I've resized, rotated and put the contrast up on the barcode area. Still hard to make out.

What puzzles me is that near the beginning it looks like M8719 but towards the end it fits MB719 better! Argh!

from what i can remember from my time as an apple service tech...:

LL/A means english (north american?) revision A
Z/A means international revision A (products that don't require separate languages/regionalization)

Well, the Z/A would make sense. I can only assume it's international because of the Chinese writing, and its obviously a rev A

I predict MASSIVE negative votes on Tuesday if this is released, because it's "just an iPod" and not a PDA/videophone/teleporter :D

And then, like every Apple product that we place unreasonable expectations on, it will sell great anyway :)

Thanks for the comparison. Maybe the discrepancy has to do with whether the slash character is really in the barcode or not (or is represented some other way in the barcode)?

(Not that the barcode means a whole lot--it's just one more thing to see if they "got it wrong". And it looks to me like the bars probably DO match the characters.)

Mm, with that low a resolution, all bets are off. I'm also assuming that the barcode is a literal encoding of the text, which may or not be the case.

Everyones going on about 'this doesnt look right' 'they've never had anything like that' blah blah blah, ITS A NEW PRODUCT... 'fun NEW products' and ive worked in Graphic design for years and used photoshop for about 6 years, i could never mock up something like that as been said before the refractions of light are correct, the 'mark' on the left hand side is infact light on the edge of the plastic, it looks weird due to jpeg compression, im sure its real, in the end if its a new product it could look like anything and use any connections, look at the new power connector for the Macbooks!...

Some person with a 5G iPod and a little time has just stirred up a lot of controversy. The cord is fake, the LCD is fake, and the iPod is a edited 5G iPod. The barcode is used too. my 0.2$

How many times does it need to be said? It's B, B as in Book, which people who can't see that this is a B, obviously can't read.

On the 'Test' Picture that is shown, even the current Video ipods still have that built in for 'us' the techies to fix and diagnose iPods. So that color matrix, its there just not as big in the software.
I just hope that if this become real that its a lot bigger and tablet in size.

it says "this side" which has been covered 20 times in the thread already ;)

haha...sorry, i read the first 6 pages of the thread and then got a little bored....sorry....i guess that idea was crushed....oh well...;)

have we translated the asian (excuse my ignorance) characters yet?

Holy hell! I can understand not reading most of this thread... it's huge I know... but IT'S BEEN ASKED AND ANSWERED ON THIS PAGE ALREADY. Plus like 20 times earlier.

a photoshopped 5G...that's exactly what it looked like to me when i saw it. however, the 5G spy photos looked like a photoshopped 4G also!

tuesday seems so far away :D

The photo is a fake, but does anyone think the next iPod could look much different?

My gut says... real! There are reasons to be suspicious, but there are also reasons to think it's real. And there is no PROOF either way, not that I've seen in reading this thread.

Well, here's some stuff to think over, especially having some characters in your signature. You seem like the agnostic who can prove it is impossible to prove there is/isn't a god. To the contrary, I can prove there isn't. Er, a 6G iPod before me anyway.

Why: The best evidence is pointing out that label on it. The cardboard one. Who cuts/folds a piece of brown paper or cardboard like that? Who writes Chinese (I know no word like that in Japanese), trying hard to retrace the lines, modeling it clearly after a typed font - notice in the first character there is this part where two lines almost come together but don't, instead becoming somewhat parallel; those lines should either meet and/or the one on the bottom should curve the opposite direction. There is also an element common to both which is written exactly how it appears in certain fonts, but is not how it is written (the part on the left side of each character). The dots are awkwardly placed. The flick on the tukuri for power is not a flick but a perpendicular line. My point is, this fake Chinese label is not the work of a illiterate Chinese, but the work of a person copying the font off a computer.

It doesn't end there. Where is this fake label put? Why, on the power cord, of course. Wait a minute...on the power cord? Why tailored (folded) to the power cord, like it applies to the power cord and not to the alleged ipod? I can think of one reason - to cover up the label on the power cord. The only legitimate reason would be because the powercord needs returning or something, as if apple needs to redesign a power cord. Lol.

