64gb for me.

Much less of a claustrophobic feeling, plus you get half of the $100 back anyways if you sell the phone later on.

Well worth the upgrade imo.

Hey everyone,

New to the forums and looking forward to meeting and interacting with all the great people on here. I'm in the market for my first i phone (SE).

I don't know which SE model to go with 16 or 64. I'm learning towards 16 because it's cheaper and my needs are as follows;

-Run 10-12 apps
-Little to no games
- Couple of gigs of music (2-4)
- Like taking pictures

Will 16 gb be enough for my needs?
What phone do you have now and how much storage do you have and use.

I wouldn't really advise the 16GB model to anyone however I understand that some people can get by with 16GB.

I'd rather buy more storage and not use it than not buy enough regret it and then not be able to use my device in the way that I want to. I wouldn't want to be restricted.

I've always bought the highest capacity model of every iPhone I've owned going back to the 3G.

This is entirely up to you to answer. For me, 16 GB is enough. Mainly because I don't store music on my phone (I still have a classic iPod that's kicking), or movies (iPad for that). I use my phone for small tasks like news updates, applications like YouTube, phone calls, texts, Twitter, Instagram, etc. If my phone starts filling up with photos and videos, I port them over to my Macbook and clear up space.

But, You have to be diligent about managing your content and using cloud services.
This is precisely why I buy the largest capacity Apple offers at the time. It is not something I want to deal with, have to deal with or anything I want interrupting my using the phone.

I live with my phone for two years or more and I refuse to be confined by playing this dance. Note, I am not yelling, just being emphatic. ;)

I totally understand. My wife won't do that dance either, and since she has historically gotten my old phones as I upgrade, I have to manage her stuff for her lol!

Over time I've just gotten used to it. To me it's not a big deal, just off-loading pics/videos and purging unused apps every week or so. have texts to delete after a year. Also, I don't own a large music library so it works for me. :)

Periodically, I will clean out my Dropbox (picture uploads) but that's about it. There is nothing on my phone that I couldn't afford to lose because any real important stuff we transfer to other storage pretty much immediately.

I have about 9GB in music, but I stream it because my MBP syncs my iTunes library with Google Play Music - so it's all up in the cloud there for me, including my playlists.

So, I do use services quite a bit, but it's usually more of a way to get stuff on or off my phone.

I've had four iPhones.. (4) 16GB, (5) 32GB, (6) 16GB and now (6S) with 16GB. I moved up to the 32GB thinking I actually needed it when in reality I never used the additional space. A 16GB paired with a £0.79 iCloud subscription is the perfect balance for me. If you like to keep your things organised and travel light in terms of photos / videos - you'll be more than happy with the 16GB! ;)

I have an 8gb Nexus and still have plenty of storage because everything is in the cloud, does icloud not automatically keep stuff there?

This will also be my first iPhone though I've had four iPads. After a 16GB iPad 2 I felt I had no choice but to get the middle of the road models afterwards as 16GB is no where near enough for the Apps, Comics, and numerous PDFs I store on it. For those I waited for sales that offset the $100 difference. At least the new 9.7 Pro, which I will also be getting, comes with 32GB which I can live with though I'll still be waiting for a sale to get it.

With the phone though I plan on going 16GB as I plan on using a cloud service for photos.

My biggest gripe about Apple is their markup on devices with larger storage. In the end I'm probably just making life more difficult for myself but I can't bring myself to give them $100 for $15 worth of extra memory.

No, you won't. At most you'll get back about US$30 and if you trade it in you get nothing extra for a higher level of storage.

I've followed trends on Swappa.com and higher versions of storage do very little for resale value.

However, a 64 GB iPhone makes a nice iPod touch once you upgrade to a new version of the iPhone.

Well then, let's take your advice and look on swappa shall we?

Looks like, based on your own source (Swappa) you get even MORE than $50 back I said earlier on average when selling the 64gb memory device, making the memory upgrade over 16gb even an easier choice.

