Wasting breath on a comment like this isn't even worth it.
OH whatever Apple is great. Apple is god. Apple can do no wrong. It was that way for a while, and they will always be better then Windows, god knows I hate windows. Now, they are slipping.

metal back same as U2 edition

I was really curious if the 5.5 G iPod has the same back finish as the U2 special edition. That would make things a lot better imo

I love apple - will still buy apple but i got caught up in all the iphone banter. Im jsut sick of carrying half a dozen bricks in my pocket. I like that patent about the multifucntion device, thats when i will finally relent and buy an ipod. I do have a shuffle though.

I have a PDA with touchscreen, phone, bluetooth, wireless, IR, bigger than Ipod screen, full pocket PC capabilities, camera, motion camera, games. and the thing is SMALLER than an iPod. other people can do it, its time apple stepped up, the next step for iPods is phone capabilities, cause so many phones now can play music.

also id be pretty disapointed if i was looking at the new ipod nano range. the minis were ugly and it seems that cause of the problems with the nano screens that have gone back a year and said "well lets go with somethign easy"

on a good note, that new shuffle is awesome, really suits its purpose.

so someone please elaborate??

what's with all the video issues that the old 5gen canNOT be compatible with?? and what's with the pixel number?
dammit i'm totally ignorant when it comes to tech issues.....

so can any of you please bother to elaborate about the suitable file types for both the old on and the new one?

Apple is in a slow fall...
I love Mac's, and will always own one. However, the Intel Mac's are buggy as hell. (Still Not Compareable to Windows) The iPod's are not as good as the PSP, except for the large hard drive (and the ease of iTunes).

PSP better than iPod??in what sense??

For video playback the PSP is better hands down, no contest. For music, the iPod wins hands down no contest.

Just depends on what you're in it for.

pricing, etc.

i'm sorry but the 30G iPod has a stupid price. If someone is that tight and has to get an iPod, they would probably buy used.

there are plenty of reasons people might avoid buying a used ipod, or simply want a new one.

speaking for those of us who are, as you put it, "tight," i for one would appreciate it if you... didn't.

$350 is 40% more than $250. to some of us, that's a lot. i think apple understands that, and probably has some pretty damn good data behind their pricing scheme.

i have to say, reading all these whiny complaints, everyone sounds like Comic Book Store Guy from the simpsons. i don't get where exactly the sense of entitlement comes from? i mean, obviously they're doing the best they can... what, are they holding back some awesome features, just to piss you off?

Apple's whole new "black is top of the line" trend is thoroughly idiotic. I literally removed my credit card from my wallet when I read on the event stream that Apple had released an 8gb nano, then replaced it when I read on about the 8gb model being black only. I hate black electronics. I want an aluminum 8gb iPod to match my PowerBook. Is that so much to ask?? Fine, if they want to only allow black for 8gb, but why limit us. Stupid stupid stupid.

anyone notice....

http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/bts/BTS2006Rebate.pdf

This link is for the Mac/iPod offer that was going on for the back to school season. On the last page under terms and conditions, it lists the iPods that qualify for the rebate and how much each are worth. Then in a second column there is a different price which goes into effect on 9/12/06. Has the rebate always been printed like this....If anyone has this form printed out prior today, check and see if it is like this one.

I do wish I could ultra-boost the audio on-board. Some of the video digitizations I have are too quiet.

i felt the same way as i watched a podcast today. then my brother pointed out "itunes lets you set volume level for each item in itunes: select a song/podcast/whatever. right-click on the selected item and choose "options." set the volume adjustment at a higher level. that will keep the volume for that item higher." He says it was one of many useful tips he found in the Visual Guide to iTunes 6.

So umm yeah....w00...go Apple...new Video Ipod...living in the Uk...why should I buy???????????????

Apple doesnt have ANY TV shows or Movies in the UK to buy. Why should I bother buying a video ipod now. Yeah I know I could store my FULL music collection but I want an ipod for wearability (at least for Music) when walking to school.

The deal clincher to make me buy a video ipod would be TV shows / Movies but it's been a year of TV shows for the US but ZIP / ZILCH / NADA for the UK. C'mon Apple get talking to the BBC / ITV. I'm sure you could work something out !!!!!.

