needs to be taken from a possitive angle (ie, both ipod moved above the focus of the camera) a negative, right, and left while camera is facing straight...

no one has done that yet...

Thanks,
Arisian

Uh No..

That user took a shot that was straight on, and that is the most valuable picture.

Every LCD on the market has limited viewing angles, and if you get enough of an angle on the screen the image will distort.

The problem with the week 36-37 iPods was that the image was distorted while looking at it straight on...

This picture is a perfect example of how much of an improvement week 38 is over 36-37

Exactly. I took my picture comparing the two straight ahead, because that's BASICALLY how you're going to be looking at the thing...Isn't it?

I don't see the benefit in taking a photo of the screen from a bunch of off angles, unless that's how you hold the thing when you're watching it. Every screen looks bad/different/weird from some off strange angle.

Thanks Hecklerdanny, your week 38 is the first in any picture I've ever seen posted of an iPod Touch with a decent screen. Every single other one I've seen until now posted on the internet has looked like the bottom one with atrocious contrast and brightness, even if it didn't have the 'negative black'.

Much appreciate it.

:)not trying to argue. the picture you took is of the middle of the two ipods together thus the one on the bottom is as if you are looking at it at at 15 degrees off true and the on on the top is -15 degrees off true (estimated). I see there is a difference, a vast difference of course, however, I just would like to see them taken at the same angle, distance, and lighting to really compare. Since the viewing angle from the top vs the bottom is different on LCD's I would like them taken from different angles to see, does that make sense? I pointed out that my previous post was confusing however, you guys decided to pick it apart nonetheless.

Anyways, I will take a few pictures tonight from a more scientific approach since you are correct (LCD viewing angle, etc etc...)

Thanks,
Arisian

sorry if that was offensive, I really wasn't trying to be offensive.

week: 38
screen issue: nope!
sound hissing: nope!
box art: that girl in white dress.

Just to let everyone know, I am typing this on my touch! Its so exciting! Everything is working great...no screen issue (trust me, if batman begins works on it fine, anything will!) I havent heard any hissing so that's definitely good. Go buy a week 38!!:)

I just spoke with Apple and my iPod that just shipped today from the Apple Store is a week 38 model. I will update on quality when I get the iPod some time next week. I just want to say that while I was speaking with Apple, the guy appeared to flat out deny the fact that there was a problem with the display on the iPod Touch. He told me that they would have been notified immediately if there was such a problem. I told him that both reviewers and customers who had received early models had been reporting these problems over the internet for the past few days. He seemed to be pretty adamant about the fact that he did not believe anything was wrong with the screen. I found it fairly strange and even told him that certain iPhone owners were now reporting the same problem. Again, he told me that he would know if there was any sort of display issue with the iPod Touch. Very strange...

It really depends on whom you get. Also barking at them that there is a problem really doesnt help. You should ask them to take it in their notes and tell them that your product is defective and that you want to return it. If they havent heard anything, they havent heard anything and there is no point in arguing with them. He's probably right about their policy and the phone cust. services reps probably havent heard anything. (alot of them are college students who do it for extra money).

also, on a different point. did apple ever really officially state anything beause the WP article was some other guy saying apple knew about the issue, but they havent actually... PUBLICLY admitted anything. I'm sure the same would be true for their chain of command and communications.

thoughts?

I didn't try to argue with him. I just tried to point out to him that this was a problem that should be talked about within the Apple Customer service department soon. I'm rather surprised that after a few days of these problems being reported on the internet, in media reviews and (I suppose) to Apple as well, that not even a "We're looking in to it." statement has been released.

:D:D:D

......huh?

Your pic has one ipod on top of the other. A good test is when you take two separate pics and swap the two ipods to really see the difference. On my Week37, the negative black goes away when I'm looking at the screen slightly from below the ipod, but it is there from the center of the ipod and above.

Your test tells us nothing.

bns: horrible test as well.

My test tells you nothing? You can't see a difference? Looking at those two iPods, you couldn't pick one out that looks better than the other?

I took two iPods, one good, and one bad, and put them next to each other, and took a photo of them. It's not scientific...One screen looks better than the other one...Geez.

mine is week 37 from best buy and its not horrible, but its still got problems... you should make sure yours doesnt have issues...

Yeah, I need to watch some more dark content and I don't think youtube is a good source since those videos can look bad on the best monitors. What is something good I can download from itunes that i can check it out on. I'm a pretty serious HD tv guy and I thought my screen looked pretty dang great when i was playing with it just now. The Silence of the Lambs clip from youtube was dark, but I didn't think it was any darker than it should have been. Thoughts?

WEEK NUMBER: 38
SCREEN PROB none
SOUND HISS: none
IPT BOX ART: Corinne Bailey Rae

Online order / engraved-- arrived this morning. Scenes with lots of blacks / shadows look fine. Nothing like what's being depicted in the images people have uploaded of bad screens.

On 9/14/07 I picked up...
16GB
Week #:37
Screen Problem: Oh yeah
Sound Hiss: Kind of but not noticeable when music is playing
Box Art: Corinne Bailey Rae

But then I exchanged it on 9/21/07 for...
16GB
Week #: 37
Screen Problem: No
Sound Hiss: No
Box Art: Macy Gray

The difference was night and day between the two. The Jay Z cover was a sea of shimmering green on the first iPod; now it looks just right. On the old iPod, dark scenes were lumps of shimmering greens and blacks. With the exchanged iPod I see all the details I was missing.

I was ambivalent before the exchange. I kept thinking, "Well, is it really that bad? How much better could a non-defective screen look?" Significantly better, as it turns out.

Any news on transfer times? According to the ilounge review, the Touch took twice as long compared to other iPods to transfer 5GB of data. The Touch took about 16-17 minutes whereas the Classic only took about 8.
