And if I'm not mistaken I think the apple stores in France have a 6 year protection on that sort of thing. Unlike America:(

You have two years of warranty just like every country from the European Union (so you can have your mac or iPhone repaired for free during 2 years and not one, without an Apple care) and they have to give you a refund if you find a latent fault with your product (in my case the IR).

Don't know what are the 6 years you are talking about thought ?

I lost the thread on it. Another person on here from London posted the apple store policy and it said they have 6 years for things like IR since it is impossible to know it was faulty till it happens.

Yeah you might be right. Very hard to see any IR in this pic:

:p

I can see it clearly. This is a defective monitor!

----------

Expect to see a lot more of this in the coming days.

I don't want to minimize the annoyance of image retention--it has certainly been a legitimate issue for a lot of people--but most of those posts are from a guy who has bought and returned about a dozen machines over the past year. He is on an impossible quest for a standard of perfection which Apple apparently cannot match.

To be taken with a huge grain of salt if you ask me.

IR isn't the only problem!

Other problems are: light bleeding, spots on the screen, yellowish etc...

I thought these are iMac problems with (mainly) 27'' LG monitors installed because of bad quality control in China...

It sounds strange these little monitors (compare to 27'' iMac monitors) appear the same problems!!! :(

----------

Here's a rule of thumb: Need something? Buy it. Doesn't work like it should? Exchange it. Still doesn't work? Buy something else. Finito.

How many times do you accept for yourself to replace it?

Do you like this "game"?

Personally, I hate it! When I buy something expensive, I expect to find almost the best quality in the market. To replace one time is a matter of bad luck....but this issue is going to be a syndrome and APPLE MUST do something immediately!

Else? Finito!

----------

The problem with image retention is that it can get worse over several months to the point where it occurs very easily without having to perform any test. That's why people with very mild image retention are worried because it could be mild and not noticeable when you buy the machine but get severe months later when you no longer have the option of returning it. That's the story you get if you read the Apple support forum thread titled MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

It's important to buy APPLE CARE PROTECTION (3-year extended warranty).

This problem is awful!

(non-retina monitors suffer from the same problem? do you know?)

APPLE CARE PROTECTION gives the cover you need.

Usually, APPLE retailers don't accept IR or light bleeding or yellowish as problems! They say it is normal for their eyes (Classical answer: "Hey my friend, I can't see anything! Are you sure?...ok! Let me check it but 99% I won't find anything...").

You are happy and safe with your extended warranty but the result is a big zero!

Correct me if I am wrong...

The Apple discussion thread in the OP is for the Mid-2012 Macbook Pros. There were multiple people (including yours truly) who opened 10+ Macbook Pros and demonstrated image retention right there in the store. Then, we used a terminal command that tells us the serial number of the display*. It's no coincidence that as soon as we hit an Samsung display, we couldn't demonstrate IR at all.

Anyways, if you take it in, Apple will most likely replace the display, and the replacement parts have been all reported as Samsung parts now.

I'm not sure what the status on the new Late 2013 Macbook Pros are, but mine (high-en 15-inch) exhibits no image retention.

I've never used a display in my life that exhibited IR until the Mid 2012 Retina Macbook Pro and my iPad 4.

*The LG made Retina displays started with LGxxxxxx and the Samsung ones started with LSNxxxxx.

LG may make a cheaper offer for IPS monitors but I think APPLE should replace all defective LG monitors at no customer cost.

It is ridiculous in the year 2013 to pay a lot of money and receive a defective product with a known problem...and on the other hand, APPLE not to clearly admit it....

PS: IR gets worsened by the use and time....so, don't be happy! IR may appear to your monitor sooner or later, pray to be under warranty....

Take it in. all replacements are Samsung. if you are out of warranty call AppleCare and link that huge thread. Apple knows about the issue so keep calling until you get an acceptable response.

I have just purchased a 13" Haswell and it has image retention :( It isn't bad now but I know what will happen if left, it will get worse over time. It happened to my 2012 15" with an LG screen which now has a Samsung screen. Guess I am keeping my 15"

Well you are. I had the problem and they gave me a refund more than 3 months after I bought the computer. It all dépends on whom you are talking to. Some employees are honest while others are going to try to screw you just like everywhere. You just have to remind yourself that you are in your own right and keep being polite :) They will eventually do the right thing :)

Yeah all 13" appears to be LG so they will all have the lssue. Until Apple or LG fix this it is a no buy for me personnaly.

I just looked at the displays at best buy and did the test for a few minutes. No problems with IR there either.

They are brand new. It takes weeks, sometimes months to start. It all depends of your use of the machine. The more you'll use it (that is to say the more the screen will be on) the faster it will start to appear. It´s pretty rare to experience it out of the box or you have to do the checkboard test for at least 20 minutes to see it. What test and how long have you waited at bestbuy ? (Few minutes is probably not enough).

I wish I could have did it for longer, but it's was only 5-6 mins. It was the ir test with the checkerboard and the gray/bumpy background.

Yeah 15/20 minutes would have been better but a store is not the best place to try ^^ People will wonder what the heck you are doing lol.

This is great to hear. I couldn't wait, so I bought one, despite the fact that it is a gamble. (Don't even have it yet.) If it is a problem in three months, and Apple still hasn't "fixed" things, I could potentially bail out and go to a MBA.

I'd much rather that they fix it in the next 8-9 months so that I could get it fixed "completely" under warranty. If I have no problems at month 11.... will have to consider AppleCare. Glad I can wait until the last minute on that.

Please try the checkmate IR test for 20 minutes at least when you'll have it and let us know if you experience the problem :)

Regarding the refund bear in mind that I'm French and it is the law here (They have to refund your product if you prove the existence of a latent defect) so I don't know if the same will necessary apply in your country :)

Personnaly I doubt they will fix anything as they had plenty of time to do it since the release of the first rmbp back in June 2012 and they haven't done a thing. My theory (it's just a theory so give me a break) is that the next generation mbp will see some major changes (maybe a little redesign) and a new screen technology (IGZO ?) which will get rid of the IR as they say it is "normal" for IPS screens. I could be completly wrong but i guess time will tell !

I doubt I can get a full refund after that much time (US here...) but I can certainly try, if nothing else to get a swap to a MBA and some store credit.

First thing I will be doing is testing the image retention. If I see it that early, I will just take it back and try again. Don't want to give up after just one.

Have seen all sorts of feedback so far. Some people saying no indication whatsoever, others saying every machine they have touched have had it. I don't know what to think at this point.

In my opinion it´s an issue on all the 13" model but good luck and let us know !