But that doesn't mean the hoaxer is too lazy to photoshop this thing. Notice that the screen reflects on the border where there are white rectangles. At first glance, that looks ok, but you get to thinking...in the upper right corner, how come I see very little visible difference between a reflected rectangle and an unreflected rectangle? Shouldn't something nearly as bright reflect nearly as much? Why doesn't the yellow one reflect at all? Or the cyan? Better yet, how come there are highlights on the right but only a light smudge and a tint at the corner to the left? (Overall, the light appears to come from top left, yet right side is most reflective?) Looks funky if you ask me.

Well, light could behave strangely in photos, so there's no use arguing there. But can anyone explain why the label is the way it is (fake and conveniently placed, folded)? That's a toughie.

Sure, the "8" looks like a "B". So what? The tag is yellowed from age and the translucency is unnatural. And making a tag is fairly easy. Let's think...why would there be a barcode on a prototype or finished product, directly on the screen, as if intentionally asserting authenticity? Why neatly in a corner, yet covering part of the screen? Barcodes are used to scan. Give me one reason someone would scan this, as is, without a box or anything. Well, it ain't to scan the retail price. Someone more experienced with barcodes might tell you what that might be. All I know is that it's not even symmetrical, and usually at least the ends are...though not always.

And seriously...would the 6G iPod look all that different? It'll definitely be white, be of similar proportions, etc. The power cable (which also looks like a misfit) hopefully doesn't come with fake chinese labels. But, this isn't a tablet either. Umm, that's pretty obvious from the apparent size of some of the other stuff on the screen, I'd think. But then, the tablet COULD end up looking sorta like this fakie, IF there is going to be a tablet and IF it makes you happy to think that. Anyway, the pic is rather fake, even if you ONLY consider the fake Chinese. If you can just simply ignore that, then I venture to say you are biased. Why else would a neutral person think that could be legitimate Chinese?

Yes I agree with you and have thought it was B since the moment I saw the image.

It COULD be fun, with the right software.

Wasn't Apple hiring for mobile games programmers before. We never really saw any games on the iPod. Maybe these come along on the new video iPod?

...but after having posted that i'm starting to doubt myself...

the letter before the slash often refers to language...C/A is canadian french, F/A is european french...

but if i go to buy an ipod on the canadian apple store right now the product code ends in LL/A and someone else posted a while back that they couldn't find any hardware products that use Z/A, only software. i even dug out the box for my world traveler adapter kit and it ends in G/A so i'm not sure that i do know exactly what Z represents.

I think it's a FAKE. I'm a native Chines. And from the way those two chinese characters were jotted on the connector cable, it doesn't look like they were written by native Chinese, more like Japanese. However, as far as I know all iPods are made in China.

The leak photos of iPod G5 looked very authentic, just by looking at the way those Chinese characters were written.

Just my 2 cents, and I really hope I'd proved wrong.:p

It doesn't mean "this side" it means "here". If you put "this side" into a web translator you would get these characters for the two words This and Side, but together they mean "here" which means they were written by a non-chinese speaker or they are fake. I think this pic is real, but that doesn't mean it is a product that will actually be released.

think about the chances of Apple releasing a product where neither their name nor logo are visible on the front.

Um, does anyone own an iPod that has the Apple name or logo on the front?

Plus just because you know the screen to be the same as used in an analogue video format does not mean that it wouldn't be reproduced in a digital form as part of a basic test. I've seen similar tests to this performed to test video cards and monitors before.

If the photo is fake it could be an iPod 5g distorted slightly (rounded corners not so round?) this would explain why it's not the exact size of the current ipod.

The fake color test could have cut and pasted on top of the photo except for the white sections which were left behind from the original backlit ipod 5g and copied and pasted over to the other side (explaining why both bottom left and top right corners have that nice real light effect.)

as for the connecter I dunno it could be anything, and the sticker looks very real. I hope it is real anyway I'm just pointing out what I think could being going on here.

stop thinking its a tablet.

if it were a display apple would most likely put the power cable towards a corner area, as the battery would be located towards the end not the center....
Well, actually...a battery might be the heaviest part, therefore located in the center for a more unified Center of Gravity, but it doesn't matter, because the power in port can be anywhere. Ever cracked open an iPod before? The battery attaches to the TOP, but the plug is in the BOTTOM.

However, I also think this needs to be done.

Let me quote myself from page 4.

Does anyone have the Apple combined Firewire/USB cable? The connector looks a little like it, perhaps a revised version?
It's a Cable to Go firewire/USB cable.

from http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat_id=218&sku=35502

The cable in said picture is not an AV cable, just a firewire/usb cable.
