I'm 13 and have and Original iPhone 8GB and an iPod touch 2G 8GB. I got the touch 1G on my 12th birthday and then sold it a year later to get the new touch. I only had to pay $46.00 more to upgrade. As for my iphone, I used my paper route money and Christmas tips to but a used Original iPhone from my neighbor. it was $250.00 I had to use my cash and work to get them, but I really take good care of them. I don't use my iPhone much. It spends its time sitting in it's box, but I use my touch everyday. I have a hard case and silicone case for both of them. I don't use the iPhone as a phone, go figure. I just use it as an iPod touch with a camera. I would say, If one of your sons want it, have them pay $199 for something. When they earn it, they will most likely take good care of it. My iDevices have no scratches on them and have never been dropped.
When I was younger, I had a 1st gen shuffle that was given to me for Christmas, and it lasted me two years, before I dropped it on concrete and it got stepped on. The headphone plug was broken inside the jack.
But I think If someone earns something, they will take care of it better.

Nope. This is total bulls***. I'm not sure when this shift occured, perhaps with the entry of cheaper devices but I bought my own cell with my own credit when I was 18.

To give a mobile to ANY 10 year old is a broken concept. I shake my head as American children are babysat by televisions and texting their way to C- test scores.

The kid doesn't need a phone, especially an iPhone. I got my first phone when I entered high school which means I was 14. Even then at 14, I don't think I really needed a phone. I didn't really start needing my cell phone until I turned 16 and started driving. When you can't drive you pretty much are either at home, school, or a friends house so its easy enough to be reached without the use of a mobile phone.

I am now 17.5 years old, I got my iphone right before my 17th b-day. I have a job and payed for both the phone and pay for the plan. Now if you are going to give a phone to a 10 year old you can pretty much guarantee that the parent is going to pay for the plan...so ask his parents since they would be the ones getting the monthly cost dumped on him. But in my personal opinion, he has no need for a phone for a few years.

Well, personally, I got through high school just fine with no cell phone, as did many people here (let alone prior to high school).

No kid 'needs' a cell phone IMO. The most I would do is give them a family phone for safety purposes if they're going to be out somewhere. If they want a every day cell, they can wait till their old enough to work and pay for it themselves.

But as others have said, this is really something for a parent to decide.

nope not if its on a family plan
ten dollars for phone when you add a line
and 30 for data so not always

ok.. $40 for a 10 year old to have a phone. Really, does that make it any better?

To the OP, you don't know if his parents are willing to spend that money for him to have the iPhone in the first place. I didn't read the topic, but, there is no need for a 10 year old to have a cellphone, let alone a smartphone, so please don't spoil him and get him a proper gift for his age!
