcom classic collections on the PSP with their dozen titles and wifi head-to-head gaming have more value than any single title on the GBA, and those two titles would be considered 'low tech' on the PSP.

If I wanted quirky cute 2D games I'd play one of my many old Nintendo 'Game & Watch's from the 1970s. :p

P.S. Look at the back of your iPod touch. Does it say iPOD, or iPod?

As if that matters or changes anything else, oh no Caps, you zinged me there chuck.

Since you're so defensive about the GBA why not post these killer games you think are so awesome.

Yep, that's the primary 'killer app' they still have over most others. Archos has an OK aggregator, but if Sony ever got their head out of their butts and made a solid aggregator / point-of-sale solution anywhere near similar (even with just netcasts and sony-only music) they'd have sold alot more PSPs as media devices, instead of people just thinking it's games only, which is what I thought until a friend showed me his (which he bought for gaming).

Sony tries to sell their portables, and the silly MIO instead of selling the great added features of the PSP, because even to the Sony Execs, it's just a gaming device, I don't think I've ever seen one of their ads tout the web browsing, and the video/audio playback is mentioned maybe once a year or in passing in a firmware update.

It's because of the size and iTunes that I find myself using the iPod more, but I still miss some of the features of the PSP like being able to save media to disk better from the web, and a solid action game (not like reversi or cards) while you're waiting for a train or flight is kinda nice too.

IMO if they added that, and made it easier to transfer files without iTunes (and allowed charging on Win2K machines), then I'd have al I ever wanted in a portable media device (I don't need the Archos' record feature, prefer that on the PC anyways).