OK That's fair. But that is a 6S that's been out for only six months. If you plan on sell every six months that's fine. But a closer comparison would be the 5S. The spread between the 16 GB and 64 GB is only US$41 and that's with a 32 GB option in between.

Edit: To be fair, I decided to take a look t the iPhone 6. The spread on selling price is between 16 GB and 64 GB is $46 and is $35 between 64 GB and 128 GB. That's much higher than what I've been use to seeing in the past. So I have to agree with Hal in that memory upgrades are holding their value much more, especially the jump from 16 GB to 64 GB.

I think 16gb is not much space considering apple standards, because its has all the best features that a mobile should have and apple is a brand known for its prestige, so if we see in that way if 16gb is enough for user, then also its not ok compared to iphone standards.

I've been debating this question myself. I'm going to buy an iPhone SE as soon as they are available in store.

I currently have a 16GB iPhone 4s with 4.4GB free. I never play games on my phone and upload photos from my phone to my mac shortly after I take them. (I don't like viewing photos or watching movies or videos on my phone, the screen is too small, would rather view them on my iPad) My biggest uses of disk space are 3.6GB for music ( I only keep my 4 and 5 starred music on my phone, the rest I stream) and for 1GB for podcasts. No other app takes more than 60MB of space each. If I don't use an app regularly, I'll delete it.

I have an iPad Air 2 with 64GB of space that I use to play games, view photos, videos and movies. I have 26GB free on my iPad despite having every app I ever wanted on my iPad (including several 1GB+ sized games that I never play) and 7 movies that I ripped for viewing later plus my full photo collection and music collection.

As others have pointed out, when you sell or trade in your phone down the road, you get back from about half the $100 price difference between the 16GB and the 64GB models (swappa, eBay, CL) to no difference in trade in-price from Gazelle or Apple .

I think myself and possibly the op are the exception to the rule that 64GB is the minimum size that most people should buy.

Right now, I'm strongly leaning toward just getting the 16G model since it meets my need but maybe I might change my mind. I've got several more days to think about it.

Update: well I ended up with the 64GB model because almost everyone said get it and I it was available Thursday morning but I think I could have been happy with the 16GB model. I now have a bunch of crap on my phone that I don't really need because I have so much free space.

Do not get 16GB. I got by on 16GB on my iPad (only iOS device at the time) with like 6GB left. I was like "Oh, 16GB? Piece of cake.

Absolutely not the case. A year and a half later, I have only 730MB left. That's after enabling iCloud Photo Library with "optimize storage", even removing all videos from my iCloud Photo Library so I can actually have room at all. Sure I could delete some apps but I would rather not, anything that takes up a sizable amount of space is something that I use very frequently. I have 65 Applications, no music, 867 photos, 38 videos but about 52 I think are currently on my computer rather than iCloud and subsequently on my devices.

This is going to push me to upgrade much earlier than I had planned, possibly an $850 expense, or ~$35 every month for 24 months through installment plan. I plan on getting a 64GB iPhone "plus", so. If they actually start at 32GB for the 7 or 7S I'll be tempted to go for that... But we'll see. Anyway, $100 extra in the beginning would have easily prevented this issue altogether. Or just $4 a month if you go by installment plan.

Just get the 64GB, $499 is still a steal for an iPhone with up to date specs. Or pay an extra $3 a month. This should be a no brainer.

You can delete apps that you don't use frequently. They are still available for you to download again for free from the App Store.

Don't underestimate the size of text messages. I currently have over 3gb used just on text messages.. It used to be about 7gb..
I guess that's more along the lines of media in the messages rather than the actual text.

Just with the camera alone... 4K video, 12 MP stills, Live Photos, time lapse and slo-mo... 16 GB isn't nearly enough.

Sounds like 16gb would be enough for your use (assuming those apps are around 50mb-100mb).

Upon activation, the iPhone will have around 13gb free space (the other 3gb are probably taken up by iOS). And don't forget apps store cache files on the phone, so another 1-2gb will be taken up by your apps' files.