And well movies is a "we hope to go international" so well meh to that.

So considering I'm not one of those people who a) wants to wear an ipod not carry b) doesnt need my complete music collection c) lives in a country where Apple has jack in terms of content what makes the Video ipod a compelling purchase

where did the student pricing go? i guess there was an overall drop, but I was hoping to use my discount one more time before graduating

I was puzzled by this as well. As a student I was kinda disappointed. I guess Apple figured that Ipods were more for entertainment and less about helping to achieve academic persuits.

The new 'pod pricing seems to be at the old Education Store levels anyway. So basically they got rid of it for students and gave it to everyone.

That's right, the 5G 60Gb was $369 normally, and with the Educational discount it was $349, and the 30Gb was the same way $269 vs. $249. I least I think that's right?

Engraving

Did the engravings get shorter? Now its 27 chars per line. I thought it used to be 30 something. I can't get the same engraving that I had on my last ipod (stolen).

This Handbrake tutorial is pretty complete. But you need to substitute the H.264 max dimension of 320x240 up to 640x480 the new MAX. Trouble is, as far as I can tell, the Handbrake H.264 encode to those new dimensions yields files that won't load onto Video iPods. So far only a QT Pro no options fixed iPod export works. But those files are about 150% larger than similar non-H.264 files. I have written the author of Handbrake about this problem. Hopefully it will get fixed in the next month or so - I hope.

Price Drop?

Does anyone else think something more might be coming? With the price drop of both models and the lack of drastic changes ie the rumored full screen, bluetooth, and virtual click wheel?
Could there be a "one more thing..." next week?

How do you use the search function guys?
Also, how do you ge the littel letter to appear, when scrolling through your playlists etc..

Cheers

This is probably old news by now, but the new ipods/nanos don't qualify for the $179 return apple is giving students when the buy an ipod with a computer... bummer.

So far I noticed that the H.264 doesn't look any better but is 150% larger in file size.

The files are much larger both the bought stuff and the home encodes. (but thats what you expect with four times the pixels) but they look fantastic when your ipod is connected to a tv compared to the old encodes.

My Handbrake Bit Rates w/o H.264 Look Great

Yes except I have been getting excellent looking TV playback from iPod w/oH.264 by encoding 544x400 SD and 624x352 HD and I am able to keep the bit rate down to no more than 1000kbps HD and 700 SD still looking great.

The Apple H.264 Fixed Export bitrate is aparently 1500 kbps which I think is excessive and unnecessary.

To sum up after testing the new H.264 640x480 fixed preset encoder Apple offers in QT Pro:

1. Result is a 640x480 1639kbps 222MB mp4 movie after three stage process that takes much longer than:
2. NON H.264 Two-pass Handbrake FFmpeg encoding 544x400 - Max res allowed pre-iPod 1.2 - 739kbps 100MB mp4 movie looks almost the same.
3. I'm gonna have to remain a NON-H.264 advocate under these circumstances.

I just can't see the additional file size being worth it. In fact, my guess is, if I could control the size of the H.264 export, the 100MB version would be inferior to the Handbrake NON version @ 100MB 2-pass. They are just that close when looking at both of the above.

Note: We don't yet know what the new NON H.264 maximum resolution is that is still iPod compatible under the new 1.2 OS. We can't assume it's also 640 x 480 without H.264 encoding. That is not clear at all yet.

Reasons to buy?

So the reasons to buy if you live in GB include:
Housekeeping updates to the year old 5G iPod
No access to TV shows - but if you could they would be 60% brighter!!!
No access to movies - again potentially 60% brighter though
But best of all you can pay £260 for the 80GB version (only £70 more than those in America) or you can buy the 30GB version for £200 - a massive price drop of £10 and indeed the price that the Americans will pay for the 80GB iPod.
Yet another great endorsement for Apple international PR - and to be honest I agree with the whole “don’t blame the company thing” but with a little knowledge of import tax and the fact that other services allow downloads of their programing in the UK - it is genuinely Apple that are lacking here to support their non US fan-base!

Apple will eventually introduce a true video iPod.

My guess will be after bigger 1.8 inch HDs are released.

I don't expect this until after New Years.
