Apple is in a slow fall...
I love Mac's, and will always own one. However, the Intel Mac's are buggy as hell. (Still Not Compareable to Windows) The iPod's are not as good as the PSP, except for the large hard drive (and the ease of iTunes).

PSP better than iPod??in what sense??

Kind of a huge gap, don'cha think? For an extra $100 I can nearly TRIPLE the capacity? Why would I even consider a 30 GB model?

Actually $100 is a lot of money. Especially if you don't need the capacity.

The main thing for me though is size. The difference in width is only a few tenths of an inch but the 30G is definitely slim and it feels pretty light in the hand. I'm not sure that's really the case with the 60G/80G. The iPod is primarily a portable device afterall.

640x480 H.264 Baseline Encoded Video Won't Load Nor Play On Original 5G Video iPods

Nope. I already tested it and it's a no-go. Do you know for sure you just bought a 640x480 H.264 music video?

I'm happy

I'm definitely going to buy one of these. Despite what it says in my profile (which I need to update really don't I?), I've been sans iPod for sometime now and was waiting for these updates. It was pretty much what I expected and I'm pretty pleased. I'm disappointed that the lower end model didn't get a little increase in capacity but it got a price drop instead so, it's not that bleak. I think the updates are quite nice though probably not worth it if you already have a 5G...
I'm just hesitating between the 2 devices now. Then there'll be the black or white dilemna...life is good :)

Checked Checked and triple Checked 35.9meg video compared to the original 16.8meg for the video before. They just take a while to load into the iPods memory. H264 and great quality.

Multimedia... you sure you updated your iPod?

Educated guess would be "big" iPod sales will slump whilst the Nanos & Shuffles will skyrocket.

The Nanos and Shuffles already outsell the big ones. And I suspect that's how it would be regardless of what Apple does with the big model.

Many people just want something that is smaller and cheaper, and don't care that much about big capacity. Period.

just encoded 5 secs of video using the quicktime default export for ipod... now the default is 640 x 480 that plays too.

hmmm works fine for me :) Took a while longer to load on the iPod (had ablack screen for about 5 secs) but plays fine.
OK Please play on computer and get info - Command i - while playing to know for certain it is 640x480 H.264. On the bottom it says Normal Size: What numbers are there? In Format: it will say H.264 if it was encoded that way. Also what is the FPS Number playing? Should be 30.

Thank you.

I'm very happy about the gapless playback, and battery life, but generally all these updates are pretty disappointing.

Pretty much sums up my mood hours afterwards. At the time, I was flaming pissed/disappointed. I'm pretty much utterly disappointed by this event.

But this iPod was almost "expected," from a business standpoint. Full screen iPod and iPhone; anything short of a 60/120GB iPod lineup and I'll see it as a huge letdown.

Steve's pre-Holiday event's bar is set at infinity +1.

I blame the no-show turtleneck sweater. :D

I have never been more happy to be proven wrong. But now: Steve has been lying to us about the capabilities of this great iPod 5G for nearly a year now, just so we wouldn't anticipate the iTunes Movie Store.

What a dear.

Hope you get your iPod to work,

Interesting note, new videos load quicker on the most recently purchased iPod.

For now i'm off to bed.

Now lets see a 30gig ipod that does video decently, with some sorta of gapless playback or a 8gig nano for the same price? Hmm hard choice. Yeah right gapless(even it is software based?) and large space wins all the time. Now if they add more of a eq option and built in fm(with recording) I would for sure get one.

Now can someone confirm if gapless is true gapless or software based? I know with rockbox on the ipod you get true hardware based gapless but with this it is not clear.

Another question how is battery of video improved but not audio? And I am under the impression a brighter screen means worse battery life so in turn it could mean under real life situations video playback is more like 2.5-3 hours?

What does this mean for the long-rumored widescreen ipod? Are they saving the new samsung 120gig drives for that? Will they wait until the hype dies down then hit it hard with the new 6g ipod like last year? Personally I like the updates, better battery, brighter screen, gapless playback(!), more storage. I just don't want to buy this and then have an uber ipod out in a month's time...

I Can't Get It To Work For Me. Help!

Please explain exactly how from where you did that. I am still trying with handbrake and EyeTV. The EyeTV2 export is supposed to be connected to the QuickTime but the iPod default is not H.264 640x480 in the EyetV2 Export windows.

Keep Your Powder Dry. It's coming. When we don't know. But no doubt on the way.

How Are You Home Encoding?

How are you home encoding? From What source type of video?

Both Mainline and Baseline 2-pass encodes from Handbrake at 640x480 won't load onto my iPod.

OK as far as I can tell exports from EyeTV2 and Handbrake will not work. But exports off an existing mp4 file from QuickTime Pro will. Looks like Elgato and Handbrake have some work to do. Sorry for the confusion.

just before i jump between covers.... a rip from handbrake in 100% quality i had from before, DV Pal footage, 720p and 1080i footage all opened in quicktime and just gone to export for iPod all worked fine.

i Have not tried any other software, but tomorrow i will have to as its kinda my job to be up on these things. will let you know how it goes

I wish the games worked on a 4G iPod. I guess I'll have to wait for the warranty to expire and then for it to die before I spring for a 5G. Hopefully by then there will be a 6G widescreen iPod!

I'm more curious about the iPod nano 4GB = $149 and then the regular iPod 30GB = $249 pricing than the pricing between the 30GB and 80GB.

Okay, so it appears that owners of 5th generation iPods (before the latest release) who update their iPod software to version 1.2 get a few cool features that come pre-loaded out of the box on the latest 5th generation iPods, but not all.

We get:

• Gapless playback

• Ability to adjust backlight brightness (I'm particularly excited about this, I've been wanting it for ages, I bet it increases battery battery life immensely with the brightness turned way down)

• When rapidly scrolling through ARTISTS we get overlayed alphabet letters which correspond to where we are on our list

• Ability to play games bought from iTunes

We don't get:

• New search function

** Video playback details yet to be determined

You also get the letters searching albums - at the moment I am finding this feature a little irritating. I love the gapless playback and the backlight control. I downloaded tetris for nostalgic reasons and it works fine.

OK OK. My Bad. H.264 640 x 480 Does Work • Just Not From All The Export Machines Yet

OK Great. Thank you. Got it. Never used 100% Quality before although I noticed it's only a 1 pass export. But I'm willing to give it a try. So far I noticed that the H.264 doesn't look any better but is 150% larger in file size so I'm not sure if this is going to work out. Need to test on HD material.

1. Open Toast Image
2. Export 100% Quality FFmpeg one pass encode
3. Open in QuickTime Pro
4. Export Movie to iPod
5. Drag result to iTunes
6. Get Info On File
7. Add Info and Art
8. Drag to folder on iPod
9. It works!

Sorry folks. Hope this helps in the end.

Bad news is the file is 22MB and looks about the same as the 15MB non-H.264 Handbrake 2-Pass encode. So about 150% larger file size with no control over dimensions after Handbrake.

Need to SEE the HDTV Encode difference. But those encodes are going to take a LONG time. Gotta rip the toast image, then export 100% quality FFmpeg file which will be HUGE. Then rip the iPod preset - totally no control - from QT Pro. I think the result will be a much larger file size which is what I strive to avoid.

Just notified the author of Handbrake his H.264 encoder is broke.
