I'm going to have to say that this is a fake. Check out the top right corner of the device. If you zoom in there is clearly a marquee modification there as the pixels not only don't line up along the borders, but shows a difference in hues between inside and outside the rectangle. The inside of the rectangle is darker than the top portion of the device. Secondly, the bottom left corner of the device has another marquee discoloration that actually expands out of the device into a sharp corner. A pixel for pixel look leaves me very skeptical that this is a real life deal, however I so want it to be.

I say fake as well, and here's why:

-That looks like an "8", not a "B"...I still need to do some cleanup and enhancement on the image, but the top of the character has exactly the same outward curve on both sides.

However, if I'm wrong, I want one.

It's a B !!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

Look:

First, I'm not at all sure this is fake. It has something about it.

That said, the left hand edge looks a bit iffy to me. If I was going to fake a full screen iPod this is what I'd do (I apologise to anyone who's already said this, but I didn't read all 10 pages):

1. Take an iPod Video
2. Take a printout, preferably with good ink on thin paper, of the pattern seen in the photo on the screen.
3. Carefully cut it to just the right size and the paste it onto the front of the iPod.

I dunno, I just get the feeling that there's a slight raise, though only very slight, from the right to the left, and I get the feeling that light is only being emmitted from the right side of the screen.

Of course, the connector would then by on the wrong side, but that would be easily taked to. Just hold it in place for the photo.

As I said, though, I'm not at all convinced they're fake. Just throwing ideas around.

Better than the barcodes - does anyone read chinese?

Wait - I have like 20 people at my office that speak chinese. I'll be right back!

The cardboard thing says:

"This Side" or "This Side Up" in simplified chinese!

Adds credibility?

Barcodes

For comparison. Any more compression would have killed the barcodes, photochop is at home; only paint here at the office.

Thanks for looking into it, but that was identified some pages earlier.

Oooopps, when the thread gets too long I read like the first two pages and the last 3 or so and I figure the middle is just people flaming and fighting over who knows how to spell or whatever.

I'd say the odds are 1:3 that this is real. The timing doesnt seem right... Apple would debut this before xmas to build buzz, just like they did with the nano and 5G. Also, something looks vaguely fishy in that pic I can't put my finger on... the cable, maybe, or the reflection on both sides of the screen, or the color bars.

Bs

Don't care whether it is a photoshop job or not. My two cents on why it isn't real...

1. Were Apple to have developed this, the power supply/connection cable would be far, far more elegant. That looks like a run of the mill power cord from a old school table lamp, not a piece of apple wizardry.

2. Steve is an egoist. No way would an apple device not have the Apple logo in plain sight.

-Shine through the sticker is easy to fake. Photoshop-->
insert test pattern-->insert sticker-->change layer transparency, or even selection transparency.

I'm sorry but you're wrong. It's not that easy. I've tried. I've also won awards for video compositing. It's really tough to make a composite (still or moving) that blends so easily. Notice the way it isn't an even transparency? It's only transparent above the colors with a higher luma value.

If this was a high-res, super-clean image I would have thought the same thing. It is not, it's a crappy photo (can I say crappy on MR?). If you can create something like this in photoshop, please post mockups of a video iPod (or even Mac Tablet) that look this real.

I know, I know. You're going to say that you can't do it but you know it can be done. I would bet good money that this object is real, video iPod or not. The only part of the image that I believe is Photoshopped is the black scribble in the bottom right hand side of the screen.

1. It could be a prototype cable used in production.

2. There has not been a single iPod that had the Apple logo on the front. My PowerMac doesn't have the Apple logo on the front either.

StealthRider, Image enhancement and cleanup???

Just hit the "zoom" button once, and you can plainly see it's a B.

You can see it in the regular photo just fine. But there are apparently many visually impaired individuals in this thread, so hitting the zoom button should solve that. If that doesn't work, just strap a couple ashtrays to your head, as it'll be cheaper than the glasses you'll have to buy.

1. It doesn't look like an Apple cable, but using a 3rd-part cable at some kind of test station isn't out of the question.

2. No iPod has ever had the Apple logo in plain sight :D

Here they are.
Thanks! Looks like a good match for the sticker, to me. Especially the B version.

I think (hope) its legit.
And to those complaining about the dock cable, its probably for testing.
Just take a look back on when steve announced the 5G ipod and when he was showing it up on screen the cable was huge. Its most likely a cable for diagnostic, etc.
And those who complain about tactile feedback, maybe apple will adapt the technology created by alpine with their car navigation systems where the screen can be "felt".

correct!

I think most of the time you are dead on with that assumption!

translation?

omg....this would be amazing...especially if it were a smart phone with all the mobile me rumors on it....although i might not buy it because i know a newer, better version would come out 2 days after it was released...haha....anyway, does anyone know what language is on the mysterious cable? japanese, chinese? could someone try to translate that so we can see if it gives us more insight? thanks (*awesome thinking, i know*;))

Did someone else say that Z/A typically indicates a software product? What might one deduce from that?

from what i can remember from my time as an apple service tech...:

LL/A means english (north american?) revision A
Z/A means international revision A (products that don't require separate languages/regionalization)
